Audio recordings can also be done using a standard tape recorder when either taking pictures or showing pictures to family and discussing. The audio can compliment hand written notes or journaling as well.

Some suggestions include when you take pictures, make a verbal or written notation of the picture number that shows on the camera before/after you take the picture so you have a better idea when you download the detailes of place, people, event etc.

Another is when downloading digital camera image files, always make a point of organizing folders by year - month within the year - and then NUMBER the events (e.g. 2004/06/01-birthday and 2004/06/02-alaska trip). The key is to use a combination numbering and text system because the computer organizes numerically in order where as if you use letters in the first part of the folder or file name then it wont be in the correct order. I use numbers instead of letters for months (e.g. January = 01 and December = 12) in two digits because if you only use 1 instead of 01 then December or 12 will follow the number 1. Don't ask me why, its 'technical' (smile).

Back to notations/audio recordings. There are now available hand held digital recorders that will record up to 5 hours or 5.5 hours AND provide option for exporting to computer and converting into MPG which can then be included in family history software such as FamilyTree etc, the same as a digital photo image file. The only thing is that you need to shop around as they can be as high as around $150 to as low as $80 - but well worth the cost just depends on your budget. The important things to look out for is the recording length, file format and if can be converted to MPG or WAV etc., and if the recording/s can be exported easily vs. 'stuck' on the recorder with no way to get it off - only delete and record over.

Other options, though a bit more cumbersome for those that have a laptop, most laptops now have a built in recording option some even with built in microphone in the laptop computer in addition to speaders. If this is the case although not nearly as easy to move around it can work well when talking with others before/after the event/photos are taken - but not recommended for durring photos (smile).

File numbering/labeling system should be the same for audio as photos to help in organizing and locating files later on.

If you want some tips on setting up your own standard audio tape or record to digital conversion system drop me a private e-mail and I'll bug my husband to reply with some basic suggestions since I'm not the 'tech' that he is and I'm blessed with his having fully 'rigged' me (chuckle) thanks to refurbished and open box components.

Take care all - Cynthia
