Award-winning writer and journalist Jim Shahin commands a long and successful track record in the field of journalism. Reporting on a vast array of topics since his early years as a Staff Writer at the University of Michigan’s college newspaper, the Michigan Daily, Jim Shahin imbues his work with more than 30 years of experience. Jim Shahin has held a variety of positions since then, including Staff Reporter at the Austin American-Statesman, Politics Editor at the Austin Chronicle, Lifestyle and Food Columnist for Chile Pepper Magazine, and Senior Editor and humor columnist for American Way Magazine. Along the way, Jim Shahin’s articles have appeared in such diverse publications as Spin, GQ, Texas Monthly, Parenting, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, among many others. In 1988, Jim Shahin won his first major honor in journalism with the Western Publishing Association Maggies Award for Best News Story. The Western Publishing Association again bestowed a Maggies Award upon Jim Shahin in 1989 for Best Feature Story. While employed by American Way Magazine, Jim Shahin won the Bronze Medal for Best Article (Land Travel) from the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation (Lowell Thomas Award). Jim Shahin later earned accolades for his opinion columns, including the Press Club of Dallas Katie Award and the Women in Communications Clarion Award. An educator as well as a journalist, Jim Shahin first taught at the prestigious Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University during the winter semester of 2003. Jim Shahin's high marks earned him additional posts as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Syracuse for the 2005-2006 and 2007-2008 school years, teaching such courses at Newhouse as Magazine Article Writing, Magazine Editing, and Advanced Magazine Editing. Additionally, Carlow University recruited Jim Shahin as a Guest Lecturer of creative nonfiction for its low-residency MFA program in January 2006. Jim Shahin also served as Faculty Adviser for a magazine development project as part of the Executive Education program at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD. Member of the Journalism Education Association (JEA) and the Society of Professional Journalists, Jim Shahin maintains the highest professional and ethical standards in his work. Jim Shahin is an active member of his community; one of Jim Shahin's proudest achievements is heading a three-year effort to build a recording studio at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, a public arts magnet high school in Washington D.C.
