Citibank free ticket – taking for a ride?Views: 1467
Apr 17, 2006 5:11 amCitibank free ticket – taking for a ride?#

Ashis Dutta
Sometime back Citibank offered a free domestic air tickets on purchase of every Rs. 30,000 on their credit card.

I spent, got the offer and asked for my ticket (to 3 destinations in preference) back in mid. Feb, for flying in end April (3 separate dates of preference).

No news from Citibank.

I called up the number given. They ask me to call another no. I called. They said they shall get back.

I sent e-mail. They reply, someone shall get back to me within 30 days, which means after my proposed date of journey.

Last Wednesday evening I got a call confirming my travel to Ahmedabad (my 3rd. pref.) in a particular date in July.

Hay, wait a minute, I asked for travel on 29th. April (all the 3 preferences are in end April).

But we got ticket for you on xx th. July, please confirm.

That’s preposterous!!

According to the conditions of the offer, it is clearly mentioned, tickers subject to availability. Please confirm travel on xx th. July.

No I shall not. Give me a written communication.

We can’t give you written communication.

End of call.

So now, I am riding, but not on the promised free ticket. I am being taken for a ride by Citibank.

Ashis, there is a reason they're affectionately referred to as "ShittyBank". "The Citi always sleeps." ;)

Legally, they probably have their ass covered in some fine print that allows them to decide when you can fly.

It is also shameful that in this electronic age, they need 30 days to respond to customer complaints.

Ashis,
I am not surprised at the way Citibank has behaved on this issue. Banks are usually absolutely reluctant in giving in writing any of the tall promises they make in their offer but are more than keen to put in writing some "conditions apply" clause (in your case, "subject to availability"), which at a later date helps them wriggle out of all commitments. Take for example their "life time free" offers..ask them if the Bank would give in writing that it would indeed be a lifetime-free thingie and they will fumble for answers.
I am sure its so very easy for them to get away with such irresponsible attitudes towards customers in India where the judicial system is of no help. In the US probably they would be royally messed up for such a thing..

Yes, Asish. I have the same experience. They are not giving me the destination I want neither day of travel I want. Yes, they are taking us for a big ride. Next in line to take us for raide is Airtel. Me and my wife, paid Rs. 500/- to get free ticket and we are yet to hear from them.

I have decided not to pay Citibank Credit card. Let this matter get settled in Court of Law, then only they will come to their senses.

To add to what Sid has said, I think it's high time that the judiciary lays down a verdict that says that all conditions of a contract be specified in advance and that "conditions apply" cannot be used to legally hide when companies don't adhere to their promises.

For a proper legal contract, both parties should agree to the terms, and this is only possible if these terms are specified in full somewhere. Allowing for "conditions apply" clauses without having any place to read these "conditions" lets them pull these types of "bait and switch" tactics on consumers.

Hi All,

Relating to this issue, I too had preety much similar kind of experience.

I got the same offer, gave three perferred dates and places.
After few days I get a call from CitiBank informing that I can get the ticket for my first preference place but for a date which is after 3 months. I asked for the tickets for April end and they offered me of July end. I enquired of possibilities of the other two places that I mentioned in my form. None available on the expected dates of mine or theirs!!!

But I said, OK. Give me the tickets on the mentioned date of your's and the place too. That conversation happened on 10th March. Till now no news from them. I too didn't enquire anymore.

Another of my coligue got the same offer. He asked for the same place as mine as first preferance. His preferred travel date was for May mid. The Bank people called him up before they called me and told him that tickets are all over for that preferred place till July end (whereas after some days they tell me that tickets for the same place can be available in July ), tickets of dates in July only available for his other choices. So he cancelled the booking.

I have decided not to call them or cancel the booking they do. Let them spend the money and give me the ticket for whichever date they like or if they at all like. It is upto me whether I use it or not. May be my some money (442Rs.) is gone, but let me see what can they do. By this, I atleast feel that I am not taken for a ride. Rather I have made them go for a ride :)

Hey I too got this offer and I filled the form sent it and was told that for 30days I would not even know if they got my form!!!!! I gave up at that stage thinking that this was a sham. But then exactly 30 days later I got an email from them sayng that they have received my form and that in the next 30 days I would get my tickets. They also gave me the number of the travel agent they have tied up with. I have not bothered calling them at all. I still can not believe they will actually give you anything remotely close to what you want or probably could use even!! Going by Ashis's experience, I am wondering who in heavens is able to plan five months in advance??!! May be I should also call up the number given to me and see what plans they have made for me :-)

May be all of us can write in to them together and lodge a protest!! Not sure if it will work though.

