Looking for Ebay HelpViews: 186
Oct 20, 2009 9:47 pmLooking for Ebay Help#

Kurt Schweitzer
I'm just getting started selling items on Ebay. I've purchased a few things in the past, but this is my first foray into online auctions.

I've gone as far as getting the Ebay account set up and linked to my PayPal account. I haven't yet hooked into my online merchant account for credit card processing, but since PayPal now takes care of that it shouldn't be too big an issue.

I guess I'm getting close to the point of actually putting some items up and seeing what happens. I've had really poor luck selling stuff online in the past, so I'm looking for any guidance that will help me change that.

The initial items will probably be accessories like jackets, gloves, and sunglasses.

If you are willing to give me some one-on-one assistance, please PM me.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks to Sandra Libby and Scott Wolpow for getting back to me and offering assistance!

After setting up my account I wound up downloading Turbo Lister, which is a free tool offered by eBay to create and manage listings. From my perspective it has two uses: a) an editor for creating listings, and b) the ability to use a listing as a template for creating more.

After I put up my first auction (a Fieldsheer Cool Cruise Motorcycle Jacket) I was struck by a thought which I suspect is the biggest difference between "Power Sellers" and everybody else:

If you want to make $1000 on eBay you need to put up at least $1000 worth of auctions. (Duh!)

What this means to me is that I need to put up a LOT of auctions. Initially I was thinking one a day, but with things like the jackets selling for around $50 that would only add up to $1500 a month (and I'd run out of jackets well before the end of the month!)

By the way, if I sell out all my jackets at that price and have to restock I wind up LOSING money.

Anyway, my goals right now are 1) bring in some cash right now, and 2) learn how to use eBay efficiently and profitably. So I'm putting up listings and seeing what happens! Hopefully I'll learn how to use eBay profitably before I run out of inventory to sell!

Any comments?

You mean Turbocrapper, it really is garbage. Use file exchange.
Host your images elsewhere. Look at my eBay pages for terms
stores.ebay.com/discountjewelry

I am working on my own tools to list on eBay, Amazon etc

Scott,

I'm impressed! It looks like you've got quite an operation going there!

I looked into File Exchange, but they require you to have an average of 50 or more active listings per month for the last two months before you can download it. I ain't there yet!

At this point I have two items listed. They are the same product (Fieldsheer Cool Cruise Motorcycle Jackets) in different sizes. The listings are nearly identical except for the formatting of the Terms and Conditions after the product descriptions.

Each time I put up another one I learn a little bit more and tweak the listing a bit. My next thing to look into is putting a sign-up for my newsletter into my listings. I see that eBay has something, but I really want to connect back to my Constant Contact list.

Learning and doing - that's what I've got to do. At least it beats twiddling my thumbs while waiting for customers to walk into the store!

With eBay power sellers, it's been my knowledge that this is practically all these folks do all day long, week in and week out. Or they have a staff person devoted to just doing listings and managing auctions/sales, and shipping.

I have limited experience in using eBay since I'm really only a casual purchaser.

I do agree that Turbolister can be a detriment in some ways. eBay (last time I checked) does have the ability to allow you to clone a listing and help save some time, with respect to finding the item's category, setting a template, etc.

I don't know if it's wise to jump right in and dump out a ton of listings though, until you've tested the ability of an item to sell well. I'm sure you know this already, though. eBay can rob you just with listing fees and such, so if you list a bunch of stuff that doesn't sell the listing fees still cost ya.

I agree with Scott about hosting your own images, but make sure it's at a hosting account with a good amount of bandwidth, so you don't get socked with overage charges. Then again, many of the cheaper hosting services have tons of it allotted for each account (so they say).

Good luck, Kurt!

You can not have any third party links on your site.
You can export your list from eBay and can send anything in teh newsltter you want. At least at last look.

They will allow you to use flat file after you have had have been selling for a while.

I used to post 500 items at a time. I had built tools on a proprietary system. When I was stopped using I lost my tools. BTW Lamar that is a lesson for you.

I have built the first generation data masaager. I can take any csv, read it then remap and augment the fields. I then take taht data and export it to the format specified by the site, be it eBay etc.

