My
professional evolution began in 1978. You can say it actually began
when I was 10 and declared I wanted to be like my cousin Vestaan RN. My
father was appalled, and wanted me to become a MD. Life, dreams dying,
and finances intervened, and I became an RN in 1978.
I
spent many years in areas such as Critical Care (all types) when I
started migrating to Geriatrics. I enjoyed it so muchI went back to
school again to become a Nurse Practitioner
(NP). After doing this for a few years, I found myself answering an ad
for a Director of Nursing for a Hospice. It turned out to be a hospice
for people dying of AIDS. Initially, I turned it down, but something
made me change my mind. It turned out to be the hardest, the best, the
most enlightening job I ever held. I worked with the most amazing
people from the staff, to the volunteers, and most of all to my
teachersour patients. It was a blessed time in my professional
evolution.
Four
years into this I knew it was time to move on. I had really wanted to
get back to being an NP, and visualized working in rural, coastal
Washington. I needed to move to the beach. When I applied for that
dream job I did not qualify! Back to school, correct professional
designations obtained. Years later, while wondering if I would ever get
to my beloved coast, my vision was realized. And now, for the past 4
years, I've been practicing primary care in a very rural area of the
Washington Coast! (Visualizing works!)
How does
that bring me to OlderWiserWomen ™ ?
And just what is OlderWiserWomen ™ ?
In
my practice, the majority of my patients are women, and most of them
are approaching midlife or are older. I frequently get questions about
aging. A little over a year ago, one of my patients requested that I
write a book on aging. I declined her offer, feeling that women are the
true experts of their aging and suggested she write the book. This went
back and forth for a few months, and then was dropped. Several months
ago, while going about my daily activities, I suddenly had a flash and
OlderWiserWomen ™ came into being.
OlderWiserWomen
™ is about women telling their stories and helping to
redefine aging to the positive experience it is. It's about the
learning, sharing and rejoicing that can happen when women come
together. OlderWiserWomen ™ was born with the mission and purpose to
help women celebrate the transition, the growth, and the wisdom that
occurs for us all as we age.
What
started off to be just a book of womens stories on aging has
become much more. OlderWiserWomen ™ has taken on a life of her own and
is growing in leaps and bounds. She recently gave birth to a website ,
the book is in progress, and there is much more to come!
We
invite you to particpate at OlderWiserWomen ™. There you will learn how you can share your story and find information and resources that pertain directly to you! And when you register for Celebrations, the official newsletter for OlderWiserWomen, you'll receive a gift ~ "Celebrating You: 50 Tips for Vibrant Living".
