Over the years I have found that marketing and PR go hand in hand and am looking forward to learning more about the PR end of marketing through your experiences and businesses. I look forward to getting to know you all in this site.

08/04/04Hi #

Ashish Harode

Hi all,

I am new to this website and liked the idea. I am actually an IT professional. In fact I started with Marketing in chemical company.

Although 5 Year of experience is not a big one, but I am now getting inclined to Public Relations kind of job profile. My solutions for people have worked well. I could get people solution for their personal problems at times. Hence I have started understanding humans more clearly and cleanly. I have used my experience of studying people around me in creating my PR. It works. My manager appreciate the way my contacts grow, however I have started getting a feel that I should be utilizing this ability of mine for a full fleged career. I have infact started writing my studies to move towards writing a complete book. I have real liking for a PR kind of job profile and wish to move to a job which provides me such opportunity.

If you can provide me pointers about how I can mould my career in a full time PR kind of job profile, that would help.

With Regards,
Ashish.

Maree Agland

Hi Ximena!
I would recommend keeping as much as possible in point form and editing it well. Sometimes less is best and they can always check your references.

If you have had alot of overseas experience, I would rephrase it with something like "International understanding and diplomatic relations"....Basically it says you have learnt alot overseas in experience but by doing that have learnt cultural diversity and understanding.
Thats always a bonus when applying for a job.
Just re-phrase it all.

Up to date references are always a bonus but get them off someone who really matters in the business circles.

As far as public relations goes, you could always design a portfolio and create a business for yourself on line.
Teach people how to be a better public relations officer in their own company. Or offer your services to deal with the public or with clients during times of trouble as an independant PR officer.

Just a thought!

I´m affraid that my overseas experience may play against me instead of being in support of my applying for positions. Anything I should look out for in my CV that may deter possible employers..?

Kapil Rampal

Dear Kristen,

You can submit your release for free at sites such as http://www.prweb.com or http://www.webnewswire.com. Paid distribution is done by http://www.prnewswire.com and many others.

Hope that helps! Kapil

Hi Kapil, I am based in Toronto, Canada since 1977 but hail from the U.K. I've been in the PR biz for 20 years working in politics, corporations and nonprofit agencies. It's quite a sophisticated biz here, so I always keep in mind my core values which are "never defend the indefensible nor justify the unjustifiable."

My favourite PR assignment is in issues and crisis management.

Have a great day.

Dear Frances, Nice hearing from you! The PR business in India is going very well. The market is growing. PR as a profession has emerged only in the last 5 years so there's plenty of space for everyone to grow. I think it takes special skills to create good profiles. Where are you based? Jo Ann:

I have material handy for my clients. Hope it assists you.

Here's a checklist for your press kits.
1. Press Release - structured on 5Ws - Who, What, When, Where, Why.
2. Backgrounders are most useful when providing value to the journalist, looking for research information. So you would provide statistical information and in-depth information about your programs, issues and initiatives.
3. Previous press clippings photogcopied.
4. Your business card.
5. Website address.
6. Black and white photos, sized 8X10, or digital files specific to your announcement (optional).

Don't forget to create a media page on your website where media can find your digital photo, backgrounders, announcements and press kit.

Some Things You Can Do To Attract Publicity

  • Take a photo tells your story in front of signage or something that indicates your project. Always print the names and location on the back of the photo.
  • Use the photo with a caption in your local newspaper .
  • Get postcards printed and distribute in your community.
  • Write a press release that highlights tyour services with your solution
  • Ask about sitting on the editorial board of your local newspaper to get the concerns and perspective of your services on the editorial calendar.
  • Organize an event that profiles your project and invite the media.
  • If you need a template for your press release, PM me with your email address and I'll sent it along.

    Hello!

As a speaker and consultant, I understand that I should have a media kit. How do I go about this? What goes into it? Who gets it and when?

    Thanks for your input.

    Kapil Rampal

    Hi,

Does anyone of you have spare branding items like t-shirts, caps, pens, etc. that you will like to give out in a scheme? IndianOil is going to run a promotional scheme that will have a giveaway on purchase of 20 litres of Extra Premium Petrol. It will be a good opportunity to distribute them.

Please send across a message for any inputs and suggestions.

    Hi Kapil!
    How about this:

    * Everyone is free to express their ideas, concerns, compalints and disagreements HOWEVER offensive, religious and racial remarks; obscene language; disrespect and offensive name calling will not be tolerated.

    * Small posts less than 10 words to comment on a post should be taken to a PM as to cut down on the amount of emails and have good quality archive posts that are not time consuming to read.

    * All members must be tolerant of other cultures, beliefs, languages. What one comment is usual to one person, it maybe offensive to another. Different words mean different things to different people so we must be tolerant.

    Hello Soeb!
Perhaps if Kapil is busy, all members of this network could all add to the ground rules ourselves then Kapil only has to write them up? That way it makes the network more personal to us and structured in a way we all like.
    What do you think everyone?
