Kon also dominates the Monachi, a people he has imprisoned inside the caverns of Mount Tipple Rod. After Troy Warfork's closest friend accidentally drowns in Blue Diamond Lake, Troy dives into a massive whirlpool to kill himself. But instead of dying, Troy discovers an escape route from the Valley and from Kon's control. Troy goes to the Monachi and asks them to join him, hoping that together they can convince the people of Tipple's Eve to leave the Valley for ever. ...And that's when the adventure of a lifetime begins. Bucking this trend is author Gaylen Sharp, author of Tipple’s Eve. Sharp has indeed created his setting with attention to our very real world, pointing out our strengths and our flaws using artful language and well-defined characters. The reader is not taken to a far-away land, but rather to a more familiar geography where very real problems exist for a host of intriguing personalities to solve. Sharp’s valley, Tipple, is doomed to starvation by its tyrannical leader Kon. This leader controls all the resources, but not the resourcefulness of some of the youngest of the of the Tipplese. Kon also exercises dominion over The Monachi, a people who live isolated from the Tipplese. Troy, the most engaging character created by Sharp, is driven to the point of suicide by sheer grief and an absence of resolution to the Tipplese dilemma. However, in a hapless attempt to end his powerful life force, Troy inadvertently discovers a path to freedom, food and solidarity. Troy must become a diplomat to court Monachi support, and forge an alliance between the Tipplese and those dominated by Kon. Despite his youth and naivete, Troy discovers the answers. But can he learn to ask the right questions? Gaylen Sharp has created a masterful coming-of-age tale within the fantasy genre. The intricacy of the relationships he creates between characters grips the reader. His reluctant hero is able to overcome his limitations and find the courage to lead, leaving the reader inspired. The inescapable parallels between his world and our own make us think deeply about oppression, deception and political wrangling that seems to characterize the world in which we live. But Sharp rewards the reader with solutions and lessons for all. Moreover, this is a fantasy novel thankfully bereft of trite dialogue and mystical absurdities. However, a new author has been able to capture my attention. Mr. Gaylen Sharp, author of "Tipple's Eve", is that author. Though he deals in the fantasy genre, one is able to take from "Tipple's Eve" a quite realistic view of today's world in a very easily readable manner. He draws quite realistic parallels between the fantasyworld and our One finds themselves reading fantasy but familiar with its surroundings of, weak and strong personalities as well as common problems to be solved within the text of his work. In our society it sometimes takes the action of one person to recognize a problem and to bring together the necessary people to take all imaginable action necessary to resolve it. So to in Gaylen's work, his hesitant hero overcomes his own limitations in courage and leadership, traits we heartily applaud in people, to forge ahead and lead his people to meet and defeat all obstacles encountered! This is fantasy novel mercifully absent of the usual, boring, trite dialog and super mystical absurdities found in this genre. Fantasy and reality, normally not areas one expects to blend. However, Mr. Sharp has created a masterful blending of the two. If more fantasy genre authors wrote as Gaylen has, I might actually become a fantasy addict, just as I became addicted to "Tipple's Eve." This reader can only hope this will not be Gaylen's last novel in this genre! I could tell you the plot, the characters, the problems and other details of the book, however, "Tipple’s Eve" is an absolute must read for you to find out. Two different, though similar, groups of people are forced to live under the dreaded watchful eye of Kon, who, in turn, must grapple with his own demons. Tipple’s Eve expounds on the classic motives of behavior including greed and the assumption that “the grass is always greener” until one of those trapped in generational servitude inadvertently discovers a way out. Well-developed characters become familiar to the reader allowing alliances to develop in the traditional good vs. evil battle that permeates the story. Sharp’s scene changes, though frequent, keep the reader wondering what will happen next. A pleasant ride down a somewhat predictable path is derailed by a poignant self-discovery in a critical scene that brings the story full circle. Tipple’s Eve is an enjoyable read for any audience. My novel doesn’t contain any imaginary creatures. The fact of the matter is that the only thing that puts my novel in fantasy is that it is written in a non-existent time. Back to the question. I think that I am a writer and have no intentions of narrowing the writing options available. However, if I had to say where my interests are, it would have to be in general fiction. I am a storyteller and I can’t dictate what will come to mind when I write; only what I chose to write down. My taste in reading varies as much as my interest in topics to write about.
