Trauma and rehabilitation expert Dr. Richard Karrel has published articles in emergency management of cervical spine injuries, heart surgery in the ER without the benefit of cardiac by-pass capabilities and emergency procedures in the ER. He wrote a chapter on acid base studies in the first clinical, emergency medicine textbook published in 1982. Dr. Richard Karrel earned his BS in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago and his MS from Belgium's Free University of Brussels. Following his premedical education, Dr. Karrel achieved admission to Northwestern University, where he graduated with his Doctor of Medicine . Dr. Richard Karrel completed his residency training at the University of Chicago, where he was promoted to Chief Resident of the Emergency Medicine Department. Karrel is a Fellow in the American College of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Richard Karrel has spoken at conferences throughout Illinois and Indiana and created three alcohol and drug treatment centers during his career. He is the former medical director and founder of Rush Chemical Dependency Treatment Program, the Medical Director of the Rush Occupational Health System and the Medical Review Officer at Rush-St. Luke's Presbyterian Medical Center in Chicago. Karrel also created and directed LIFEBACK one of the largest alcohol and drug treamamnt centers in Indiana.He is a former assistant professor in Medicine and instructor in Psychiatry at the same medical center. Karrel also was a consultant to the Dissociative Disorder's Program (Multiple Disorders) at Rush North Shore Medical Center in Skokie, Illinois. Karrel was one of the first physicians in the country to be certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine. Currently, Dr. Richard Karrel serves as Medical Director and CEO of Metro Medical Associates in Louisville, Kentucky, where he devises pain management treatment plans for post-accident patients. He also is the director of the Richard Karrel, MD Narcotic Management Program in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Karrel is a Diplomat of the American College of Emergency Medicine. Today, Dr. Richard Karrel resides in Kentucky and is a member of numerous medical associations, including the American College of Emergency Medicine and the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. A former triathlete and national champion swimmer, Dr. Karrel enjoys staying physically active. He recently wrote a dark comedy novel entitled 911.
