Well, it's not really my concept. It's just a synthesis of various technology proposals I've seen over the years.
People have been writing Popular Mechanics articles for years about "intelligent superhighways" with built in electronic guides.
Recently, there was a lot of publicity about an ARPA sponsored autonomous vehicle cross country race. That was a good indicator, I think, of the promise of "driverless" self-navigating cars on high ways.
Also, there is the Moller Skycar, which has been in development for it seems like twenty years or more. The Skycar is flying "car" with rotating ducted fans for lift, with completely hands of piloting and navigation, and which operates in environment of electronic airways.
Lots and lots of money and thought have gone into "advanced" transportation concepts. I don't think there is any shortage of ideas. I think future transportation capabilities will likely evolve organically rather than having the government initiate RFP's ("Request For Proposals") for a Federal Advanced National Transportation Network.
