My earlier office was next door to the food street (still head there once in a week :-)

Awesome collection of food items in a distance of half a km.. think there are about 100 shops selling simple indian food from idlis to kachoris to ......

You should not miss

- Corn masala (in any of the corn shops)
- Hot idlis with spicy coconut / tomato chutneys
- Akki / Ragi rotis / sweet polis
- Gobi manchurian (Yes... there is this guy who prepares just that!!)
- Paddu (paniyarams in tamil)
- Bajjis (all varieties... stuffed with onion and carrot with a dash of lime... yum)
- And for the sweet tooth .. gulkhand icecream

And you can round it off with a good cold or hot badam milk or gulab jamoon.. generally shops are open from 0630 in the evening till about 1100.. if you can stuff yourself to last for 2 days you would have spent about 50 to 70 bucks.

Tandoor is past its prime these days... lot of good ones on the block.. like chandi chowk in Koramangla... done up in jing bang style... no alcohol :-(((

angeethi on museum inn is another good one. their lunch buffet on week days is VFM. Some of the other restaurants i can recommend

- Malgudi : On the outer ring road for delicacies like neer dosa etc..
- The Dhaba : Right on top of Malgudi... good mutton boti kababs
- Ammas in Koramangla for down tamil nadu style idli / dosas and lot more... not 4 ppl who are finicky about service... sucks!!!
- Sahib Sind Sultan : New joint at Forum Mall.. done up like the The Palace on Wheels train.. with all bells & whistles (literally!!!)

Ahhh yes, there is KENTACKY near Kanteerva Stadium - no, not the US KFC Kentucky. This is a road-side place - stays up pretty late and mixes up hot south indian snacks with non-veg. Always crowded, and serves up pretty good food.

You should go to the dosa joints in and around shivaji nagar... just for the fun of watching them. One guy pours some 20 dosas on the tawa and another guy cuts a small hole in a ghee packet (500ml) and squeezes it like a baloon with water over the dosas!!! Voila... at the end of it you get a dosa so greasy that you will start singing "Heaven" (may b bcoz of the cholestrol it adds and you get the visions of your life after an heart attack)

Anand:

Do check out the push carts around Old Poor House Raod (OPH Road, popularly) and Jewellers Street - in the vicinity of Commercial Street. The push-cart food vendors there are something to watch. Was the first place where i saw chitrana (lemon rice) being used in place of the potato filling for the masala dosa!!!!!!

Talking about Kentacky u can probably get some booze there too after hours. :-) There will be this little guy hanging around asking if you a want a Quarter. ;-)

Which brings me to my next question. Where can you get booze after hours in Bangalore.
I know Red rose is one place where their shutter is down but one guys stands outside and takes your order and brings the booze bottle to your car.
Shivaji Nagar is another place where you will find a few booze shops with only half shutter down or some side window open.
Tavern is open till about 1 on weekends.
Hmmm thats all the places i know.

Anand Dhaba (not mine!!!) on the bellary road and one on the kanakpura road (forgot the name.. its the first one on the right hand side).. They serve some good chicken and Mutton preparations.

But the best thing is you can carry your liquor and sit there till late. These guys also sell liquor.... but they r not licensed to!!! So don't b surprised if the alcohol is pre mixed in soft drinks and served.

Within the city there is this Dhaba next to the gurudwara near ulsoor lake. Good food.. choice is limited though.

Hey guys

You seem to have covered most of the joints around Bangalore. The one restaurant that I would like to add is Blue Ginger (what used to be Paradise Island earlier) at Taj Westend. They serve Vietnamese cuisine and thier Sangrias are to die for especially the Champagne Sangria.

And yes I do drop into Food street quite often, the place is like a Juhu Chowpatty. Was happy to find pretty good Vada pav and Kutchi Dabeli!

Are you talking of Rice Bowl on MG Road? If so..... :-( that place closed down quite some time ago. The current Rice Bowl is on Lavelle Road..... ate there last some 2 years ago - apart from that speaking for itself, I haven't heard many good things about the place ......... either food or the way they have maintained the place.

Oh Suman!!

Gone is the Rice Bowl of those days!!! It wound up almost a decade ago Suman, quite a long time back. The alternate Rice Bowl on Lavelle Road is the one people speak of now. Not a patch on the food we used to get at the original rice bowl. As with Rice Bowl, Continental on MG Road disappeard as well!!! Sigh!!! My eyes are now moist!!!! There is a Continental on Residency Road, but the food...... waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

And the idli place down the street - gone as well. Sniff snife!!!.

In case you remember THE ONLY PLACE - well, atleast that has survived in a different location altogether now. They serve the best burgers even today I guess in Bangalore - they are on Musuem Road now.

Sigh!!!!

Some incongruous food joints:
1. Maratha Bhavan (Behind the Congress Party office on Queens Road). Its a small place, but serves authentic ragi mudde and mutton curry. Vegetarians can have ragi mudde with soppina saaru (A greens broth) and kaalu palya (pulses curry). The place has a standing section on the ground floor and a 'family' section on the mezanine. The mezanne seats about 20 people. It gets awfully crowded during lunch hours. So get there at 1 so that you get to sit n eat.

2. Savajis (Rajajinagar 1st Block). Again a small plsce with just four tables. You get excellent North Karnataka cuisine with jolada roti (maize/ corn roti) - both soft and kadak (crisp). It teams well with mutton kheema balls curry and a rich mutton chops.

Dec 10, 2007 9:06 pmLazeez Trouble#

khan khanbhai
Hi im a resident of Koramangala and a neighbour of Lazeez hotel, This person has occupied this place from past 10years and has been troubling the neighbours from that very time. Always there will be some or the other sound from this hotel, which is very intolerable, My House is very next to the hotel in the same line and i am not able to sleep in the night as he runs the chimney fan untill 12 in the night, after that the workers will wash the vessels which will go for another one hour and this noise is also too much, It seems there was a case running against this hotel and we have seen this hotel closed for many days, i think the owner has bribed the officials You know karnataka government and again opened and running it, i am not sure how other neighbours are keeping quiet, if this is going to continue i my-self will take leagal action and sue him, We request all of you to not to go to this hotel and encourage him. There is also one problem in this line drinage gets often blocked, so i had a gone backyard to the progress of the cleaning work, just then i discovered cooking was just happening near the window and the drinage cleaning person was pushing his stick inside the manhole where the distance between them was just not more than one feet i was literally shocked, I am not sure how many times the water from the drinage would have fell into the food when cooking, There is no even a mesh or glass which covers the window it is 24hrs open and in the night there are 100s of rats going in and out, i am not just bluffing or fooling aroung, you have to just come and watch the backyard and you will find the truth of it. If you happen to go the hotel just got the cooking section and peep through the window you can easily find how near is the drinage manhole. It is your decision now that you go to this hotel or not for you own good. If i find time i will also post the chimney, the window and the drinage pictures very soon. I am not writing this just for fun, i am posting this out of pain, i am doing this not just for me i have my father who is a heart patient and he needs some rest, and with these hotel people who doesnt have any kindness in their behaviour it has become a hell for us to live in, we do not have any other place to go out, so i expecting some help from you people, please help.
