Karen Taylor
Traffic exchanges can be effective if you use them correctly. On the other hand, traffic exchanges can easily divert you from your original mission, as membership and activity in traffic exchanges has become a business in itself.

I would recommend traffic exchanges ONLY if you are able to join at the pro level (so as not to have to spend your valuable time surfing for credits), or join free prepared to purchase ad packages.

Join ONLY if you have your own website, your own splash pages, your autoresponder already set up, and a good tracking system in place so that you can compare the ROI for each and every traffic exchange you join (sales or referrals) with that of advertising elsewhere, such as classified ads, pay-per-click, blogging, Squidoo lenses, Hub pages, posts in social networking site, Twitter, etc.

The current "wisdom" regarding the use of TEs is NOT to put your program URL (or splash pages for it) into rotation at traffic exchanges, but rather concentrate on building your "list" - and most of these builder programs advertise only other traffic exchanges and related programs (such as banner-makers, splash-page makers, autoresponders, etc.). Nowadays, surfers are seeing fewer and fewer actual websites and more and more ads for other exchanges in almost ALL the exchanges, making, in my opinion, surfing much more repetitive and extremely BORING.

Unless your product or service relates directly to Internet marketing (tools, tutorials, etc.), you're probably wasting your time in traffic exchanges. You're more than likely going to find much more success with wise participation in social networking sites (Ning sites, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and through blogging and social bookmarking than you will clicking in a traffic exchange surfbar. And I say these things as a long-time user of traffic exchanges, and member (still) of many!

For anyone wanting to head the TE direction, PM me for links to some good instructional resources BEFORE you join a single one!

And, as an alternative to traffic exchanges, you might want to try text ad exchanges. They put more emphasis on email advertising (with view-for-credit links) and are overall more versatile. Again, there are "good ones" and "not so good ones" (in my personal opinion, and I'm basing that on what individual programs allow you to do, not on tracking ROI).
