Hey Roberta,

I am aware of the problem you are talking about. I am into Internet security and incidentally, I am working on developing secure email systems. The root cause of this problem lies in the SMTP protocol. Now, I know that there is not much we do about this, but a couple of suggestions:

1.) Use a good anti-virus program.
2.) Use Ad-aware. (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) It is a free spyware detective tool. Run it once a week.
3.) Most inportant. You will get some junk mails and a link at the bottom asking you to unsubscribe. Don't do that unless you know that it is an authentic site. Generally, all authentic sites will send you the entire url or will have a refernce to the main site url in the mail. The spam mails with an unsubscribe link are auto generated. The way that works is that, a spammer will try all possible combinations of email addresses. Now, if you happen to be a recpient and if you click the unsubscribe link, u confirm that the address is valid and the spammer uses ur address everywhere.
4.) Don't submit your primary email address on websites(not imp. ones) that ask for subscriptions.

Hope these tips help!
Regards,
Krunal
