Oct 13, 2004 3:07 pm Bluetooth and VoIP Convergence or Adoption, your thoughts?
Guy Yasika
I recently attended a VoIP trade show in LA. As part of that show we were demonstrating our Voice over Bluetooth audio driver. What that means is I had a BT headset on my ear and it was paired with my PC, not my cell phone. Bluetooth simply eliminates the need for a wire.

While at the show I was surround by all this hardware designed to trick the end user that they were no longer on a regular POTS ( Plain Old Telephone Service ) handset but now an IP based phone system. Now when you are software company in the midst of all these hardware companies it gets you thinking about Voice over IP ( VoIP ) differently and adoption differently.

One last point before I get to my epiphany .Our approach is to keep the VoIP calls on PC or Pocket PCs. Of course you still bridging to the PSTN ( Public Switched Telephone Network ) to connect to these legacy systems. We follow protocols such as SIP and H323. Keeping calls on these intelligent devices allows for our full collaboration features to be used.

Here was my observation. Cell phone use and bluetooth headsets are becoming popular. People that used these headsets were very comfortable with them. I was not the only one using a Bluetooth headset. But I was the only one using it paired to my PC.

So my final thought was; can bluetooth headsets actually create adoption to use softphones on PCs. after all what difference does it make if my headset connects to my phone, my PC, or my car? I found this rather comforting thought is it supports our software and design decisions.

I would be interested in hear your thoughts

Regards
Guy
