I do web development and usability projects, of any scale, as McCandlish Consulting. My clients have ranged from photographers and bands to professional firms doing extensive e-commerce.

My areas of concentration are standards-compliant Web application development, custom professional-grade blog installation, usabilty, accessibility and information architecture.

I am also the acting CCO and webmaster of a nonprofit organization called the CryptoRights Foundation, which focuses on security applications for human rights groups and humanitarian aid workers, among others.

I was recently the Technology Director for Integrity Incorporated, a Toronto-based consulting firm specializing in business governance, usability, legal/regulatory and technical standards compliance assurance, and security auditing.

Formerly, during about 9 years with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), I wore many hats. I was one of the world's first professional online activists, pioneering many of the techniques still used today (e.g. my checklist of standardized online action alert features). Throughout my tenure there I was the webmaster of what was, because of the "Blue Ribbon Campaign for Online Freedom of Speech" that I spearheaded for the organization, the 4th most-linked-to site in the world (according to Webcrawler stats; we were only beaten by Microsoft's and Netscape's browser affiliate/logo programs, and one major search engine.) I also wrote for & edited over 150 issues of EFF's online newsletter, "EFFector". I have been quoted in almost every major newspaper in the country multiple times, as well as many domestic magazines and foreign publications. I also co-authored (with Robert B. Gelman), "Protecting Yourself Online: The Definitive Resource on Safety, Freedom, and Privacy in Cyberspace" (Harper, 1998)

Educational background: University of New Mexico (where I was also a computer consultant), Eastern New Mexico University and College of Santa Fe; computer science, technical writing, anthropology and linguistics; 1987-1993.

You can also find me on LinkedIn, another business networking site.
