One of our newest Ryzers and a member of this network, Elaine Marie of Spirit Lake, was actually on board for this idea before you had even put the site online, Sherry. Are you surprised?

I hope that from this effort we get more Lake County, CA folks on Ryze like Elaine Marie and more Ryzers collaborating with each other to make amazing things happen for communities around the world. All we have to do is plan the marketing effort and work the plan.

Anyone who goes to that budURL can see we have a good design. All that remains is the Caring and Connecting. I am confident we have the folks to make that MAGIC happen. And, should you not be one of the 12 chosen, don't worry. I feel there will be other opportunities right around the corner...maybe even in New York City.

Hiya Sherry and Lamar.

Is this a blatant AD? I'd say YES! BUT, I think it's one
that can benefit all members with businesses and we know
it's not a scam, eh?

So, it will stand...

FYI Note:
The page Sherry created has the text cut off and the 100
looks like 10 and more details are not viewable.

I'd like to sign up for the top left ad pane but the page
also does not have a sign up space.

Count me in and send me a PM with details!

ooops, sorry, I guess I did not think of it as an ad as Lamar and I are doing this as a effort to connect Ryzers and help them market. Just want to clarify that this is not a money maker for us...just our part to provide some different marketing for us all!

Sherry,

I think it is important to point out that Elaine Marie of the Spirit Lake Bed & Breakfast here in Lower Lake, CA joined Ryze about the same time that she signed on for your dry eraser to-do-list board promotion. Believe it or not, your promotion has already brought at least one new member to Ryze before the board was even created. On Oct. 4th there is going to be a social media brunch/workshop at the Ting's Thai Kitchen Restaurant in the Hardesters Shopping Center of Hidden Valley Lake, CA. While I may not have the physical boards by that time, be sure to send me a photo of the actual board. I want to show it off at this workshop. I also ask that you publish it here on Ryze. People need to see what is actually being accomplished here and figure out for themselves the potential value of such a tool for their business. After all, I do believe with continued involvement from passionate people such a process can easily be duplicated all over the world.

Scott,

I think that is a great idea. From what I understand - this opportunity is open to any Ryze business - be it commercial or nonprofit. But, it is first-come/first-serve. If you snooze, you lose.

Keep in mind there are only 12 spaces available. One hundred dry eraser boards are being created. Those boards will be good for years. Those boards will come with dry markers. So, they will all be "good to go" right out of the "goodie bag."

Could something like this be done where you live - New York City by Ryzers? Of course. This is not just something that is designed to work in rural Northern California. Listen, if it can work where I live, I think it can work just about anywhere.

I would like to know if anyone is having trouble accessing this link - RyzeUplift. Now, that link is a budURL. It's actually an alternative link to the original. I use Firefox as my browser. I have no trouble accessing that link. However, I have heard from one other person who also uses Firefox tell me she cannot access that link. This I do not understand. How can two people using the same browser not access a web address? If one can access using a particular browser, should everyone else using the same browser be able to access the site? Is there anyone on this network who cannot access that web address?

Please advise.

To me this opportunity is just another advertising medium, meaning that it needs to be evaluated like any other medium. Does it fit my target market? Will it be seen by the right people, at the right time, and the right number of times?

For my business it doesn't have the sort of reach I need. Yes, it will be seen multiple times by 100 people, but are they the right people for me?

I also wind up comparing it to some placemat advertising I'm doing. The placemats also only have spaces for 12 businesses, and those ads are around the periphery of information that the end user in primarily interested in. However, in the case of placemats I get 15,000 exposures for $189, which compares quite favorably to 100 exposures for $25. 79 exposures per dollar vs. 4 per dollar.

My business depends more on breadth than depth of exposure. Getting my message in front of more eyeballs is more important than repeated exposure to a limited number of people. While this opportunity is a good one, it's not appropriate for my business.

Hey Kurt: .... I always liked place mat advertising because you have a captive audience and your ad is likely to be studied rather than skimmed over.

I can see these ads being a great list building tool. .... How is this vehicle working for you?

Would you care to share your costs, for this medium, with us?

FWIW ... I once did a promo using shirt cardboards for Laundry Operators. .... Had to discontinue because the ink was transferring to the shirts.

IMO the number 100 is too limiting.
From personal experience over the years I've fund that to get results I need to be up in the thousands and tens of thousands of views.

I think the white board needs a gimmick, something to make it stand out above the rest.
Perhaps a replaceable insert?

I also think that 100 is too small a sampling especially in another part of the world, unless the recipients are highly targeted to my business.

