charu hasan | | I wrote this in the writer's forum one month back on 11th Sept. 39 people have viewed it in the writers forum full of poets and not one made a comment. I placing it in CNK
If one wants to make living as writer he needs a minimum of 1000 dollars a month and probably can write one book a year. That would be a royalty of 12000 dollars received by the writer. If the book is sold at 5 dollars a copy the retail seller’s commission could be 20% of the gross. Transport cost internationally would be 20%. Printing cost could be 20% the publishers take would be 30%. A writer if popular and successful would get 10%. Interests and advertisements are extra.
Now let us come back from the other end. If hundred thousand copies are sold in its first edition the gross is five hundred thousand dollars. The end share of the writer would be fifty thousand. To sell hundred thousand copies you have to have two hundred thousand printed bound and transported so that half the number of copies sent to the dealers should be available in the shops exhibited for sale for the next four years. The investment could be five hundred thousand dollars. The interest on investment for the first year could be 16.000$ minimum bank rates. You have 16000 dollars deficit at the end of the first year. Next half a million dollars will leave you 84000 dollars which should come with in seven months of the publication. If that happens your book may be entered for Booker and other prizes. You need two hundred thousand readers to get interested in reading your book.
20 years back a publisher asked me to write a book in my native language. I was never known as a writer. I was just a lawyer turned actor. His reasoning was that 700 copies would be bought by the libraries and another three hundred he can sell with my picture in the cover page. 1000 was his breakeven point. I asked him “ How about my next book?” He smiled without an answer. I declined his offer for I had too much reputation to lose.
I learnt that a London Publisher demanded 1000 pounds from George Bernard Shaw for his first book. India is no different. Private Reply to charu hasan |

Writing in Ryze network is a pastime. Salmon Rushdie and Taslima nasreen are lesser writers who know how to do better. Private Reply to charu hasan |

padmanabhan ramasubban | | Charu,
What you write is understandble to all in ryze except for translation if the post is in tamizh.
You are now at a stage in life you can afford to write whatever you want and need not seek approval for same. Private Reply to padmanabhan ramasubban |

charu hasan | | PR You dont have to agree out of respect for age. Salmon Rushdie is glorified for he pleases all anti mulsims. I went all the way to UK to be within law to read Satanic verses. It is terrible book. Intended to insult not only islam, but also Amitab, Rekha and Mohamed. Written by a man who never know about Fatima who was twice her husband's age. Samita Bondal | | would it be possible that Rushdie bribed Khomeni to issue the fatwa so that the book would sell??? because otherwise for the content i seriously doubt anyone would have bought it. Private Reply to Samita Bondal |
