We all have a photo (or a memory of a photo) from our childhood. Mine is a picture of me taken when I was about four years old.
It's one that was professionally done. I can remember the night before the photo session like it was yesterday. Every time I see the photo I can still smell the shampoo my mommy used to wash my hair. I can feel the tug of the comb as she got out each and every snarl. (I have straight baby-fine hair to this day)
I remember the pride I felt as mommy helped me dress on the 'big day'! She dressed me in a red dress that she had made herself. It had big pockets on the side into which she tucked one of my grandma's handkerchiefs.
Oddly enough, I don't remember the photo session at all!
THIS is what photographs do for us. They are the catalyst to all kinds of memories and they begin to cascade as you remember one or two details.
