JFL ""I would rather be in the Toyota Yaris and risk it.
It is just these sorts of Imagined Fears that limit so many people from making sensible choices and/or even being and/or accepting any sort of Innovative choices."" JFL

You missed my point. True, a Yaris will be more practical, however, until there are specific provisions on roads and highways to NOT mix weight ranges of vehicle, there will always be the risk of you and or your family driving in your Yaris @ ~1600#s and being wiped out by a behemoth vehicle @~8,000#s with their tribe still alive inside because that was the purpose of buying that large vehicle.

So why would you risk not just your life but others in your family? Did you miss the news on drunk drivers or road rage?

Ever heard of MADD?

Reality Question: When you drive on the roads today, do you see behemoth vehicles, Escalades, Suburbans, Hummers? Did you notice that Toyota and Nissan have thrown into the big Truck range with V-8 power? And they are selling! Bothe contractors and families are guying these Japanese v8 trucks.

Survey after survey, people with families and businesses that require hauling tools, materials, biz related stuff, all want big roomy vehicles. GM is responding with better MPG in that range of vehicles.

Remember the Loremo? That Italian made 157 MPG turbo-diesel car that has a low cost and weight?

Read about Loremo the 157 MPG car:

Loremo AG plans to sell the Loremo LS for less than ~$13,000.
One reason for the low consumption is the low weight of 450kg. &snip& The car is small but still provides space for 4.
The design of the car is very futuristic and has for instance no conventional doors.

Repeat
" One reason for the low consumption is the low weight of 450kg." That's 990 pounds !!

Meets your criteria for high MPG Small Engine Car but are they going to sell?

Bicycles:

I'm all for biking for fun or work, but there are problems with bike paths as well.

I ride bike ways and have notice that the city or county doesn't sweep them. They ignore complaints, as if they don't really want to provide a safe place to ride. Most of the debris is from junk falling off of cars, broken plastic parts is mainly what I see. Then their are thorns.

I have had several flat tires from glass slivers and thorns. I put that green SLIME stuff in the inner tube and it works but if you ever have to replace the tire its a big mess to remove due to the spillage between tire and tube.

The best bike paths are not adjacent to highways. Perhaps the reason why MTB popularity has risen. I ride the Ventura to Ojai bike path and there is little debris on it except for when Mother Nature does Her thing.

Either way biking with breakdowns is no fun and take time to remedy. You always need to carry repair parts and a good pump.

IMHO, the reasons for these problems is lack of innovative thinking in our local governments or if you want to put in another way they lack 'common sense'.

Biking in Ventura
"The whole thing was unavoidable," said Simmons, recalling how the SUV unexpectedly turned in front of him as he was heading out of the parking lot, sending him crashing into its windshield.

What I like - but don't see at the right $$
If you want to see the latest innovation in an Electric Motorcycle that can be ridden at freeway speeds, it's called the Vectrix and can be had for ~ $12k. I want Li-ION for that price! They are using NIMH batteries and claiming they are better, .... B A L O N E Y !

There you go, a 157mpg car for $13K an E-bike for nearly the same cost, only a lot more cool, and maybe get yourself killed by a big SUV whether riding a small call or even while pedaling a bike. Any lawmakers listening or care?
