I write.

Because I like words. Because I derive my sense of self (and my lack of the self-sense) from words. Because sometimes, words are the only refuge there is.

Sometimes, I write for money.

More often I generate a lot of words, for neither love nor money, but simply because there is nothing else I can do.

To cut through the verbiage, I write for a living. News (reporting, editing etc) was my bread and butter. Have done a book or two on the side.

What else do I write?

Poetry. A blog. In sudden bursts of enthusiasm, I write fiction, but mostly non-fiction. A few scripts. A few short stories. [One of the last few additions to my collection of scripts was courtesy my last trip to Lucknow.... A winter walk in the nippy awadhi breeze, a lukewarm sun and time to stare.]

A few years ago, I was freelancing - writing for just about anybody who would pay... websites, magazines, papers, individuals. Very briefly, and rather disastrously, I worked with a small start-up firm called Qi Mediaworks. Mistake, that.

I've also worked as a sub-editor, a reporter, an editorial coordinator, and a copy-editor (in that order).

Other Things I did:

Spent four months volunteering at the World Social Forum 2004. Lots of colour, lots of gyaan, lots of camaraderie, some dreadlocks. A brush with the 'reds'. A mild flirtation with a communist newspaper called Yugantar.

Also worked in Kathmandu, with the news division of a TV channel. Loved the city, love some people in it. Someday, I want to go back to Kathmandu. They say that in the spring, the valley turns blue... blue mimosa blossoms line practically every street, every lane.

And I really don't know what I'm doing here. But I don't know what I'm doing in this world either. So, what the hell?

Speaking of hell, does anyone know of a lonely shack somewhere in a remote, hilly village? Because that's my vision of heaven (temporary, of course). I can't afford one yet, but someday...

And I have nothing else to say right now.

Indulge me. Sign my guestbook!
