But I have a questions how long (hour or days) is it fair to leave a pet home alone - Either outside or inside?
My family used to threaten to get me a puppy, but I never felt it fair to leave a dog home alone all day. Plus I traveled with work so the animal would have to have a sitter or someone to stop by when I was away over night. (no, no; I am not thinking of getting a pet, I like my freedom to come and go without worring about who's going to take care of a pet) Thats why I love my wild critters.
Okay just post answers we all know there are cruel pet owners, so just the time you believe it goes from being unfair to inhumane.

I told you, I came to Panama to be "free." I never expected to have another dog as I've been a dog saviour for 43+ years, but I now have my Baby Doe who looks like your fawn Susan, just minus the white spots. She was skin and bones and pregnant 3 months ago, and near death, but now is thriving! When her pups were aborted, she went to her husband/lover and cried for their loss. Animals do have emotions. She was born to the streets here in Panama, but since I took her in July 4th, she has adapted well to a domestic way of life and to love and care. She loves me back. She does not like me to leave her. Last week, I walked 1/2 mile to the store and while checking out, I looked up and here walks Baby Doe up the steps exactly where I walked with my leather shoes, sniffing her way to me. I stood there and spoke to her, but she was engrossed in her own thoughts and sniffing that she wasn't listening. Then she looked up and was surprised and happy all at once. She is 1.5 yrs old about, and is like a puppy. She does not like to be away from me. I am stuck at home with her. It is difficult to find a dog sitter. She digs her way out under barb wire to find me every time I leave.
I have left my adult dogs for an entire work day in past years. With a walled yard and dog door, that felt ok with me. I don't think dogs should be left any longer than that.
Baby Doe cannot be left alone for long. Each time I leave her, I am taking a chance that she will harm herself by escaping, or being hit by a car. People say that Panamanian dogs have street smarts, but that is not so, they only have luck that eventually runs out. Dogs here do get hit by cars. We don't even have speed limits. The streets aren't wide enought to handle 2 cars let alone dogs walking and lying on the streets.
When I move to the beach, I need to get a 2 bedroom and hire domestic help, not for cleaning/cooking, but as a nanny for my dog. Some dogs suffer from separation anxiety and need guardians who can be with them most of the day. Other dogs are fine being left home all day. Smaller dogs can't always "hold it" for 8 or more hours. Personally, I have large dogs and I have worked all day and have had few problems. My boys can "hold it" for an amazingly long time. I have one dog that has been very ill this year so I don't leave him as long as I used to even though I'm sure he would be fine. It's more me than it is him and my job affords me the luxury of coming home mid day if I want.
If your looking to adopt from a rescue, you may find that many of them don't want their dogs being alone that long while others will. Most people work and most people have jobs. I really think it boils down to each specific dog and their needs. JMO

They are now leaving for several days and the dogs are left alone - some inside some outside. I just don't know when its stupid and when its cruel. (don't beat me up I know there are times pets are left longer then they should be cause people have to work, have a flat tire, or some other unexpected crisis)
Seems mean to me.. and its giving me a headache, barking, yeah, I have to go start learning how to change laws.. No I am not looking to adopt a pet, I have my wild critters. They know how to fend for themselves.
The lastest critters are 2 black bear.

As you point out, there may be some emergencies. The last month of my Mom's life, my one remaining dog spent much time alone, day and night as I worked and visitied hospice after work. I took Honey with me often though, but she still suffered being alone too much. That was out of necessity! And it was sad and neglectful! I didn't have any help.
To leave dogs unattended for a weekend, while the owner is away doing whatever, I think is "stupid and cruel."
I had a neighbor that left a "yard" dog alone all summer. If I didn't go over there every day to feed and spend time with him, he would have been so lonely. I saw depression in him as it was. NOT FAIR! If you can't take proper care of an animal, don't have them. And dogs to be guard dogs and left unattended, only to be fed and watered, UNFAIR...they need more! In Canada, you would be reported and likely the dog would be seized if you left a dog outside unattended for a weekend. Neighbors will call and report it and animal investigation officers would pay a visit. IF it's not checked how would we know if the dogs have been abandoned on a permanent basis? If not...the owners would be told what's appropriate and get or the dogs would be removed if they didn't change how they were looking after them. Unfortunately, in this economy more and more people are just leaving their animals behind. Very sad. If it were me...I'd report it to the local humane society. At the very least it will make the owners more responsiblem hopefully! I have no tolerance for this. It's the animals who suffer and if you can't be responsible pet owners, you shouldn't have pets, imho.

Not having children, my pets were always my children. I often didn't know how I would take care of them, their vet bills especially, but I always did. And we were always together until death did we part.
Well, like many, I lost my job, my home, and my retirement in the U.s. and moved to Panama in order to survive myself, and what do I find here, not two weeks after arriving, a "starved street dog" and I promised her I would take care of her. The vet said she has tick fever and a swollen spleen. We're praying for the best. Private Reply to Barbara Haynes | | |