Next step is to get it out of alpha and into beta. Next step is to use API's to post, tehn open it up to the public. .
This weekend I am posting, manually the first of my diamond jewelry

BJ,

What a lot of people don't seem to realize is that using eBay is like opening another brick & mortar store.

I've been browsing around some of the eBay discussion boards. One of the common complaints is that the fees are "too high".

I agree that the PayPal fees are pretty high. PayPal charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. I compare that to my merchant account fees of 1.6% + $0.25 per transaction. I expect to use PayPal while I get experience with eBay, and then switch over to using my own merchant account as much as possible.

The eBay fees themselves, however, are comparable to what I might expect with a B&M shop. eBay charges up to 12% "Final Value Fee" on all sales (percentage varies with listing category). Then there are additional listing fees - for additional images, bold listing, "featured" listing, etc. - that are charged for things to make your item stand out from the crowd. If you're not careful you can wind up not making any profit on a sale just because of the fees!

Compare those to the cost of renting a storefront, displaying your merchandise, and advertising to get people in the door. As an owner of a retail business I know how quickly those costs can drain my wallet.

Bottom line is that selling stuff on eBay is like running a mail order business. You have to design the ads, process the orders, pack and ship the merchandise, purchase and manage inventory, and provide customer service. You also need to manage the books and try to make a profit.

Hopefully I can learn to do this well enough, and fast enough, to have a profitable Christmas season!

I figure eBay [PayPal] cut is 15%. I also figure another percent depending on the sale price. It costs beteen 5 to 25 cents per listing, so on low priced and low margin items you an extra percent.

I also have clients who use eBay just to get names for their mailing list. If they break even, they are ahead of the game.

Happy Saturday Folks.

This has been a very informative thread. I've been
a "power" buyer (heh) at eBay but not a seller. Since I
am now, finally getting out of the retail business (for the
most part) of selling imported goods, I will have some left
over inventory to get rid of, and eBay or some other
auction site might be the ticket for this very thing.

Either that or another huge garage sale.

Thanks folks for all your invaluable information!

I spent most of yesterday (when I wasn't tweeting my son's football game) researching eBay selling strategies. As usual on the Web, not all the advice was in agreement.

In this document (http://www.tinaja.com/glib/moreebay.pdf) I came across something very thought provoking:

The claim is that the MINIMUM PROFITABLE SELLING PRICE on eBay is $19,83,

Furthermore, if you expect to have a full-time income from eBay sales you need to be running at least 70 auctions ALL THE TIME.

If you go through his analysis you'll see the following assumptions:

1) Full-time income is $25,000 a year.
2) Average PROFIT on a sale is $10.
3) Closure rate (auction ends with a sale) is 70%.

$25,000 a year is $500 a week is $100 a day.

$100 a day at $10 profit per sale is 10 sales a day.

Two days a week your auctions close without sales. (That's the 70% closure rate. In reality those closes will be distributed across the week.)

Auctions are typically seven-day listings.

In order to have ten sales a day, every day, you thus need to have 70 auctions running every day.

Obviously you can improve things by selling more profitable items. For example, you could achieve the same income on only ONE sale a day if that sale nets you $100 profit.

This has gotten me thinking about my brick-and-mortar store. Right now the success of my business rides on vehicle sales. Not far behind is my service business. Ticket sizes in each case are large enough that I can make a large dollar profit on smaller margin sales.

Ebay sales seem to be mostly small dollar sales. In order to be profitable they MUST have high mark-ups.

Things to think about!

That is old data. Most money is from a mix of Buy It Now auctions and store. The Nuy iT Now Auction style is what pushes the traffic to your store. Auctions have one major drawback. A person has to be looking for that item wneh it is being sold. On the plus side it gets more exposure in the results.

So Scott, I noticed you have a pretty substantial eBay store. What mix of store vs. auction sales do you get?

I actually had an online catalog as part of my website for quite a while. I took it down over the summer because it wasn't generating enough sales to justify its existence. The one advantage I see to having an eBay store is the ability to use auctions to promote the store.

