A short story and food for thought.

Friday I went to purchase a coffee maker. Mine for some ungodly reason decided to stop pulling the water up from the reservoir and wouldn't make me my coffee!

I went to Bed, Bath & Beyond with a gift certificate from my birthday and a 20% off coupon and my machine ended up costing me ... ready? 43 cents!!! Now that's cool right? This is not the point I"m getting to.

For approx 15-20 minutes, a young sweet salesboy (he had to be 19) with a shy grin and sweet demeanor stood and listened to me talk out loud about all the different kinds I was faced with ... It's been a while since I purchased a machine and the prices were bizarre! Anywhere from $30.00 to $200.00 !!! With so many different features and buttons and appearances! Wow!

So, there I stood walking up and down this isle, talking to myself and 1/2 talking to the fella about why I'd want a machine or why I wouldn't ... one didn't have a caraf, the other had a thermal pot, another had a coffee grinder ... at one point I thought I was dead set on getting one that you would place the coffee cup underneath to get one cup of fresh coffee at at time ... after talking to myself a few more minutes ... and politely looking at this sales person behind me (the sweetheart If I were 15 years younger LOL) I finally came to a decision on which one I wanted based on preference, and my nature ... and pulled one off the shelf.

In other words. I realized :

1. I wanted a pot with a safety feature of turning itself off because I'd forget;
2. One that gave me my coffee quickly when I poured it, as opposed to waiting for it to sift onto a cup I held beneath it; (I'd be impatient because I have work to do!)
3. Cost effective;
4. A good name brand;
5. One that would look appealing to the eye and I liked it's features and how it was set up;
6. One that was easy to clean etc.,

You get the idea. :)

As it often does, my mind began to wander around onto other topics, as a coach, I began to wonder if people in general really know themselves from the inside out as I discovered I know myself when I was babbling away about my preferences and what I "need" in something. This applies to everyday life, decisions as well as the people in my life.

Do you really talk to yourself and make decisions based on what you can do for someone, or what you need? Do you methodically go down in your mind of the choices and different avenues that we are all given in life! Do people know themselves well enough and have the inner strength to learn how to express and communicate these needs to others in a manner that gets these needs met?

On the one hand this could appear to be a commercial for myself for coaching and maybe under the surface it is :) However ... this is something that I feel people should really think about.

What are people's choices and how are they going to be so self aware in who they are that they are fulfilled in their lives and not wearing a mask to protect themselves? We all wear a mask from time to time, to perhaps not feel so sensitive or vulnerable, it happens ... but the "true" key of having control over ones life is to "really" know ones self and then learn how to communicate these things to others to have a balance and feel good about themselves ...

Does this make sense? Here it's 8:00 a.m. in the morning but I would suspect that this is a good question no matter what time it is :)

As all good coaches do, I offer a complimentary session for one (1) hour. Why not take advantage of it?
