NEWS Miles to go... MEERA JOHN BANGALORE: There are success stories and success stories. Some are riveting, yet others hold you spellbound and some are ordinary in comparison. But success stories are inspiring, without exception. A reader of this newspaper, Sunil Robert called the other day to say how inspired he was by the stories of some persons featured in this column __ stories of sweat and toil, of braving the worst odds with a smile to come out on top. We got talking and before long Sunil's own success story unfolded. Twelve years ago, when he finished school in Hyderabad, Sunil, like most other youngsters his age, was all fire and drive to achieve big things. He set himself lofty goals. But life which was on a somewhat even keel till then, took an unexpected somersalt, grounding his high-flying aspirations. It was frustrating to see his dreams dashed. But Sunil learnt early of life's unpredictability __ that some factors are simply beyond one's control. Experience taught him however, that with the right attitude one can circumvent most problems, by simply learning to come to terms with them and then moving on. Rather than brood over his adversities, Sunil dealt with problems and picked himself up from there. And it worked. After school, he decided to pursue in right earnest his desire to become a chartered accountant ... a job he saw as both lucrative and with a certain social standing. But destiny had other plans in store for him. Due to a crisis in the family he had to set aside his plans for higher studies, and plunge into a Sales job at the age of 17, to bring in the bread. Expectedly, he was not just disappointed, he was dejected over plans going awry. While his peers enrolled in colleges, there he was "selling water purifiers door-to-door!" He turned a rebel, taking it out on his family most of all. It was trying times, and as he looks back, he is grateful to a spiritual awakening in him at that juncture that finally set things straight emotionally. Sometimes it takes adversities in life to bring out the fighter in you. Sunil decided he would not dunk problems but face them headon. And he resolved he would overpower them. He did just that and there was no stopping him. In the most difficult circumstances, he took along his studies with his almost round-the- clock job. After graduation at the Open University in Hyderabad, he enrolled for an MBA at the Osmania University. Then followed a Bachelors and a Masters in Communications at the university. "I was a full-time student and a full-time working person bundled together," he recalls heroically. Ofcourse, the grind paid off as he widened horizons by getting into radio and television compering and finally struck up a paying job in Advertising. After a season of disappointments and difficulties, things started looking up for Sunil. Today he is Marcom (Marketing Communications) Manager with a multi-national company Acer India (Pvt) Limited, based in Bangalore and is a major decision maker for his company. Contented and well settled in life, he takes it as his social responsibility to inspire youngsters of life's realities through sessions in career guidance and inter-personal relations. The tool he uses is his own life- story. As for him, there's miles to go, he says. (This weekly column will reflect on people of substance __ men, women, children who have triumphed over various adversities in life to come out achievers). meerajohn@indiatimes.com( TIMES NEWS NETWORK & AGENCIES ) Quote I liked recently: Calvin: "It's hard to be religious when certain people are never incinerated by bolts of lightning". from the irepressible C&H ;-) My profile (as seen on our company Intranet)...gives a little bit about what I do to earn my bread.
