Student of Life is written with wit, understanding, and insight from hands-on experience. I "lay-it-all-on-the-table" with the intention of sharing what I've learned with others. With a strong believe that we're here to teach & learn from one another, Student of Life is a positive beacon that connect people, provokes thought, encourages and inspires, making readers laugh out loud. I've implemented new perceptions and choices through experimenting with extensive research in self-help, psychology, alternative medicine, metaphysics and leadership development. In addition, I've learned about myself through film, the corporate world, international travel, relationships, nature, and interviews. I believe life is a classroom, and the resources of learning are endless. I've been published in The Denver Post, Nexus-Colorado's Holistic Journal, In-Light Times, The Art of Healing, Networking Times, The Downtown Denver News and others. In addition, I've self-published three poetry books & written a travel column to inspire airline employees to explore exotic cultures worldwide. (Come on, get your passports folks! It's time to fly.) With nearly 15 years in the airline industry with a specialty in conflict management, I've gained great insight into the corporate world. I've worked abroad on several projects and on several task teams to improve bottom-line and the work environment. I've been professionally coached by Lee Ann Del Carpio, executive coach and president of Inner Power International, by executive coach David Kruger, author of over a dozen books, and by executive coach, and director/producer David Brownstein, president of Hollywood Coaching. I’d love to share what I've learned. In these stressful times, people are re-evaluating the choices they've made and whether or not to continue down the same path, or to take a chance on something new. Student of Life is a candid breath of fresh air, complementing both personal and professional growth and satisfying the reader's thirst for something new. If you'd like to make a home for my syndicated column in your publication, please be in touch. All the best to you, Lisa Jo Barr *****Available for freelance assignments. Then the negative what-ifs begin: “What if this bad thing happens, then this bad thing will happen” and so on and so forth, until you’re anxiety level is a five-alarm fire with a bleak outlook of despair. It’s easy to let negativity snowball. For example, you wake up from debt denial. You’re 20k in debt. This rude awakening inspires panic-filled, domino-falling thoughts, like: “What if I can’t pay it off, then I’ll have to file bankruptcy. What if I lose my home, and then I’ll end up on the streets. What if I lose my job, then I’ll end up in the gutter.” And on and on it goes. Ouch! How can you turn it around? Do a “what-if up!” While surfing the web, I stumbled across “what-if up” taught by coaches Jeanna Gabellini and Eva Gregory in their program “The Prosperity Game.” Here’s how it works: Let’s say I find myself knee-deep in credit card debt. Instead of the anxiety catastrophizing "what-if down", here’s a "what-if up": “What if I found new creative opportunities to bring in three times my income in the next month?” Great! “And what if I find this new income doing what I really love?” Fantastico! “What if I use this extra income to wipe the debt slate clean and grow thousands of dollars into my bank account? Then I can buy my whole wardrobe at Chico’s!” Wow! “What if, as I act on the gifts that I was born with, I feel so safe and comfortable in my own skin, that I open up to new forms of love and sharing?” Rock -N- Roll! “What if I meet other people living their dreams and what if I throw a big swanky theme party in a different city every six months to bring together inspiring people—and we have a blast all night long?” I’m feeling better already! “What if my leap of faith into living my dreams is my big break and what if I quit my day job, making tons of money doing what I love the most? What if I have more time to do speaking engagements, write books and attend conferences?” This feels good! “What if my life was an inspiration to all those I meet? What if I consistently feel like I deserve the best and am always taken care of? What if I always followed my intuition and my life becomes the greatest adventure ever?” Yippy!! “What-if up” dialogue is a great exercise to talk out loud to yourself and brainstorm all the beauty of your limitless dreams by letting all the details flow and hang out. It helps to calibrate your insides, which is key: when your insides feel good, then you’re more likely to take bold actions toward what you want, rather than run away in fear. “What if ups” can move you out of depression and into passion. I believe it’s important to feel and express your feelings in healthy ways, even if they’re negative, and to explore the meaning and understand the cause. It’s part of getting to know yourself. But ruminating in it is pure paralyzing hell (oh..and btw--I've had plenty of experience on this one!!) Besides, if you start feeling like you deserve and get excited and feel peaceful inside, then you’ll attract these things into your life. You inner state is a magnet to the outer world. It’s the great mirror effect. Also, when you practice “what-if up,” your dreams and visions aren’t just immediately rationalized away or bombarded with negative conditioning with self-talk such as: “I’ll never do that," "it couldn’t possibly happen to me," "that’s wishful thinking,” or the sarcastic, “Yeah, right.” Use the “what if up” to explore different facets of wealth (and it ain’t all about money, but money can definitely be a part of it--we like our international first class tickets and BMWs now, ya hear?!). The richness of life begins from the inside—the state of being here now and enjoying life, moment by moment, by sharing with people, learning and knowing yourself. Try it! What if you like it, and the sparks of your dreams ignite? ------c. 2004 by Lisa Barr--------------------------------- Other important LISA Jo stuff ------- ********************************** * * ** My vision is to share my experience with others on a massive scale. I've been through a LOT and done many things--such as journeys to Hong Kong, Australia, Italy, Thailand, Argentina and Indonesia. I've learned many lessons in unique ways, have highly developed and keen intuition and the ability to articulate and convey strong emotion and insight in stories, articles, poems, columns, and mixed media. ** Integrity is very important to me. So is freedom of expression. I love to learn new ways to communicate with people, and with myself. Some favorite authors: I like Covey, Canfield, and other innovative authors who write about professional entwined with personal growth. I also love Gary Zukav and Linda Francis, Barbara Brennan, and others. I love to research and learn! Cheers to love and friendship all around the world!! The world is a equisitely beautiful place---so please get your passport and travel. We can make art out of life. All the best, Lisa PPS - a poem I wrote: ROOMS with a VIEW by Lisa Jo Barr In the blue room The smell of flowers Make me hungry for love. In the red room My pedestal is empty And my cupboards Are full of candy hearts And the dancing silhouettes Of soldiers. In the green room Gardens tell the time Of the land beneath my feet. In the yellow room Sunspots stain shadows And bumblebees are the gift of tears Stinging when the world becomes numb. In the orange room Thoughts are loud And tangled like tangerine taffy Strung on a rusty swing set At sunset. In the purple room The moon is always full And the ocean is my vanity mirror Shifting like a liquid hourglass With every mood. c. 1998 Sign in to be able to view lisabarr's guestbook and friends list!