The amazing thing is that the ask you to choose three destinations, they ask you to give three dates, if I am right, with alternates for each destination (dont remember) and still they choose something that is way out of the range!!!

I often see many relevant issues on the Ryze, where the Ryzers have been taken for a ride on various issues. The most relevant are Credit Cards, Airlines, unreasonable interest charged, deficiency in service and so on. Most of us just air greivances and then fall short of taking any action. I suggest that all Ryzer hire a retired lawyer, who would fight for a common cause either in Consumer Court or Court of Law. What do you think guys?

I kept a Xerox copy of the filled up form that I had sent to them.

Yes, I feel this is a good idea to atleast make them aware that customers are not sleeping. If negligence of Bank is going too much, the customer forum is there to support the customers.

If the form is needed, I can provide so. But my next communication with them happened over phone. So can't provide that info in paper.

I have always found Citibank to be wanting in their service whenever I had issues. I escalated to their Chennai office as well as US office. No one responded.

The only thing I could do was to stop doing business with them. I returned their credit cards, stopped all other investment related transactions. Now I maintain my Suvidha a/c with some minimum amount like 5K. It may not affect them much, but gives me satisfaction. I have also successfully convinced at least 10 friends of mine not to go for Citibank loans. I suggest to all Ryzers to stop all businesses with Citibank, spread the word about their services (or the lack of it). Hopefully at some point of time it will start pinching them.

Kalpana Rajaram
Hey guys,
I had the same problem and we had set to visit Gaya and was
awaiting for the confirmation from citibank to book onward and the destination they offer finally is Mumbai.
Both my husband and me has the offer after spending 30k each.
After shooting off an email to the business manager Ramachandran I got a reply and it goes like this
Dear Ms.Rajaram,
Thank you for bringing this to my notice.
We will ensure that this issue is speedily resolved to your satisfaction.
Please bear with us in the interim.
With regards,
Ramachandran
After that I get a call from their rep asking me to fly to mumbai in july. That was the pits.
this was my reply
Dear Mr.Ramachandran,
An astonishing reply was given by your Citibank representative Daulath just a few minutes back. In spite of giving our options and dates well in time, the facility that was legitimately due was denied and alternative to fly to Mumbai was offered. The idea of the scheme is to benefit a customer and the caption "FLY FOR SURE" turned out to be a 'HOAX'. The scheme could have very well been "FLY TO OUR (CITIBANK) CONVENIENCE"
Does the Bank assume that customers will continue to fall for such gimmicks, which fails in its basic customer satisfaction? This is a clear violation of the consumer rights. This also clearly indicates Citibank pulling wool over the customer's eyes.
You should be aware and know that when a customer can spend an Amount of
Rs.30,000/- on purchases, can easily afford a ticket to any destination and this scheme was chosen to avail a benefit as a customer. This scheme was chosen by us leaving other card usages where atleast we would have got CASH BACK for the purchases.
We had chosen the dates to perform the last rites of our parents at gaya and thus given the dates. As referred in my earlier mail, the CALLOUS of the responses of your call center and help desk has now put us in a fix as we have to book the routes with full fare. We could have availed the Apex or any other fare options, had we known your indifferent limitations.
Will you take the responsibility and compensate the trauma and agony we are facing now?

Hi Nitin, Chandrani, Kiran, Suma, Sanjay, Lokesh and Kalpana,

Since we are all affected, let us do something about it.

If you think we can go to the press, let us quickly strategize. Going to the press does not affect our individual decisions to accept the free ticket or not.

If anyone here knows any person in the press who can help in this matter, please come forward.

This posting also goes as pm to the people above with my contact no.

I sympathise with you guys, and I strongly feel that you should kick the sh*t out of these guys and make such a big noise, that this escalates to the highest decibel level, that they hear and do something about this.

