BACKGROUND - I was born in New Brunswick, and educated in Nova Scotia, Canada. My professional background has been in the field of business and finance. MINDSET - DIVERSIFICATION - Many people today are 'struggling' in pursuit of more success and happiness in their lives. Employees - the self-employed - executives - professionals - business owners - you name it. And it's not much wonder - with all of the NEGATIVE news and events happening in our world - which sadly, tend to shape our 'thinking'. Further, most people today are 'vulnerable' with only ONE main source of income - and unless they DIVERSIFY, they will have no 'financial cushion' to soften the impact of a serious financial challenge. First, the - 'OWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS' - REVOLUTION - This phenomenon is here, make no mistake about that - yet there is far too much misunderstanding and confusion about this subject - especially because it's considered "the great North American DREAM". Yes, it can be a dream - but it's one that can become a "nightmare" too - particularly when tied to the Internet [Spam / Viruses / Hype / ISP Filters / SCHEMES & SCAMS, etc] -- and even more so if caution and due dilligence go out the window. A SHOT OF 'REALITY' - Tragically, over ninety percent of the world's population retires below the poverty line. Over 90%! Today, financial illness has become like a creeping cancer. Most families today are 'maxed out' on their plastic - many are fighting just to make ends meet - let alone, trying to save $$ for their children's higher education, or for a decent retirement for themselves. I see this all the time in my practice. Many small businesses too, are in trouble - they have an alarming failure rate. People's personal finances are in crisis - even with dual incomes. Most are living beyond their means - ninety days from financial collapse. Sadly, it's not always their fault - as we have all witnessed the real devastation that occurs when people fall victim to unforseen hardships or a sudden crisis (a job loss / divorce / prolonged illness / stock market crash / personal bankruptcy, etc). This is a survival-of-the-fittest world we live in - and no one will be holding 'charity balls' for us. We go this way only once - but once is enough - if we do it 'right'. EDUCATION ON - 'BIZ + MONEY MANAGEMENT' ? - A FRUSTRATION! - In my profession, I see people "hungry" for advice and good information on how to turn things around - how to achieve more financial success - how to 'get control' of their finances - their businesses - their lives. They go to seminars - they hire financial / business coaches like me - they buy books / courses / 'how to' programs. They can't seem to find the right 'prescription' for financial wellness. And not much wonder, because I can say this categorically ==> our public education systems are "bankrupt" as far as "teaching" any real practical skills in personal finance and business management. A SUCCESS FORMULA - There are 'many' factors that go into the equation for becoming successful - and there are many different 'definitions' for SUCCESS [here, we're focusing on FINANCIAL success (personal / business / professional) - leading up to a preferred VEHICLE for achieving it]. As a Financial Advisor, Business Consultant and Coach, I believe in, and very strongly recommend to my clients / associates that, in these economic times, it is critical to design a "financial safety net" to cushion today's uncertainty. In part, I teach the principles of debt & tax reduction -- marketing & practice building and diversification (by creating PASSIVE revenue streams [[with integrity]] to achieve this). And, although there are certain dangers to be aware of -- owning a BUSINESS (of the right kind) is one of the best ways to accomplish all these financial objectives - but only if done 'right'. BUSINESS OWNERSHIP - Please keep in mind that 'nothing' - not personal real estate - not the stock market - not gold - rare art - coins - stamp collections - vintage autos - family heirlooms - nothing has brought financial independence to as many people as has business ownership - which includes [in part] a professional practice. A MAJOR 'KEY' - The late oil billionaire, J.Paul Getty put it this way -- "You will never have financial security, or build real wealth, working for someone else." He went on to explain that we 'must' do 5 things to achieve complete economic independence, as follows -- (1)- we must be in business for ourselves -- (2)- we must market 'consumable' products and services, that appeal to the masses -- (3)- we must offer excellent service and solid guarantees -- (4)- we must give affordable and competitive pricing -- and most importantly, (5)- we must build our 'own' success upon the success of 'others'. LEVERAGE - In point #5 above, J.Paul Getty refers to the power of "leverage" - something rarely found in an 'ordinary' business, or in investing. This latter element is what the famous Zig Ziglar refers to as well, in his quote, which in essence says - "If you help enough other people to get what 'they' want in life - you will be rewarded with whatever 'you' want in life." It's also what Getty meant when he said - "I'd rather have 1% of the efforts of 100 people -- than 100% of my 'own' efforts." Leverage enables us to expand - our time / effort / resources [to 'franchise' our Biz]. The experts above were describing a proven financial formula that enables 'average people' to start and run their own biz ventures -- something that has been referred to as the people's Franchise. --------------------------------------------------- 