Speaking of promoting the store, setting up eBay is a lot like setting up a whole other website! I just finished creating the "about me" page (a real challenge to figure out how to find the form!)

http://members.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=uvscooters

I just used their form with minimal HTML so I would have something there. I'm toying with the idea of placing my eBay policies (shipping, returns, etc.) there, or creating a separate page on my website for them, as opposed to filling up my listings with repeated "terms and conditions". Recommendations?

Anyway, if I'm going to have 70 things for sale this week I'd better get cracking! I'm looking at three cases of sunglasses to start with. Selling them will a) get them out of here, b) give me some experience with the selling side of eBay, c) get my feedback count up, and d) push me farther along the learning curve. I probably WON'T make any money on them. Oh well!

I used to have 15,000 to 25,000 items posted on Ebay. Almsot all were in the store, but taht was a few years ago. Then they raised the store listing fee quite a bit. I am going list items this month for the holiday season. In fact I amy get the first items up today. Have to work on my template. I used to have automated tools and I am again building them.

As to mix, I will let you know. I alos will be posting to my other id kloozsales.

More and more this reminds me of building a website. I prepared 23 auctions today. I'm going to put them up tomorrow afternoon so that they close the following Monday afternoon.

Paying attention to the closing day/time is supposed to be important. Apparently there are people who "snipe" auctions - place their bids at the last possible second so that nobody knows about their interest until its too late to outbid them.

Personally I use the "single bid" buying strategy. I decide how much I'm willing to pay for something, and bid that amount. Or use the "Buy It Now" option if it's available.

Ebay will take transform my bid into the LOWEST amount that wins the auction. If someone comes in later and bids higher (but still below my maximum bid) eBay will automatically crank my bid up until it just barely wins the auction.

That system works for me.

As for the day/time, supposedly eBay is busiest on Sunday evenings and Monday lunchtimes. An auction that closes at the end of those periods tends to motivate people into placing bids rather than putting it off. We'll see!

Now I need to figure out how to promote OUTSIDE of eBay so that people will look at and purchase my auctions!

The best time for an autcion to end is 9:00 pm Sunday Easter time. Reason, in CA it is 6:00 so people are home from their Sunday and east coast people tend to do things later in the day.

I decided not to post all my sunglasses yesterday. It turns out that, because my feedback is so low, I am not allowed to post an auction with a "Buy It Now" price, so I decided to hold back my more "expensive" (if $15 is expensive!) auctions until I get enough feedback points to push me over that threshold.

I only need ONE more.

Here are all my active auctions:

http://shop.ebay.com/uvscooters/m.html?_dmd=1&_in_kw=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

(Almost as good as having a store, don't ya think?)

It's a little bit frustrating that nobody has bid on anything. A couple items are being watched, but that's the only indication of any interest I can see. I suspect because of "sniping" I won't find out if there's any real interest until the auctions start to close.

[Sales pitch alert!] Of course, YOU can help me out! Buy one or two pairs of sunglasses and help me boost that feedback number! I'll gladly combine shipping! (I think I can ship six pair as cheaply as one!) [End sales pitch]

Thanks!

T.E.A.M. Mom!
Hi Kurt, I just opened up a page for my dad so he can sell some of his sports memorabilia (mix of everything) and have been researching thru some of the links I have posted over on my 1Stop Bd.

As I have heard a combination of good and bad from both sides (sellers/buyers) the most prevelant complaint is the fees associated with Ebay and how many people seem to be selling the same items (than under pricing other sellers).

I am the type of person who has to disect and thoroughly research everything, so I purchased the "Ebay for Dummies" book (pretty good and easy to understand) and have been skimming thru it every night. I bought it thru a used bk site (for a few $), but you might find it in the local library (that is how I get most of my stuff).

This thread has been very insightful and abit scary too, since I did not get thru reading all the TOS of Ebay yet and am not sure it is a probable venue for my father to take. But, some of his stuff is worth alot of money, authenticated with papers and quite old, so who knows.

As usual, Ryze everyday opens up yet another door for me to explore, so off I go. Have a fantastic day, Patricia

Patricia,

The fees are significant, but I don't believe they are exorbitant. I actually am more concerned about shipping charges than the eBay fees. I'm still exploring my shipping options.

By the way, you can go to http://usps.com and have the Post Office send you FREE shipping boxes for their Flat Rate Priority Mail service. This can be a real cost savings!