If I wait any longer, I will miss out on early bird fares on other airlines and probably end up spending 20K to attend this wedding.

I'll wait another ten days and see what comes of this.

No amount of PR work can undo the damage that their operations are causing. That the Bank is still flourishing is surprising in the wake of the number of persons who have been conned by the Bank. I liked the expression"Shitty Bank" which seems to describe the bank aptly
While the affected Ryzers are contemplating what to do the Bank carries on merrily with a lot more gullible but mute persons

Haven't read through all the thread but all I can say is: I mailed in my form Feb. 24th, still waiting after much silly correspondence ( and I mean silly - some automated replies accusing me of not being the same person as the cardholder...!?! Really!) for any shape of ticket.

They do give a number - 022 2665 2540 - supposedly works Mon - Sat 9 am to 5 pm. I got through *once* on this number, nothing much has happened since then.

Their latest gimmick is: spend Rs 30K on your debit card in April/May and get an AC.

My reponse: keep the AC.

HI all,

Though I was not a victim of this particular contest, I have my own reasons to hate the said bank. Hence I wrote a long letter to Mr. Ramachnadra and here is whathe has replied. Request all of you to give him a chance as per his letter. If he does not keep up his committement, its a good idea to approach consumer forum.

Ravishankar Daithota

Dear Mr.Daitota,

Thank you for bringing this to my notice.

If you have the email IDs or telephone numbers of these customers, it will help us establish contact swiftly with them to ensure that we resolve
the issue to the customer's satisfaction.

The service provider with whom we have contracted for this promotion operates under a strict service level agreement which we have entered into.
We will certainly ensure that we take up the matter with them on a priority basis, os that issues if any are swifty addressed.

There are a significant number of customers who have qualified for this program, and the response in fact, has far exceeded what we had
expected. Despite the promotion being valid only for the first 50,000 customers, we are accomodating customers over and above this too,
on a best efforts basis. There are a lot of satisfied customers who have availed this offer, and please rest assured that we will ensure that
all these customers situations too are taken care of so they are satisfied too.

Thank you once again.

With best regards,

Although I am not for or against the bank, I do think getting cheesed off at the one person who is taking an interest in replying to you may not be such a great idea. Sorry but that's just the way it is, at least he took the trouble to reply and provide an answer.

In my experience, there is always *one* person in any large organistion who will actually get your work done.

It is more effective to try and corner the people at the very top of the pyramid for action and answers in a mass situation (i.e. several Ryzers cheesed off with F for S)like this: i o w, in this case, the top person(s) at the bank in India, whose baby the Fly for Sure offer was, whoever that is/are.

At least we now know the reason: capacity 50,000, actual demand - above 50,000 applicants. Therefore a genuine shortfall in servicing; lumberous response as is the case in any oversized organisation.

Just my 2c worth.

1.In which billboard, that lured us to spend money for free ticket, was it mentioned that the offer is for the first 50,000 respondents?

2.First 50,000 only, and, Fly for Sure, are contradictory statements. Like changing the rule of the game to determine the outcome after the game is over.

3.The terms and conditions that Citibank and their agents are talking of today (like ticket subject to availability, etc.) was never communicated through any means before cardholders spent the money.

4.Why does the bank want the tel. nos. of un-serviced customers, when it is available with their agents who are calling up? Someone in the bank is behaving like Govt. Babus, doling out favors to whosoever is coming to his door. And I see, he has already achieved Benevolent Status.

It is time we Indians learn to see through the smoke-screen of discretionary favors, the bane of demand based economy.

So long we remain happy if (only)our things are get done because we know the right Person, rather than for doing the right Thing, we shall continue to be taken for rides.

This is not to undermine Kalpana's effort to help others get their tickets. She has been most altruistic. This is to put the bank's actions, and their image in perspective.

Apr 21, 2006 9:46 amsystem to work + Air Never Again Sahara!#

Bangalorean Bean
Yes, as Sanjay Choudary said, the system has to work, not the individual.

