I found the website for Tesla Motors. The facts speak for themselves. They say it much better than I can. As for the price, it can only go down as more are produced. However, they are still rather competitive with other high end sports cars.

If Tesla and other companies producing electric cars start offering a line of regular consumer electric vehicles, the cost will most likely be reduced to a fraction of that of the current price of the Tesla Roadster. You always expect to pay more for extra performance, but the performance of any electric car need be no lees than today's average consumer vehicle.
