 Ari Bloch | | Dell??!?
I would IMHO strongly dissagree. The corporate standard has been and will continue to be ThinkPad. I have had a Dell, Compaq and a noname and never looked back after ThinkPad.

Manoj Sethu | | I wud bet on IBM (or is it lenovo now?).... my Thinkpad has worked like a rock-horse for 5 years, and never once crashed, never done any servicing. It has had 2 falls and not given signs of any problems.
Mine's used rugged, fully loaded with graphics, gaming, our softwares, javas, joomlas and apaches, all kinds of junk s/w (but needed at work) and still works well.
Two issues: It takes a good 5 minutes of boot time to start actual work. i put it for boot, and go to bring my cup of morning tea at office :))) Must be bcos of all the junk i have in it.
Also, the screen is 14" and not as bright as the HPs or Dell's.
i was gonna ask this, where do i give it for a decent overhauling/cleaning up?
I want the data safe too! Do i have to burn all data onto disks and then give for a format and physical cleaning? Anyone done this before? What's the procedure & cost? Private Reply to Manoj Sethu |

You can do it yourself at no cost. You have to take backups of all data first. Make sure you have all the software installation CDs. Then you can call the tec. support and they can guide you through the whole process.
I have done it a few times (on my own and with support), its easy.

Aditya Belwal | | I would bet on Thinkpad's anytime. They are built to handle the abuses of daily usage.
Dell , Sony Vaio may look better than the TP's , but that's it, the sony's have a perpetual problem of popping keys from the keyboard.
Fujitsu's are good, but prices are steeper than the Vaio's.
Apple is a good choice for designers and heavy tasks, but then installing app's might pose an issue. Private Reply to Aditya Belwal |

Manoj Sethu | | Thanks Suresh. Installation CDs, have to check it will be among the rubble of 1000s of CDs i have now :)
But apart from disk cleaning etc, I also need physical cleaning, gathered some dirt on keys due to constant usage.
I want a reliable vendor who will do a good job. Private Reply to Manoj Sethu |

Sam .. | | If the purpose is only Multimedia (or large share of work involves multimedia) then Dell Studio or Apple Mac is your best bet.
I would suggest you go to a Dell showroom in their office complex in Domlur (Inner Ring Road. beside EGL) and take a demo. You could do the same with Apple at their store in Forum. Apple has seamless integration with Multimedia apps (which comes inbuilt) and the graphics card (again inbuilt).
Dell initially had a heating issue but that is sorted out now.
The rest of the pack (HP, Lenovo and younameit) is not designed for multimedia application. you CAN run Multimedia apps in it but the wait can be frustrating if you are serious Multimedia user.
Dell's after sales support is the best. Infact its simply superb whilst Apple's is the worst.
cheers Sam

Ajith Samuel | | I would always recommend a lenovo. Most of my friends who shared opinions about DELL were fed up, and disliked that brand somehow. So did i, and went on to choose lenovo. I'm still loving it. Private Reply to Ajith Samuel |