Whole Other Thread Dept.: About 10 of us who flew Air Never Again Sahara DEL-->LHR ( New Delhi to London Heathrow) in February 2006 had a most horrendous experience. Far worse than the Fly For Sure fracas. We were promised taxis from LHR "to our destinations anywhere in the UK" by several ground AND inflight crew (over the course of an awful day: flight delayed-no announcement-some vague food-yada yada)...

Guess what: we get off the flight and there is NO one frm Air Sahara. Our flight was delayed by 5 hours, connecting flights were missed and a family with 2 toddlers suffered the most...very long sad tale. I had told my host not to pick me up at some (undefined by AS) time of the night ( turned out to be 1 am ARR rather than the scheduled 6 pm ARR local time) . Net net: a few of us spent much of the night in the airport with NO one from AS available – in person, on e-mail, fax, phone, anything. Spent our own money and energy finally getting to our destinations, somehow.

Me: I spent GBP 126 finally getting to my destination via taxi, train and a friends’ car ( mentally, emotionally and monatarily expensive; also try finding a taxi outside a freezing , empty LHR airport, with bags in tow, at 1 am). To cut a very long sorry tale short, weeks later I located a "Complaints officer at AS” Mr Keshavlu in Delhi who after *much* chasing has offered an arbitrary amount of – guess how much - Rs 4000/- ( about GBP 51 !) as compensation. Another passenger was offered Rs 10,000/- as compensation…in the form of coupons on AS which we'd rather not fly on again. The other passenger has refused the small compensation.

Two months on, no coupons have arrived and we, the passengers who went through that awful night at LHR thanks to AS, are left chasing the promised coupons for some arbitrary small amount.

In this case - even identifying the individual has not yielded results so far. It's all up to the passenger to hound, chase - as if we had no other work to do.

We the consumers have to push the system and make it work – by using our feet to walk to competition, no?!

Hello Friends,

Well, Thanks a lot to the lady who gave the idea of mailing to Ramachandran :)

Following her suggestion, I sent a mail to Mr. Ramachandran at 12 noon today. I get a response from him by 1:50pm apologizing and assuring about the service.

Then at 5:30 I get a call from Citibank chennai asking about my preferred date and place to fly. I ask them to call me back after half an hour. At 6 again I get call from the same person. I give my choices of dates for one and only one destination.

By 6:30 I get mail from AirDeccan confirming my tickets with the PNR number as well as details of the ticket.

That was really amazingly fast response from the folks...I never deampt that they can do things so fast and with so much of professionalism. I mailed back to Ramachandran with Thanks.

So, friends, I feel there is still a chance for those who really want to take the opportunity. He seems to be a sincere person and really serious to save the image of the company.

All the Best to all...

After reading the thread so far, looks like someone has tipped the Citibank manager (Ramachandran) about the discussions here and they have pulled up their socks knowing the consequences of what was being discussed here. We should not be fooled by this one instance of (forced) good(?) service and look at the overall service of the bank.

Just making a point.

Dear Friends
I fully agree to what is happening in the thread and also find the response has been comming after writing to Mr TR Ramchandran, who I am told by Mr Tyagi of CITI Bank, is travelling, hence can not respond and he continued to inform that he is ready to solve my problem. well he did solve the problem and but after having read the plight of a few on Deccan Airway I had made sure that I am not keen on flying by night or after long waits the tickect has to be other than Deccan Airlines. I was pleasently surprised for the response from CITI Bank ( which had just woken up to its slogan that it nEVER sleeps) and I recieved a sms on my cell confirming the PNR on SPICE jet. On checking the details on the net well the initial Euphoria of he success had vanished and the error had been made once again??? CITI that always SLIPS. The good person was again called to inform of the wrong destination and he promised to correct in no time and the same was corrected in next 5 min and I recieved a confirmation over the phone,SMS and net once again.
Afte the whole excersie it come to my realisation that these Banks serve only those who are awake and who wake up the Sleeping BANKs.
this also brings to fore the lack on intitiation sytem in the so called professional Cust Support sytem in this service sector Bank.
Well I still feel this needs to be taken up and not left at the fact that we as individuals due to the positions and perseverance have been served but he service has come after out intervention and not as per the sytem it shud have normally come.

Now its is with you all again as I ahve made it clear that I am not keeping quite even if I get my tickets.
