Sign OF The Calla Lily: Book 1 Four and a half stars out of Five

Sara Price 264 Pgs.

Sign of the Calla Lily is a delightful fantasy story full of wonderful characters and believable magic. There are dragons, spells, and villains who come to life in the pages. Sara Price has written a book that you will not want to stop reading once you start. It is thoroughly an enjoyable book that leaves you wanting more. Her characters have depth and you can feel yourself being transported into their world.

Janea and Cassia’s life convene for a short time, when Cassia is brought to the camp where she is a slave. The love that grows between the slave woman and infant is strong and unending, even after being torn apart, when Cassia is sold at the age of two. Janea earns her freedom from slavery for taking care of Cassia, after the child she loves is sold. As the story unfolds, there is danger, love, and magic ahead for both women.

Ms. Price has done a superb job writing this truly charming story. The title and ending gives you hope there will be a Book 2 of Sign Of The Calla Lily to look forward to. I highly recommend this book to all fantasy lovers, and even to those who aren’t. This would be an entertaining book to read to children that I’m sure would keep their attention for days. I will admit that I would never have chosen to read this book, if I were not a reviewer, because fantasy has never been my favorite genre. This book has opened my mind to the possibility of fantasy quickly become one of my favorites.

Rise of the Wizards Book 1 ISBN: 1-4137-3866-4

On the Planet Vega the race of Vegans are divided by those with magic and those without. A powerful wizard Varselles rose to bring them peace. As he aged he feared he would find no wizard worthy of his powerful Rainbow staff. He shattered it and scattered the shards across the globe. Now a thousand years later eleven of the twelve pieces have been found. Those eleven sleep waiting for the twelfth and most powerful wizard to join them so they could rise to the world council seat.

A young wizard apprentice named Deanna is that very one. During her schooling she is challenged by a dark wizard council, seeking to destroy her before she can gain full power and challenge them for the world council position. Overcoming many obsticals she must decide if she is to rise to her destiny, run from it, or forge a new destiny of her own.

My First Review For Rise of the Wizards

Rise of the Wizards Wizard Chronicles, Book 1 Four out of Five Stars

Rise of the Wizards by Sara Price is as much in the style of Diane Duane's "So You Want to Be a Wizard" series as the Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling. In fact, since Price's main character is a young girl, the argument could be made that Deanna has more in common with Nita than she does with Harry. Perhaps the main difference between Price's book and the others is that her story takes placed not on Earth, but on Vega. The characters in Rise of the Wizards are interesting. There are moments where it seems that the kids are acting too old for their chronological age, but Deanna's immediate group of friends are all orphans, which accounts for some of that.

The story takes place at a school for wizards, where the children take classes in potions and astronomy, broom riding and gardening. The children undergo final exams and projects, but also trials, which can be dangerous. Deanna is tremendously talented, and is often in dangerous situations that land her in the infirmary. Someone wants her dead, and that someone has sent his underlings to kill her.

Price uses her story to make a bit of a political stand. Deanna, being female, will have a hard time getting other wizards of the still-frozen council to follow her. There is only one other female council member, and she was betrayed, probably because she is female. It's kind of sad, in a way, that there might be another world with intelligent life, and it too is plagued with sexism. It's good to read a story with a strong female main character when the shelves are dominated by books with male characters. The message that Price provides is that girls are just as good, and that with work and effort, girls can do anything they want.

Readers who have enjoyed Duane's or Rowling's books will likely also enjoy Rise of the Wizards. I, for one, am looking forward to Book 2.
