Has Recession hit obituary columns too?Views: 651
Feb 09, 2009 5:36 amHas Recession hit obituary columns too?#

Lavanya Karalkar
Of late the obituary column in Hindu has become very thin as compared to average 14 announcements a day. Today,it is only four and even for the last fortnight starting I have been noticing a reduction in the announcments. Earlier, it would be the wife placing a separate ad for the husband and the daughter & family placing separate and son & family placing separate ad for the same person year after year. More than that separate institions remember their mentor in different different ads and each birthday anniversary and death day anniversary are remembered and made known to the world.

But now except for our ex president Shri Venkatraman whose death was announced number of times, the advts. as such have diminished. There can be three reasons (or more???) as far as my limited knowledge infers:

1) Recesssiom

2) Reduction in number of deaths

3) People have found different ways to advertise their love for the deceased.

Lavanyaji, really i apprecaite you for closely observing this fact. Occassionaly i check this page in the online edition of this daily, but i didnt observe this;

Just for info: here u can archive all the obituary-columns published in The Hindu - in the below link, just replace with the date that you are looking for-

LKG must be observing these columns with business interest if not social service motive..

Stranger ..I am avid reader of obituary column in Hindu and used to get surprised at the way sometimes obituary ads are placed by the near and dear relatives separately. I used to wonder whether the husband/father would have been happy to see three ads placed differently by three members of his family ..goes to show how united they are !!!
Now coming to the point, I have made the post only after going through the recent obituary ads in Hindu and today if you can see it is just 4 and day before also ( I think) it was just 4/5..Hence I just wondered whether recession has hit the obituary column too?

Sekar Narasimhamoorthy..May be you are correct as regards to business POV.

Soeb Fatehi..You won't be saying this if you keenly observe the obituary ads placed in the newspapers. Sometimes I wonder whether it shows their love for the deceased or whether they want to show who they are..Hence, the words.. May be you feel it is insensitive communication but except for a few who really mean well when they place the ad in the obituary column. in my openion, others do it to advertise their love/ themselves only. I stand and sit by my words.

"others do it to advertise their love/ themselves only"

I agree on this LK(G)

Is obituary columns a real necessity. I strongly believe there is no necessity to express your love through obituary advertisements unless its for publicity.

Obituary adds were placed to inform the readers that so and so is dead and if your are known to them and if not informed in person do join the mourning or so. The name of the wife, children or the organisation he/she is associated is given, just to identify the person, not to get publicity for the advertiser.

If you want to express your luv to the dead buy some good food and give it to some beggars. Or if you have more money go to a Old age home / Orphanage and make those there happy atleast for that day.

The Hindu orbituary adds should be just to give information to others and not to make publicity.

Pudumai..if you want a 'pudumaiyana payaNam' to heaven after death, please contact any of the 'Pathway Inc' representative who can be easily recognisable in railway platforms, local trains and bus stations too.

Jokes apart, Pudumai, everyone will become eligible to be notified in the obituary column ..you first - me first who knows? I too celebrate birthdays, I too go abroad (but no announcment made by me like SVN..going announced/coming back announced ..but why no pic SVN with the travel luggage in front of the flight) but as I read everything from the loose notebook paper given to me by the wadawala, I too read obituary.

in which dictionary have you read, "Recesssiom" . . . ?

but it is fact - you never inform when you go abroad from egmore to chinchpokli and from kasara to guindy . . . . .

coming to think of it i think it is feminine trait and
i like the way some ladies always inform about their sisters accomplishments and are modest about their own always . . . .

SF, its very natural. Its upto the sister to do the same - however, in most cases it is overlooked :)
At such times, its normally an observant person like u who bring it to everyone's notice.

I think the reply from Kanchana is a sharp reply from the female community. Dont get much of irke to them... and this their own area dont peek much into it.

Ah ha Senthil. That was not what I meant and am sure SF understood it too. I was in fact saying nice things that in case if the other sister did not mention the achievements, we normally have someone like Soeb, BG or Stranger (to mention a few) to do the honours. Another proof of how messages can be misinterpreted and sparks off a lively/heated debate - adding spice to an otherwise regular post :)
Have an awesome day.

(Translation : It is difficult to understand these ladies.. I go to support them and then they hit me back')

Don't you worry Senthil Nathan..

SF mentions

"but it is fact - you never inform when you go abroad from egmore to chinchpokli and from kasara to guindy . . . . . "

Soeb Fatehi! You need to be educated more about Pathway Inc which has overseas operations all over the world and I am sure you will agree that CEO's periodical visits are absolutely necessary to coordinate. Now please don't ask who is the CEO of Pathway Inc.

KR.. May be there are more deaths some sentimental, some political, some natural but due to recession ads are not being placed in the obituary columns. The anniversary (death) ads are placed may be due to earlier arrangments.

BG nowadays you are becoming snobbish ..may be due to the company you re keeeping.
