The United States is now driven by an information and service economy. Over the past decade, Fortune 500 companies have laid off 4.4 million workers while smaller companies steadily continue to reduce their work forces. As companies continue to downsize and re-organize, many professionals will seek out and search for new ways to take control of their careers. People used to believe that their livelihood depended on living in big cities near big corporations. Tim Flowers | | I certainly agree that owning your own business is the way to go for many people, however, a couple of points:
- Some people DO get rich working for others. Wall Street investment firms have created many, many millionaires. And the presidents of most major corporations make more in one year than most small business owners make in a lifetime.
- Owning a business gives you more control over your life, but it doesn't necessarily mean more security. Businesses fail, taking homes, cars, and marriages with them.
- You may not get rich owning a business, so be sure you're doing something you love even if the profits are minimal.
As Chuck said, preparation is critical. Know what you're getting into before taking a leap. Don't ignore the potential problems while focusing on your dream.
And something that's just as important: get a second opinion and multiple bids on everything! When I launched my first big business, I was given bad advice from relatives, an attorney, and an accountant. Had I ignored their advice or followed someone else's advice, I would have been much better off! Can't go back and fix it now, though.