'CUT OUT' For A BUSINESS? - Most people believe that "owning a business" (ideally, from home) is utopia. And it can be. But many people get involved in home businesses too fast - without even knowing if they're 'compatible' with having one. This should be the very first step in the process, because too often, it turns out that their decision was a mistake - or they chose the wrong one. There are many factors to consider, and questions to ask. Often people get swayed because of too much 'hype' - and start a business with unrealistic expectations - only to regret it later. It's a high value tool - it only takes a few minutes - it's FREE - and it gives an instant response as to one's 'suitability' for a business. 'CHOOSING' a BUSINESS - It all starts with doing your homework - and this is where most people fall down - because researching / analysing / selecting the right business (businesses) is a complex job. Most are not able to evaluate a business opportunity properly. But even if they could, my advice is, if someone is just starting out, they should select and focus on only ONE solid, quality business - one whose products and services are 'exclusive' - that they can feel enthusiastic and proud of - that fit with a major trend - have good timing + long term potential. Then, once that business is into a healthy 'profit' position - a second biz can be started, if desired. TRUTH - It is also important to understand that any business(s) will require some kind of an operating budget to cover overhead costs (advertising / promotion / marketing materials and systems / supplies), as with any other business. It also takes a lot of hard work and patience, the same as with anything else worthwhile in life. But if a business is run according to correct business and financial principles, the rewards that are possible (financial, and otherwise) can be very very significant. 
GREATEST 'FINANCIAL STRATEGY' IN NORTH AMERICA - This is what Sandy Botkin calls a HOME business - because of the huge savings in TAXES alone. ----------------------------------------------------- BUT - WHAT 'KIND' of BIZ ? - Ok, so the 'question' now becomes -- from the multitude of possibilities out there -- what kind of a business should I be looking at? That's a tough one. One of the highest paying professions is in SALES. Although not technically a 'business' - some of the largest incomes are made by highly successful sales professionals. However, most sales positions don't offer the opportunity for leverage -- and territories can become restricted or made smaller -- and most sales jobs mean that the salesperson must 'keep-on-selling' in order to keep cash flow coming in [there's no 'passive income' being developed]. Franchise? - Often, one of the first impulses is to look at some kind of a FRANSHISE -- because most feel there's a "safety" factor at play. There are indeed many successful Franchises out there. But there are also some real drawbacks [to both 'traditional' businesses (including Mom & Pop setups) - and to 'Franchises']. --(1)- the large capital outlay required -- (2)- the fact that there's no leverage [unless you're the FranchisOR -vs- the FranshisEE] -- (3)- many Franchises are 'stacked in favour of the FranshisOR [very strict rules - high 'royalties', etc], and many are in fact, high risk, with failures not uncommon -- and (4)- in most cases, these businesses end up owning the 'owner', with punishing hours, around the clock. It can become a high stress venture very quickly -- the very thing we wish to escape. ---------------------------------------------------- 
How About a HOME Business? - Here's the new reality -- the overwhelming trend right now -- especially for Baby Boomers [who see their retirement plans evaporating, but still feel energetic] -- is to be able to create PASSIVE income streams, working from HOME - where the cost is minimal - and where 'they' have more control. Add to that, the power of the Internet + a good phone + a decent laptop + the right products/ services / investments -- and 'bingo!' -- they're 'positioned' in the right direction. And they can develop their income from sources all over the world. That is -- IF -- they do their research + their homework carefully. A BUSINESS is not an 'end in itself' -- it's only a 'beginning'. But, Can "I" be Successful? - I hear this statement all the time => "I feel like I'm on a treadmill -- I'm struggling to get ahead -- I want more success in my life -- can a Home Business or Investment Plan give that to ME?" -- YES - you can be successful - depending on what it is that you wish to accomplish. And that will vary from person to person. For one person, it could be time freedom - for another, a secure retirement, new friendships, or high recognition. You can build a successful future. From a purely 'economic' standpoint -- it may be by supplementing your current income -- or by completely replacing it - the choice is up to you. For some, it may be an extra $500./month (for a grocery / car / dentist payment) -- and for others, it can mean a completely new and satisfying career.
