Lest it seem as though your favorite professional organizer has suddenly become disorganized, I fear I have to report serious technical difficulties. On Saturday night, my 6-month-old iMac computer inexplicably turned itself off, and it will not turn on.
I have the AppleCare insurance plan, which means that suspect parts have been ordered (we think it's the power supply or logic board), and pending the intervening annoyances (weekends, holidays, people taking vacations), an Apple-Certified Technician is due to arrive at my location as soon as possible, though not at all soon enough.
Yes, I've followed my own advice and have backups of everything, but that's of little comfort when you have no access to a computer at which to use the backup, as was the case yesterday and will be tomorrow. My public library will be open again on Wednesday...and hopefully, by Thursday, all will be well again.
In lieu of my planned post, then, I'd like to ask you to review my prior post on emergency planning and remember the old motto of "Be Prepared".
So, if you've prepared your backups and documents, the next questions to ask are:
1) If your computer crashed and you did not have access to the data for 2 or more business days, what would you do? What if your computer worked, but you had no electricity or internet access. Where would you go to use a computer and/or the net? Do you know the hours of your local public library or the location of the nearest Kinko's or internet cafe?
2) If you were stranded, during travel or due to weather, do you have a loved one or trusted person who could access important phone numbers and reschedule appointments or make calls on your behalf?
3) Do you know or have access to the serial numbers or registration numbers on your most urgently needed pieces of hardware?
Just a few thoughts, as the Hamilton County (TN) Public Library asks me to abdicate my seat at this borrowed computer. I hope to be back and chatting with you all before the close of the week.
Happy new year!
