June, 2009- The State of New Jersey is holding a tax amnesty through June 15. All penalties are waived, along with half the interest. You only pay the other half of the interst and the tax This vcovers returns from 2002 through 2007. January, 2009- Another year, another tax season. Best to get an early start due to many changes in the tax laws that might give you additional tax deductions, if you qualify for them. January, 2007- Tax season is now upon us again. Last year my website www.cpajoe.net saw a surge of hits after I reprinted articles both at my website and at another online networking site and the search engines picked them up. So I am expecting the increased traffic to result in additional business. This year there is a refund opportunity for back years for excise taxes you paid on long distance telephone calls on both your business and personal phone bills. Let me know if you need assistance to obtain these refunds. July, 2006- After three years at Ryze it seems like a lifetime. Met thousands of people online, a few hundred in person when New York City had in person events. Easier to reconnect with old contacts or meet new ones? You be the judge. You need to do both. Still enjoying the ambiance, and the business opportunities. January, 2006- Tax season is arriving and the phone is ringing with calls for new business. Where is the new business coming from? From the web. My website www.cpajoe.net has resulted a bunch of calls for new business. The website of Quickbooks, the largest accounting program for small business hosts local CPA's who are Certified Professional Advisors, and local businesses seek my aid. People come across articles I've written and some link to this site. Others google my name having networked here and at other online sites and find things I've done. Referrals from existing clients and service providers are another source of new business. I am confident that this will be another good year for business. Business owners can come to a center and get free counseling from experienced advisors. There are over nine hundred centers across the US. I am a Certified Quickbooks Advisor. In addition to my accounting, tax, and consulting practice, I also teach business planning, taxes, recordkeeping and Quickbooks at two NJ community college programs geared to new entrepeneurs. A published columnist, I write two monthly columns on tax and accounting issues, one for the Caribbean American & Hispanic Business Journal and other for its sister publication Diversity Plus. Community involvement: I'm an active Member of both the Regional Business Partnership (Newark, NJ) and the Morris County (NJ) Chamber of Commerce. I'm also Treasurer of the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce. I remain active with the New York University Stern School of Business Alumni Regional Group in New Jersey. We hold networking events and business-related panels and lectures. My networking skills come in handy there. I've been the president of my local Livingston NJ library endowment fund for the past few years. The library has just completed a major expansion at this time, and my guidance has been useful in this large scale community project. I'm also treasurer of the Jewish Historical Society of Metrowest (New Jersey). We preserve archival records of the Jewish Community in parts of Northern New Jersey and also bring the history to the community in the form of traveling exhibitions. For the last fifteen years I have organized on Christmas Day a volunteer group of about fifty people to assist at nursing homes, hospitals and other care centers so that the regular volunteers can be home at that time with their families.
