How I did it |

I like this network :-)
Here's how I got noticed:
Theatre has always been my passion and, in 2001, I decided that it is to be my life's work. I set about putting together an amateur theatre group, writing a play, finding actors, rehearsing, finding sponsors, etc., all at the same time! Since sponsors weren't forthcoming (everyone was into "Pub Events" at the time and potential sponsors kept asking, "Will I get a banner on stage?") I decided to do it without sponsors.
The first task was to find a venue that didn't require a payment up front. Since there was no capital at all, booking an auditorium was out of the question. One day, at my favourite hang out, The Jazz Garden in Pune, India, I overheard the owner tell someone that he was looking for events to get his restaurant in the news. "Why not do a play?" I butted in. "Why not?" was his response, and I had my venue. We worked out a deal wherein 50% of the gate came to us and 50% to the restaurant, with dinner for the patrons thrown in.
Meanwhile I looked up my old acquaintances who were connected to newspapers. I found several, and told them what I was upto, emphasising that the venue was unusual, dinner was included and I had no sponsors.
They loved it! It had just the quixotic appeal they wanted.
Since then, I have done seven more plays at the same venue, getting oodles of newspaper coverage. In fact, whenever one of the local newspapers has space they want to fill, I'm one of those they call, to interview me about my food habits, working style, even what time I start work and what time I sleep! I have a regular column in a local magazine now and have even been featured on the local radio channel.Private Reply to Deepak Morris (new win) |
