My
wife and I moved to Hartwell, GA back in 2005 (after living all of my
life in Atlanta) to help take care of my parents, who also moved to
Hartwell shortly after we did. That's correct. We moved there first
in order to get them to move away from a traffic filled neighborhood.
My mother was suffering from Altzheimers. She passed away in September
2007. My dad lived alone until last year and then he moved in with us.
He now has dimentia and there are new challenges everyday... but we
are happy to have him with us.
Living
in Hartwell is very different from life in Atlanta, expecially when
it comes to getting around town. We live in a house on Lake Hartwell,
and yet we are only two miles from downtown. The Super Wal-Mart is 3
miles from our house, and Liberty
Baptist Church (where we attend) is around 10 miles away. My job
is on the computer, so I only have about 10 steps to get to work every
morning.
I
play the trumpet in church every week. I started playing the trumpet
when I was 8 years old. I played in the East Atlanta Elementary Band
and then at South West Dekalb High School. Our high school band toured
Europe in 1970. (We actually only played a couple of times in three
weeks, but it was a lot of fun.) We won the Virginia Beach Music Festival
in 1972 and we went back as the Honor Band in 1973. I had high hopes
of being a professional trumpet player and went to Georgia State University
for a year. However, my life got turned around (in the wrong direction),
my playing got worse instead of better, and I gave up.
After
a couple of years wasting my life, I was invited to First Baptist Church
of Atlanta. I heard Dr. Stanley preach and I heard the orchestra play,
and I knew that I needed to be there. After attending for several weeks,
I was finally ready to repent and place my faith in Jesus Christ. I
had thought that the toughest part was in forgiving myself for walking
away from Him in the first place... but He was just allowing me to see
how wretched I really was and that I didn't really deserve mercy like
I thought that I did. After several more weeks, I picked up my trumpet
and joined the orchestra. The director heard me play and within a few
minutes, he helped me correct a couple of things that I was doing wrong
so that I could enjoy playing again.
I
played in the orchestra at First Baptist Church of Atlanta for over
twenty years. I also played at Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta for
a couple of years, and then at First Redeemer Church in Cumming for
a couple of years. All were fairly large churches, so coming to Hartwell
was little bit of a culture shock. My niece came to visit and commented
that Hartwell was sort of like Mayberry. Everybody waves to you as you
go down the street, and everybody knows everybody's business.