An similar sized ad in a small topical mag in Toronto with a circulation of 4000 is $7 and an ad here in a small coffee news is $50 for a circulation of 2500. I would probably estimate the readership at 4 or more times that amount as it is left in places people wait as well as coffee shop type places. http://www.ebys.com/sept2008%20good%20copy.pdf

The 100, while small, works great for local.
But you need to give them a reason for using it. Perhaps you can work with the local High School to produce one. It could have all teeh school holidays and important numbers. Not sure how many students are in your school, but just think of all the good you could do.

Teddy,

I've found that placemats in restaurants located close to my shop work well for brand awareness. Trying to put a coupon in one, on the other hand, is rather useless. People just aren't interested in ruining a nice, neat place setting.

Cost, as mentioned above, is 15,000 for $189. That's about six to nine months worth of exposure in the restaurants I've been working with.

I think it's good to get a corner spot - it sort of makes you an "anchor tenant". It's also more likely to be visible even when dishes are sitting on top.

Also, be persuasive rather than informative. An eye-grabbing graphic and headline, your business name, and address and phone number is about all you want. Maybe an easy-to-remember offer (which, if it's unique, will also help you track the ad).

Note that your printing options will probably be limited. My placemats have all been one color plus a spot color, with the colors chosen by the printer or the restaurant owner.

I know they are working because I've had people mention seeing them to me. I haven't put any unique offers on them to track them.

Guys,

Keep in mind that numerous things are happening here...and they are connected.

1) The Ryze Network is reaching out to Lake County, CA via the Coyote Valley Community Plaza Thursday Market in October. Ryze is doing it with those 100 to-do-list boards.

2) At the same place where the "goodie bags" are being handed out, I will be collecting business cards to send individuals invitations to the Ryze Business Network and the MATH Ning Network (for those who live in South Lake County).

3) Susanne LaFaver, professor of Public Relations for Golden State University, has put out a press release about my upcoming Social Media Workshop and Brunch where mover and shakers from all over the county are going to be introduced to the online world of social media by me. Ryze will be included in my presentation.

4) Gov. Schwarzenegger's Office of Research and Development is allowing me to help create buzz for the upcoming Second Small Business and Entrepreneurship Conference.

5) I am a small business writer for the San Francisco Examiner. All that is happening with this campaign is not going to just "come and go." It is going to be used to build greater things.

Granted, those 100 to-do-list boards do not seem like much. But, I see them as breathing "new life" into Lake County, CA. I was at a meeting just today where someone from the county redevelopment agency was explaining how the process of redevelopment works. It is quite complex. But, it begins with feedback from a "caring community." My area of Lake County has yet to become a "caring community." My hope is that what Sherry Lynn Simoes and the 12 advertisers demonstrate by reaching out will give local residents a clue as to how they can make life in Lake County more prosperous.

I want to add that what Ryzers can do with goodie bag inserts in a shopping plaza in Hidden Valley Lake, CA can easily be duplicated elsewhere - in other states or nations. It simply takes caring people willing to work together to make the magic happen. I highly encourage folks do things like this elsewhere. It does not have to be goodie bags. There are many ways in which mutual collaborative effects can be implemented. I encourage some brain-storming be done with a small group of people over a Skype conference. I believe you can do a Skype conference with as many as nine people. But, I personally think a group of four or five is quite enough. That is what I consider to be a more manageable. I call it a "cluster."

Hello Folks.

I like to add a little adventure (gambling) to my
advertising agenda every now and then. SO, I'm in for
two ADS on the Sherry/Lamar wagon for the dry-erase boards.

Sure, I advertise at plenty of other places and yes
for views, 100 is quite low. But who knows? You
truly never know where a client may come from, now do you?

I agree that for Kurt this would make no sense as he has a
brick and mortar shop. But for those of us who make our
living on the internet, I truly love goodie bags going out
in real places with my ADS.

I can remember 250 cookbooks from quite a few years ago
(circa 2000), with a full page ad for one of my online
shops that were sold in Alabama. I STILL get calls off
those cookbook ADS! Amazing, don't 'cha think?

$50.00 either way will not break my advertising budget,
period. I've gladly handed it over to two folks I know to
be hard working, honest and of course, Ryze Friends.

Working together is the best way to get things done.

Eileen,

I am in total agreement with you here. It makes no sense for a brick-and-mortar retail store that is not located in Lake County, CA to advertise on those to-do-list boards. But, for a business which "lives and breathes" on the Internet - this is ideal!

