I use PHP Nuke for my own site (Mental Sludge) and I was appalled at the code. It's so kludgy!! I had to patch several things up myself, and add functionality that REALLY should have been there out of the box. I'm involved with a group who is getting another site (MindFrag.net) off the ground, and we're using GeekLog over there. If nothing else, it beats PHP Nuke! IMHO.
