Networking is one of the many techniques to search for your next career option, but a very random one. If you are there at the right time and place, and if your networking partner is in a position / interested in giving you a push up, it may be effective.
As you have yourself found, chances of all the above coming together are rather less. This is not to say it does not work - just like Job Portals ( and TPRs ) do, sometimes :-)
Much better - IMHO - to network to find people who share your interests and you can be friends with. Certainly it is much more FUN !!

What is possible is, you are working in XYZ profile and you looking to switch, you can use your contact on such site to get informed about jobs in various companies for your kind of profile.
If you talk about corporate, most of them will have job board for employees referral based recruitments, so that’s exactly when you can get informed and walk-in for interview.
There may be many finance guys on Ryze who are sitting at much higher position then one should be contacting for such opportunity, that’s may be a problem.Private Reply to Mihir Lakhani |

Nikhil Mathur | | Mihir is right to a large extent. As a headhunter, I use networking as a tool to get to the right candidate. However, if it were to be used the other way around...to look for jobs...its not as effective. Simply because it all depends on the number of people who see your posting.
If you are looking for a job the best way would be to target appropriate consultants. An important thing to remember is that each consultant has a specialty area they work in...it could be industry or functional. You would need to know which consultants are the right people to speak to.
You could also do some bit of headhunting yourself by finding out the HR people in the companies you are interested in. And then you can send them your cv. Thats a more direct approach likely to yield better results.
Of course newspaper adverts and job portals are always available.
I have had an instance where I found my candidate on a flight. He was sitting right next to me and we got around chatting and I interviewed him right there. That happens too.Private Reply to Nikhil Mathur |

Oh yeah !! .. i have already done all those things that u have listed ... but sometimes what u want may not be available on sites or consultants. I have already searched the profiles which i am looking forward to. Now such vacancies are not available anywhere.
Many times it may happen that one may get a job from unsolicited application. Thats why I took networking.