I just added another seven items - helmets, in this case. I have about 25 active auctions, and so far they've cost me less than $16. If they all sell at their minimums I'll make about $345. I'm looking at about $50 in after-sale fees.

All stuff that has to be considered.

Hiya Kurt.

I'm taking you at your word. I bid on SIX PAIRS of
sunglasses and am ASSUMING the shipping for all six will be
a total of $5.00. You'll have to figure out how to do that
with ebay. I'll sit and watch. heh.

My total should be around $19.00 (I bid slightly higher
than the $3.00 per pair) and one $5.00 shipping charge.
Right?

Good thing I can use these as Christmas gifts!

Cool! Real activity! I'm so excited!

One of the reasons I started with jackets and sunglasses is I think they'll make better Christmas gifts than carburetors and exhaust pipes. When I get around to building an eBay store I expect it will be stocked mainly with parts, not jackets and glasses.

The items I added today were all helmets. I haven't decided what I'll put up tomorrow.

Thanks again!

Smart move Kurt.

I do try to help all ABHP members with purchases and of
course a little exposure here at ABHP. We also RT at
twitter when we can and it's a viable RT.

The teens (nieces and nephews/grand-nieces and grand-
nephews) who will receive the sunglasses will be thrilled.
I imagine their parents though, will be giving me the evil
eye when asked:

"Mom/Dad can I have a motorcycle (or scooter) to match my
new sunglasses?"

LOL

I almost bid on a couple of jackets too. I think I'll wait
until a little closer to Thanksgiving. I may still bid on
some jackets if you have those up for auction at that
time. Let me know if you list those again later. Sizes are
a factor that I have to figure out.

Thanks Kurt, Scott, Eileen for your help and answers :) Yes I know about the flat rate boxes as I sell Avon from time to time to friends and when needed, I have learned the hard way that shipping via the boxes is cheaper.

As for the fee's, my father said he knew about it, as his friend used to have a baseball store in the area, did alot of private collector shows so forth and sold off most of his inventory on Ebay to open up a batting cage.

We will see how this goes. I haven't gotten to the book, skimmed thru most of it before, just need a refresher. Good luck by the way with your auctions Kurt! I have some yahoo groups for listing auctions, will try to send it over to you when I get them up on my advertising blog.

Thanks to Eileen I'm now able to list items the way I want to - with "Buy It Now" buttons.

As soon as I was able to do that I put up a few more sunglasses, some of the more expensive ones in my inventory. (Expensive being $20 retail.) These have metal frames and feel much more substantial. I'm listing them with both a Starting price and a Buy It Now price. It will be interesting to see what happens with them.

I've gotten different suggestions regarding the use of Starting price, Reserve price, and Buy It Now price which I'm trying to sort through. As I understand it:

Starting price is the minimum initial bid, and is shown to the buyer.

Reserve price is the minimum bid that you will accept, which is NOT shown to the buyer. All the buyer sees is "Reserve Not Met" until a bid meets the Reserve price.

Buy It Now price is an initial bid that, if it's met, will cause the auction to be ended early. Buy It Now is visible to the buyer until someone has placed a bid on the item.

I am confused about how to use these. I'm most comfortable with Buy It Now since that is equivalent to a price tag in a store. Push the Buy It Now button and the deal is done!

Starting price is also understandable. It's equivalent to an auctioneer saying "Who will give me ..." I also understand that once a bid has been placed on an item the Buy It Now button (if one exists) goes away.

What I don't understand is the psychology behind setting Starting prices. Should I start at the price I want to get for the item, an insanely low price, or something in between? What's should the relationship between the Starting price and the Buy It Now price be? (Ebay requires the Buy It Now price be at least 10% greater than the Starting Price, but that's it.)

As for setting a Reserve price, I can see using it for selling something with a substantial cost (like a scooter) but otherwise a Reserve price doesn't make much sense to me.

Any thoughts?

Kurt

It will depend on the item. If it is a high demand item, like a ticket to a sporting event that is sold out, then start at a penny. It will quickly rise market levels. If it is a commdity item with high demand the same holds true. For commodity items with level demand, like Sunglasses, then have a starting bid slightly below what you want which is your buy it now price.
