Hi fellow ryzers: I am Amita Rao. Born and educated in Mumbai, I live with my husband and sons in the suburb of Chembur. My elder son is studying computer engineering and my younger son is in the 10th standard this year.

Professionally, I teach biology at the SSC and HSC level.

My husband is in the computing industry. His career has seen us taking up residence in Rotterdam, Holland and Kingston, New York.

I found there’s more to Holland than the Tulip bulbfields of Keukenhof and windmills of Kinderdijk.
I was impressed with the cleanliness, timeliness and friendliness of Western Europeans in general and the Dutch in particular. Dutch women dress stylishly and keep very neat homes. Dutch cities have cobbled streets, bicycle paths, and footpaths running parallel to canals with duck and swans in them. Open air cafes with elegantly dressed blond people enjoying the sunshine of a Dutch summer. The miniature city of Madurodam. The Flower market at Aalsmeer. Gouda kaas (cheese). Delft blauw china-ware. “De Lijnbaan”, Europe’s first totally pedestrian, shopping centre with its designer shops where you can shop leisurely without being bothered by traffic or snow and rain. The Zuidplein Shopping Center, the largest covered shopping center in Holland. The peculiar Surinami grocery shops that speak a mix of Hindi and Dutch. The Piet Blom designed yellow and blue cube-dwellings at Blaak. Rotterdam was a unique experience.

A Rotarian since 1997, I was secretary of the Rotary Club of Bombay Chembur West in 2002-03.

Personally, cooking has been and continues to be my hobby since I was a little girl. Black Forest Cake, Orange Cake and Brownies are among my favorites.

Recently, I've added chocolates:dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, streaked chocolate, liqueur-filled chocolates, flavored chocolates and chocolates embedded with nuts and dry-fruits.
