Nov 19, 2003 7:53 am Got camera? - Keeping records
Candyce Fulford
Attention moms and dads!

This is the time of year when more photographs are taken. Are you ready? Got flash? Got batteries? Heavens! Got camera?

We are so lucky to have the advantage of digital photography. Most photos are time and date stamped for us so that we will never forget WHEN the photograph was taken. But - will we remember WHO? Until they invent a digital still camera that we can speak into ... 'this is a photo of grandpa and the kids. Grandpa's name is George, and the children are Willy, Billy, and Nellie' ... we still have to remember to write this important information down somewhere. I am betting that you still have a box of old photos hiding somewhere with one or two pictures of people you know nothing about.

Right now, make the promise to yourself that this will not be the case for future generations.

One way of keeping a record of who is who in the photos you snap this holiday season is to write events and names on a calendar. We have a wall calendar in our home that serves this purpose well. It has become habit for me to snap photos at a special occasion (or any occasion for that matter) then walk directly over to the wall calendar and write down the particulars: who - what - when - where.

Then, after I download my digital images onto my hard drive, I place the images into its own separate folder. I title the folder with the name of the event: 'Ashleigh's Talent Show November 2003' or some such title. Then, into this folder I place a text file of the who, what, when, and where. I get as detailed as I can - after all it may be months before I actually use these images in a layout.

This holiday season, try doing the same. As the years go by and memories fade you will always have that record to help you remember the details that become so important to future generations.
