Unleashing the Human Potential

Amartya Sen defined development as the process of expanding people’s choices,in other words, functionings and capabilities to function, the range of things that a person could do and be in her life.

I have been thinking about poor people and development for some years now, which does not mean that I have got some answers/solutions to the problems. But, it merely made me decide upon my “calling”. I will concentrate on areas which will make a difference to people. Amartya Sen's ideas has been my guiding light for this.

The other principle has been the goal of maximum impact.

If I can due to my work:

  • able to enhance a person's ability to buy a TV/Washing machine etc
  • able to enhance a person's ability to have 3 square meals a day rather than 1 square meal a day
  • able to help a person read and due to this he reads the employment column in the newspapers and finds a higher income job.

If we look at the 3 options for maximum impact I will rather select Option 2/3 against Option 1.

    Deeshaa Ventures

An entrepreneurial institution, Deeshaa Ventures, aims to transform the rural Indian economy and thereby contribute to India's economic development. The transition from a low-equilibrium trap to a vibrant and dynamic rural India poses enormous challenges, and consequently provides great opportunities for all, including the private sector.

The primary goal is to implement an innovative economic model called Rural Infrastructure & Services Commons (RISC) which has the potential for catalysing sustainable economic growth by addressing the primary causes of low economic growth.

urbanization of a country’s population is both a cause and a consequence of economic development. The problem therefore is how can one urbanize the population of rural India without the attendant rural to urban migration? Clearly the solution is to urbanize the rural population in place.

This urbanization can be achieved in place only by bringing to the rural population all the services and functionalities that are normally only available in cities to the rural area itself.

from the concept paper on RISC by Atanu Dey

    Deeshaa Network

Deeshaa group is an extension of our plan in Deeshaa ventures.

India's economic development is predicated on the economic development of rural India since the majority of Indians live there. Rural income opportunity depends on a wide range of services delivered inexpensively to the population. RISC is an economic model which is based on the premise that the provision of services is expedited by the presense of a standardized infrastructure platform. Given limited resources, investment in infrastructure provision must be done efficiently for provision of services to be economically sustainable. RISC presents a viable schema.

We have now 200 members (& growing) from all over the world who are interested in the development of rural India and India in general. You will find good and meaningful discussions with an emphasis on "what works" solutions. You can also find a good network for your to leverage and build on any idea you have.

    WorldisGreen

World is Green opens a window into the real India, Bharat. It covers individuals, ideas, innovations and institutions developing rural India and also other parts of the world whose work and ideas are relevant to rural India. Rural India is where 740 million Indians struggle to live. India can never be a developed nation unless rural India is developed.

Green is a metaphor for growth, development, progress, sustainability, nature and good things. It stands for all the things rural India needs to be a better place.

    An Ambulance Friendly City

A personal experience in my city (Hyderabad,India) in navigating an ambulance is the source of this article. I believe that increasing 'sensitivity' to an Ambulance is a tough job and hence I propose a 'system' solution. The goal is to create information sharing between the participants through networking and developing new traffic rules including an 'Ambulance signal'.

Find this article on the AFC bloki site. I see that my solution can be improved upon and need many other complementing solutions to make this happen. But I believe that this will make 'any' city an Ambulance friendly city and may save many lifes in the process. Feedback/help will be highly helpful in *actionizing* this idea.

Keep in touch. I would love to know your passions, interests and talents.
