| 10/14/04 | Reaching CEO's and Decision Makers # |
Jon Humberstone

Hello, I am new to this network. The description sounds very interesting and I hope to participate in some useful discussion on the topic of reaching the Decision Maker.
One solution we have used in larger corporations: finding an "internal sponsor" or 'champion'.
It is virtually impossible to reach the CEO cold, but often you can reach someone on a slightly lower level, like the HR director, a Group Manager, etc. They are not as threatened by being 'sold to' because they know they don't actually have the final say - an easy out for them.
Choose the person based on who you think would be likely to fall in love with and champion your product. Don't be too quick to leap past them to the Decision Maker. Build a relationship of trust with them first. Once they become a 'believer', you will have someone inside the company who really understands and believes in your product who personally knows and can introduce you to the right Executive.
This is how I ended up sitting next to one of the Vice Presidents of Oracle during lunch last summer at an Oracle convention. He would never have spent 30 minutes talking to me had I not been so highly recommended by one of his trusted direct reports.
It is relationship selling and is a long cycle sale that takes patience and nurturing, but can definitely be worth it in the long run.
Regards, Jon Humberstone The Winslow Group Productive People. Powerful Teams.
P.S. Feel free to stop by my Ryze page. Sign my guest book and tell me a little about yourself.

Hi Teresa...
can you clarify your question a bit more? in general, i would expect that you as the vendor would PAY to reserve a booth... is that what you're asking? if so, it will vary from show to show to swapmeet to exhibition in my experience.
if you're wondering how much someone would charge to STAFF the booth for you, you could probably get a student for cheap, but then you have to weigh that against whether or not they're going to be up to the task of SELLING, not just sitting there looking cool.
for a small, community swap meet or business fair, at least in canada, i'd bet your safe to count on paying $15-$100 for your table/space/booth. more than anything, it usually depends on a) the savvy & experience of the event planner, b) the overal budget of the event, and c) whether or not there's an admission fee for public access. Private or conference events generally charge considerably more, because your market is delivered to you, targeted and prepared to spend. count on a few $100 to possibly $1000's depending on the size, scope & length of the event, and the amount of space & "extras" you'll require. "Extras" being if you need electricity, tables, chairs, projectors, etc etc.
does that help at all?
