I just came from a business mixer by the local business association here in Northern California. The turnout was not good. While there was plenty of free food, there was nothing else really to it. No program at all. Just small talk. Having lived in Atlanta, I know for a fact that some places actually provide a program for their attendees and charge a fee. Here where I am, there is no fee to attend and plenty of free food, but almost no people. If you have a good crowd for your mixers, please tell me what you do that might benefit the local folks here to emulate. We need all the help we can get.

Singapore Sling mixers are light-hearted. The set up is casual, informal. We believe in a smile on the face, a "hi" and a "hello", getting to know people first and if the chemistry is right, the dollar may be yours for the taking. We do not call them business networking mixers as such. There is no set agenda unless we have something planned such as talks, once in a while. If we have many members attending for the first time, we do a round of self introductions.
The ambience is usually a cafe or a pub. There is no free food, people pay for what they consume.
When it comes to business networking events, people are spoilt for choice. We used to have attendance in the thirties on an average, which has now dropped considerably. Many have come and gone, people in search of that all illusive instant dollar. But then, not every seller has a buyer and vice versa.
Thanks for asking.

Are your mixers a monthly, quarterly or semi-annual affair? Does it move around so far as the host is concerned? Or, is it usually held at the same place?
What we have here in Northern California is monthly and the host changes every month. So, the location also changes monthly. Some mixers may have a little structure to them. Most have no structure at all, which I think is sad. Why? Because the lack of structure sends a non-verbal message that you really do not care whether folks show up or not. And, guess what often happens? Folks don't show up for for future mixers due to prior disappointments.
Maybe I am mistaken, but I feel there is a certain degree of skill and planning that goes into a good mixer. When a good mixer happens, it is no accident. It is the result of a well-planned design. I believe a good mixer should be anticipated if it has been well-planned.
What does your experience there in Singapore tell you?

You've been here long enough to know that mixers at SingSling are a monthly affair.
We used to have different hosts in the past, but finding one to take the lead every month has been tough. Singaporeans live a stressful life and an average Singaporean works from 8am to 8pm. We now have a committee of a few die-hard supporters which makes a joint decision on the theme, venue, etc.
I disagree with you on the skill and structure factor as far as we are concerned. Read my earlier reply again and you will understand where we come from.
