Brian Sutin | | I travel to Shanghai about twice a year, and the semiannual problem is always what gifts from America to bring and give to local acquaintances. A cheap gift just won't do from a foreigner, since we are all expected to be wealthy. Also nothing made in China or already available as a fake.
I am curious what solutions other people have found for this problem.

Kelvin Cao | | at the begining of the business in china, you may need this. to buy acquaintances gift really helps build friendship. but i don't think you need to do this all the time. why don't you treat them a dinner? that sounds better for me.

Brian Sutin | | In China, *ALWAYS* bring a gift for anyone you visit. It is expected. To do otherwise appears miserly. Government officials also give gifts to visitors, but as far as I know, these do not require reciprocation. We have stacks of these at home now, mostly stamp collection sets made for just this purpose.
We did well last trip with multi-vitamins and calcium supplements. We also tried Zippo lighters, but apparently those are available (probably fakes). We probably spent US$300 on our last trip for gifts.
This is all for social connections. Business connections get dinner, as previously suggested.
