Jai ho, A rip off ?Views: 2339

Was having a discussion with a friend Nachiketa , an avid music lover and a great player of the harmonica, with an ear for music... He feels the song Jai Ho is a take off from an English Classical composition(the tune is being used in Nokia ads now), just the tempo of the song is fast with a few effects filled in.

This composition was earlier utilised by Salil Chaudhary in CHHAYA, the song being ITNA NA MUJHSE TU PYAR BADHA.

Now listen to Jai ho.

If you were to listen to the parts sung by Sukhwinder Singh, it sounds similar to Itna or that Western Classical Composition. Just that Jai ho is delivered fast. With a voice like Sukhwinder and the background music, the song sounds totally different,in fact unrecognizable.

I had posted the same on another network. In one of the responses, Ramesh pointed out that the initial violin piece(a slow one though) does really sound like "Jai ho" .

Any further thoughts on it ? Anyone who plays the keyboard, can you chek it out ?

No I don't think so Merlin. I know that tune and yes the Chhaya song is clearly based on it, but I can't hear it in "Jai Ho" at all. (I'm not an expert...but I have some experience with guitar and vocals).

Plus, ask yourself this:

--With all Rahman's prodigious output, does he NEED to rip off other's tunes?

--Why would he choose a movie directed by a WESTERNER to decided to rip off a classical tune? How dumb would that be??

You can always listen to a song and say that part of it sounds vaguely like another tune. There's only so many notes one can play! But I really don't agree with your friend's theory in this case.

Just my opinion, anyway! :-)

Manoj,

Yes, opinions matter, thats why the post is here :)... I tried playing the song on the harmonica, the notes come to the same, just that the speed changes in jai ho :)..

I don't doubt his abilities. He is too good in his music. But you never know. Who ever thought Slumdog would be such a hit :p.. probably it was one of those crossover movies when it was conceived.

Merlin I'm sure Danny Boyle knows that classical piece very well, and so does the Oscars panel!

The piece BTW is Mozart's Symphony no. 40, written in 1788.

A remix version features in the LG Cookie ad,

There does seem to be a similar sequence of notes in Jai Ho, in a very small fragment of the song.

If it was at all intentional, maybe ARR's way of paying homage to Mozart, which is quite possible and which the jury might find a reference honouring a famous composer. You can see the same thing in many movies where the film maker gives a nod to someone he admires and wishes to acknowledge. I doubt it can justify the song being called a rip off :-)

Sushwin, Could you check with your friend if its 10 Seconds or 10% of the content, whether it is written (text), played (music), developed (software), designed (R&D etc) or even performed (in any form).

thanks
Sam

Hi Guys...

There has been gossip in the music industry ever since AR Rahman won the Oscars that he lifted Jai Ho from Mozart Symphony 40. I however couldn't hear any similarities between the two. In the past there have been tunes that sound like each other but its not been the intention of the artist to copy.

For instance listen to the opening beats to these two tunes:

I feel all this gossip is the case of sour grapes :-)

cheers!...

I think the key is, there is way too much doubt here! When a tune is really lifted you don't have to hunt for it...you know at once. For e.g....

Kya Mujhe Pyar Hai-Woh Lamhe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EoblYYvLsE

Indonesian song Tak Bisakah
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayEvvKbNWtU

Total lift, with lots of instrumentation added (making the copy quite listenable, actually) but you can still easily identify it as a copy. This is not at all the case with Jai Ho.

I agree with Ninja...it's probably rumours being spread by copycats! :-)
