Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain Omega-3 rich, pharmaceutical grade fish oil supplements (tabs or capsules) in Bangalore and if so, where?

Thanks,
Manoj

I think you do get Cod liver oil capsules at all leading medical stores.

Just check the package vs expiry date b4 buying (ofcourse needs to be done for all medics, but specifically for this).

Manoj,
I presume the Seven Seas changed to Seacod which should be available at most of the medical shops.
It is always safe to go for natural supplements.
Omega3 is available with Amway. You contact any Amway business owners to get it. I can assist you in getting it if required.

Thanks for the responses everyone. It seems that cod liver oil capsules do not give the recommended doses/absorption rates compared to purified fish oil, so I think I need to look at the other suggestions. Sangeetha, any more info if you have would be good. "Olevon" was also suggested.

@ Vijay--I generally prefer to stay away from MLM products--but thanks! :-)

Manoj,I am a nutritionist, and have written public awareness articles and conducted several workshops for Omega 3 capsules launched by Merck.

Both the names I gave you are extracted from fish oil, and are the best supplementary source of Omega 3 as far as I know. (I also use them for myself n my family) I am not aware of Olevon, hence cannot comment.

If you wish for any more info or help, you could ask me. I should be glad to help a fellow ryzer.

Thanks so much Sangeetha. My interest in Omega 3 fish oil supplements is basically after reading about so much recent research indicating great health benefits. I guess these are available OTC? How does one determine dosages? Are there any issues for which one should be careful about or not take them?

Best wishes
Manoj

Yes, Manoj, you are right. The health benefits are quite a lot. They are available OTC. As per dosages, it is generally recommended that you consult a physician. Of course, taking one tablet daily would do no harm.

As a dietician, let me remind you that Omega 3 is present in several types of fish and also in walnuts and several vegetables. Mackerel, sardines, salmon and herring are the richest sources.
But if you are a vegetarian,Walnuts, almonds, pine seeds and flax seeds (alsi) are also good sources, while soy, tofu, broccoli and green leafy vegetables are fairly good sources of omega-3 too.

At least 2 servings of fish in a week, or a handful of walnuts daily give you the reqd amt of Omega 3.

I agree with you Sangeetha...the first choice would be to get all requirements from diet rather than pills. Unfortunately though a non-vegetarian Malayalee, I seem to not have received the fish-eating gene!

Thanks again,
Manoj
