I’m paying rent and being told what to do, it was too much to bear. I found a little one bedroom apartment and left the next week. I gave no one my new address and enjoyed not having any surprise guests. I was determined to stay away from Fletcher. The last thing I needed was to get involved with him again.
He called one day while Phil was on vacation and after being left on hold for 15 minutes, he decided to stop by. Nancy encouraged me to go to lunch but nothing more.
“Hey, it’s a free meal. What’s wrong with that?”
“Nothing, Nancy but whenever I’m around him, I seem to end up pregnant. I really need to stay away from him. He makes me crazy and sets my body into overdrive. I see him and think about sex. Never mind the fact that I haven’t had any in a year. So free food really isn’t worth it.”
I turn around from my conversation to find Fletcher standing behind me smiling. Nancy had never met him so I introduced them. She smiled at me.
“I can see the source of your problem. Mr. Garter, it’s a good thing I’m a married woman.”
“Nancy, I’m going to call your husband on you.” I hissed.
“Don’t worry, I’m going to call him myself so I can make sure he knows I’m wearing him out tonight. Girl, that’s a problem on two legs right there. Look at him smiling that ladykiller smile while thinking of all the things he’d like to do to you. You’re right, lunch isn’t worth it!” I laughed and went back to my desk.
“So you’re scare to go out with me?” he asked amused.
“I never said I was scared. I’m not scared, just being cautious and don’t think you can come on in here trying to get back on my good side. It’s not going to happen so give it up.”
“I can’t.”
“Sure you can. Just keep trying harder.”
“Gazelle, I want to see you.”
“Really, well the people in h-ll want ice water and you see what wanting has gotten them.” I smile. “You will excuse me while I get back to work. Bye now.”
He left and Nancy came out of her office to watch him leave.
“Gazelle, I’d leave my husband for that one. He is too fine and –“
“Trust me Nancy, he’s trouble. He’s married too.”
“Dang it! Why are all the good looking ones married? So was he married when you met him?”
“Unfortunately, yes but I didn’t find out until I was already pregnant with Sam. Now that Tiffany’s here, I’m doing my best to stay away from him. It seems whenever he and I get in a room alone and turn out the lights, I get pregnant. He isn’t going to leave his wife and I won’t share him with her. I’m always the one alone on the holidays and he’s always the one who’s missing. He’s broken my heart once already and I’m not strong enough for another time.” Nancy handed me a tissue because I was crying and didn’t even realize it.
