DON"T BUY OR SELL ANOTHER INTERNET LEAD UNTIL YOU READ THIS! How much money have you spent on internet leads so far this year? How many companies did you go through “the dance" with? Do you know how to befriend your lead generation company or broker to protect yourself as well as your vendor? Are you a lead aggregator in search of buyers with greater understanding? Learning to lower your risk pays off in more ways than one. It is possible to both minimize your exposure and develop a strong ally with a new source or lead buyer. In the process, you increase the likelihood of building a satisfactory and profitable long-term relationship. The relationship between buyers and lead providers is a delicate one, and mutual trust and respect must be built over time. The best companies often avoid skittish clients. Keep a calm, cool head in initial dealings with new sources, and remember that patience is a virtue. Mistrust undermines the natural development of a quality vendor/buyer relationship. Consider the following example: Jack purchases 40 internet generated refinance leads from a company recommended by an acquaintance. He spends two days programming a form submission for the buyer so the prospects can be referred in real time. Over the next two days, Jack receives 20 forms in real time as agreed. Next, Jack identifies 10 leads for return to the seller. Of the 10 leads Jack returned, 8 were bogus. Jack feels he has only received 10 leads total. Jack declares the lead vendor “bad” and seeks a full refund immediately. In Jack’s estimation, the seller is “just like the rest of them” that sell fake data. The company’s position is that Jack rejected far too many of their leads, and he is assessed as a high risk client. After examining the leads Jack returned, the seller notices that none of the names match the refinance applications delivered to Jack. In the eyes of the vendor the payable leads were not those Jack was reporting on. The standoff continues with the vendor insisting targeted prospects were referred, while Jack insists there was corruption. In actuality, the 10 leads Jack rejected were the first two days of fake data posted to test the real time delivery. The leads were supposed to be fictitious. In this example, both the lead provider and the buyer hastily agreed to end the relationship before it even began! Both jumped to conclusions over a simple reporting issue commonly encountered with programming development. Fear and mistrust ensured the logical solution – putting the campaign on hold for a few days to investigate the issue – never occurred to either. Instead, both parties left defeated. Mistrust and suspicion among both lead providers and lead buyers often reflects negative experiences from poor dealings in the past. Whether you’re searching for debt relief, refinancing, home improvement, or auto loan prospects makes little difference. Nearly everyone in the internet marketing field has encountered “the bad guys” whose bite makes us twice shy. Recognize the uncomfortable nature of initial dealings for what it is, and tread lightly but steadily forward. Prudence may be wise, but paranoia alienates “the good guys” out there waiting to be found! Create a mental starting point when moving into a new relationship. Keep the following four essential truths of internet marketing in mind: • It takes time to see results • Both buyers and the sellers feel vulnerable due to monetary risk • Prior experiences make both parties extremely cautious and wary •There are good people out there! To ensure success, new campaigns should be approached with a formula that is predetermined and realistic. Begin with the "mental starting point" above, and take into consideration the needs of both the buyer and the seller. One party shouldn’t take all the risks, or there is an unbalanced relationship underway. New lead acquisitions entail a partnership. Buyers and sellers are engaging in a symbiotic relationship in which both parties are necessary and should benefit equally. Return policies and payment terms should be discussed and detailed prior to delivery/ acceptance of the first lead. Large companies and small buyers (and vice versa) often have very different perspectives on acceptable delivery schedules and quality assessment. Outlining what each party needs and expects of the other prior to engaging in business eliminates conflicts and saves time. Clearly defined, upfront agreements allow you to move into a new relationship slowly, calmly, and systematically. The focus will be on building a foundation for a long term relationship right from the very beginning. With a formula in hand, marketing companies and lead buyers can triumph over an uncomfortable situation. Both parties can then focus on the work at hand, and are guaranteed the most important thing in a vendor/buyer relationship: a mutually beneficial alliance.