We currently have a wide range of folks already involved - from a resort, to a Ning network, to a web designer. Nothing quite like this has ever even been attempted in this county. And, that makes it special. That makes it newsworthy. And, since I happen to write for the San Francisco Examiner, I can personally see to it that it becomes newsworthy. Would you like to get news about your business in the San Francisco Bay Area? Well, Sherry Simoes and I are giving 12 Ryzers that opportunity in an advertising vehicle that lasts a lot longer than any advertising display ad ever could - 100 dry eraser to-do-list boards. Each board has a magnetic backing so it fits nicely on the front of a refrigerator. On Sunday, Oct. 4th, I am to be the keynote speaker at a workshop and brunch on social media in the new economy. Do you think I am going to mention what the Ryze Business Network is planning for my community? You better believe I will.

Ryzers have been reaching out to this community for FIVE LONG YEARS. However, there has never been a BIG PUSH where Ryzers left something behind in the community - with the exception of Althea Garner's vinyl tote bags - that the locals could actually use. But, with these to-do-list boards, not one but many advertiser are going to leave something behind of value to the local residents here. Will the residents here figure the campaign out and desire to get involved with Ryze? I think this time they will. And, here is why:

There has never been a physical training facility wherein the local public could receive hands-on training with regard to social media. But now, the Hidden Valley Food Mart has taken stepped up to the plate. This place looks like an ordinary convenience store that's located just off a major state highway. But, it's much more. How many convenience stores do you know employ a chef? You can stop off at this convenience store, go into a dining area, sit down and eat a thick steak - prepared by a chef. Amazing but true.

Ting's Thai Kitchen and the Hidden Valley Food Mart are engaging in mutual collaboration to help each other out. I want the Ryze community to have the same mindset toward helping each other out that these two restaurants have. See it as a win/win situation when you collaborate. Think "better together." It really does work...when you are willing to CARE, CONNECT...and have a GOOD DESIGN. I am convinced this time a GOOD DESIGN has been created.

For those Ryzers who have a business that "lives and breathes" on the Internet, this promotion is meant for you. Please do not pass up this historic opportunity. Help make historic marketing magic happen for your business and Lake County, CA simultaneously. Go to Ryze Uplift and sign up for one of those remaining display ad spaces on that magnetic to-do-list board.

Elaine Marie

Hi,

This is Elaine Marie of Spirit Lake in Lower Lake, CA. I just wanted to say I support what Ryzers are doing here with these to-do-list boards. I believe in this "mutual collaboration" stuff. It really does seem like a wonderful idea. I not only preside over a beautiful AND QUIET lake here in Northern California, but a real nice rental property in Hawaii. If any of you would like to take a look, go to www.oceanspiritvacationrental.com.

Is anyone here able to help me spread my message about a bed & breakfast that wants folks who want to "get away from the rat race" rather than bring it with them? I am pretty picky about what I want. No motorized boats on the lake. No large crowds. Instead, I want to preserve the wonder of nature that surrounds this wonderful place. But, I do want customers in some group coming. It is kind of a catch-22 situation. Any suggestions here on Ryze?

Hi Elaine!

Welcome to Ryze and ABHP too!

Wow, beautiful pictures, I'd like to see more though...
Not that I could get to Hawaii anytime soon, but more
visual could help me dream about it, you know?

I'm glad you will have some ads on the dry-erase board too.
For someone who's local, in your area, this is a GREAT idea
to put your information out there in a permanent way.

If you need help with your Ryze page or anything
else "Ryze" (or not ryze, for that matter) I'm only an

I am so glad you find value in what we are doing. Thanks for the comment Elaine Marie. I am excited about the opportunity to pull Ryze members together and be able to offer this.

I hope we can do this on a regular basis for events Ryze members are having across the globe! I feel it gives them something of value to give away as well as helping to promote their fellow Ryze members!

I totally agree on Eileen's comment as about never knowing where your business will come from. This small but mighty promotion could bring you one, two or many new clients...for $25 I strongly believe it will benefit anyone who does business online.

Only 3 spots are left. Anyone up for the taking?

Sherry,

It is now down to two available spaces on that to-do-list board from three. At the close of October 1st, whatever the total number of ad spaces, that is what we will go forward with for those boards. I would much prefer all 12 slots be filled.

A local Hidden Valley Lake, CA convenience store that is about to become a Wi-Fi hot spot has decided to join the throng of Ryzers participating. I have no doubt that these folks will become Ryzers once they get their wireless Internet access up-and-running. On Thursday they are actually to get their AT&T/Yahoo DSL model delivered to them. Cable was their first choice. There is actually a cable box right outside the convenience store on a telephone pole. But, neither one of the cable companies they contacted bothered to follow-up with them. However, it was a very different story with AT&T/Yahoo. The AT&T router was shipped out with the initial phone call.

Two cable companies lost out on a good customer. All they had to do was diligently return a phone call. But,they didn't and AT&T/Yahoo did. I have heard that in some parts of the country, DSL is faster than cable. I wonder if that is true where I live?
