...Raving Insomniac... | | What’s up, Sid? Don’t you recognize this city of Mumbai, so what if it has virtually always been Bombay, earning all its name, fame and even shame being only Bombay! If you woke up early, it could probably be because of the nightmare you saw in the city of “Mollywood” instead of Bollywood, did you?
Whatever the case may be, I appreciate the guts of K Jo, who was real quick to apologize. He can well be criticised for bowing to the Raj (not as in noun). If anything, he has saved Bombay, oops Mumbai from all the ruckus and riots that Raj & co would have created. Apparently, it makes business sense too from the Box Office perspective. Some may argue that a behind the curtain deal was struck to earn publicity for the movie. But wonder what, a simple apology note silenced all guns trained towards Bombay (in literal sense). Not bad at all!
So Sid, now that you are awake, don’t be surprised next time you come across a song “ye hai Mumbai meri jaan”
Meanwhile, someone probably has already started making another movie, “Wake Up, Raj”

Siddhartha Rathi | | Well I really don't understand why people have problem calling Bombay as Mumbai... All over world the name change have taken place... Its same here we have also changed our name... Why everyone is so annoyed with the fact??
Some time back we used to speak English English but now we speak American English but we don't have problem in that but calling Mumbai we have loads of problem.. In fact in many of the families the new "Bahu's" name is also changed once she comes to her husbands’ house... No one objects on that and everyone gleefully accept is as "Sasural walo ka Haq hai"... We change so many things in life… We even change our nature over the period of time... And no one complains about it... So why not we take this as one of our nature changes and accepts it...
As for people like Raj Thakrey who are enforcing this on us illegally is because we are not ready to accept this change... And they are just capitalising on our mistakes... So I will say more then these guys we are responsible for all these illegal enforcement.

Siddhartha Rathi | | Just to add... I at times suggest my foreigner partners to call me Sid instead of Siddhartha as they really make mess of my name... So I accept my name change but I can't accept my city's name change... Private Reply to Siddhartha Rathi |

susmita dasgupta | | No Sid, there is a huge politics over names. Bombay is cosmopoliton, pan Indian and has a trajectory of growth which is not inclusive of the local Marathis. The local Marathis wish to reclaim this city and make it work in a manner that they dominate over every aspect. Mumbai is a desire of the Marathi Manoos to do that. Bombay means a different city in which the locals have little say.
You are Sidhharth. The election ID, the passport, the headmaster, the boss, the boardroom directors do not call you Sid; You are then Sidhharth, formal, professional, public, civil and distant. When you are Sid, you are a buddy, a relative, a chum - in short, one can talk to you informally. Hence different names mean different things. There is so much in a name !!! Hemal Patel | | RAJ & Co started shouting at Bombay-Mumbai things against K Jo.. But, they don't have anything to say for RAP(ed) version of Hanuman Chalisa in "Wanted" of Salman Khan... .. I really recall one dialogue of Big B in HUM.. "sab mile hue he"...

Siddhartha Rathi | | Hi Susmita,
Across the world name changes are done for local sentiments only Pecking was made Beijing not for anyone else sentiment but for local public sentiment. Only difference is India we are 30 countries in 1 country in reality and thats why we make this as marathi manoos affair.
Madras was changed to Chennai, Calcutta was made Kolkata and Bangalore was made Bangaluru none of these changes had to with any country wide sentiments. All changes was for to make it sound how it is in local language and not some language which is imposed on us.
So let's not make this a marathi manoos issue or trying to hog the city by local marathi's. Else every name change in country will fall in that bracket.
And I agree 110% that most of it is done for political milage. But the day we stop fighting against such issues automatically the political mileage gained by such acts will reduce to zero. When we start a confrontation the winners are political parties who are always ready to take the benefits of such fights.

susmita dasgupta | | Siddharth, thats the real point, the local claims over national cities. Such contests will remain until and unless the local can become the national or even the global. Oxford is a locality, but it is global, no one calls it York. Similarly we go and hunt out the villages of Udipi and Chettinad, for these localities are global. Private Reply to susmita dasgupta |

...Raving Insomniac... | | If Obama can get a Nobel prize and Bush can be nominated, then any tom, dick and Raj can get it anytime ;-)
Going back to the problem of "why cant we call it Mumbai", we do... but after watching "Wake Up Sid", there was hardly any Bombay worth objecting... Or may be as someone said, MNS wasnt even there in "Bombay" ! Private Reply to ...Raving Insomniac... |
