Jolly Joseph | | Hi Ryzers,
I got a mail through my friend from wipro employees about thieves attacking them. I know the same type of incidents are going on in Bangalore and posting in ryze when sombody experience it badly. I am still posting it to inform you about this. Please go through the message.
"Hi All, I would like to share one incident which happened to my friend Gawtham, (He is working in Valtech), today early morning. He is staying in Belandur came from his native town to banglore at 4 AM. From Silk board he got into an auto and got down at Belandur (Out Ring Road, near Intel Office) and walked towards his house. Suddenly one Toyota Qualis came and stopped in front of him and took him inside vehicle and started to move. Inside the vehicle there were 5 people including driver and already caught two girls. (My friend saw that girl's ID card and found they are Wipro employees). They have tied everyone's legs ,hands and plastered their mouth. Those thieves had taken all the credit cards as well as money from him. They asked him ATM PIN number for this debit card. This guy had given wrong number. One of the thief went to the ATM and tried withdrawing it. Then he come to know it is invalid number. They beaten him up severely front and back. His hands got fractured and they had cut his fingers, hands using knife. Then he told the correct number , those thief had withdrawn 18,000 from the ATM and threw him away in some place near to Ramamoorthy nagar. He shouted for help. It is early in the morning ,everyone scared to come and have a look . He slowly moved towards the road and got a help from one kind heart person who had given him hundred rupees. He caught the auto and came to my house.I couldn't able to forget the way he came to my house. This hands and legs are fully blooded as if he was met in an accident done by the vehicle. This back side has the red marks. I took him to the hospital. He is getting treatment now. He doesn't know what happened to those girls till now.
If you are staying late night , Plz Go only by your office cab.Take to your home for dropping you.
Folks, This is happened early in the morning. Make sure while coming from your native to bangalore, you will be reaching between 5 to 6AM and getdown in the Bus stand where there is crowd. But be very careful on your way to house.
Unfortunately, If you are getting caught by thief, Give your cards,ATM number, jewels everything. Your Life is more precious than your money and belongings.
If it is not very important dont carry your credit and ATM cards everyday with you.
Please fowrard this information to all your dear ones and friends.
Regards Vinoth Alagesan." Private Reply to Jolly Joseph |

subhit chauhan... Chak de..... | | I know about this incident as i am working in the same company. HR head of our company send a mail to everybody in our office about this incident yesterday and contacted the commissioner of police personally and informed him about the same. It’s so shocking. Nobody is safe now a day in Bangalore which used to be the safest place once upon a time. Everyday you listen some or the other incident of mugging in bangalore. I remember I used to roam around in Bangalore late nights freely in my bike. Now I am afraid to roam around in my car also. Dunno what the cops are doing about such incidents in bangalore ?

Deepak Shenoy | | Madhu (Menon) and I had spoken about this a few days back; essentially in such a situation, when you are overpowered and outnumbered, you will be beaten up badly if you don't give them the correct ATM pin.
Your life is more important than money, but still you want to avoid losing too much money! There are some ways to counter this. I have listed a few at http://theunknownindian.blogspot.com/2006/07/atm-attacks-call-for-lower-limits.html.
We should also get more serious about personal safety. Muggings tend to go on the rise where income disparities are high, and Bangalore has become that kind of a city. Private Reply to Deepak Shenoy |

Bikash Kumar Das | | Friends, as we ryzian are more stronger than anyone found in web, cant we think for a special force by organising our some of strong persons in a vehicle to get ready to counterfoil any assults? Provided we do inform useless city police(for regularizations of law?) and the victim could manage to dial some single speed key from mobile and the route? I hope we got lot many intellectuals with us and easily do this.(2200hrs-0500 hrs). But for such the minimal cost has to be borne. Please discuss realization of it.I feel this will help to stop such activities. When I saw Rajkumar death issue and Bangalore police running for life(This is the time they can run!!!),I no more have good faith on them to counter dacoits or extremists. As basically one can see a Hoysala jeep in front of bars anytime!!! I wish good suggestions to inform City police and the IT heads for begining of new emergency security measures taken by Ryzians!!

Amit Raychowdhary | | Since the IT industry has a a very big stake in Bangalore, head honchos need to get together and look at the possibilty of introducing security solutions with the help of private firms on routes frequented by BPOs,Call Centers,IT Cos...which may reduce the threat to an extent....the traditional law enforcement agencies is obselete and not geared to handle these challenges on a war footing. Varun kumar Shrivastav | | Hi,
Similar experience was faced by a friend of mine working for one of the software companies. She was traveling early in the morning in her car .She was stopped by a group of 5 people (what a co incidence – it was a quails too). But this girl was lucky and had a presence of mind. She emptied the full can of pepper spray on the advancing group. It gave her enough time to escape from the place. When she approached the police station to lodge a complaint guess what the cops said “Any way nothing has happened to you, so why lodge a complaint now, It’s your mistake of traveling alone!! “ she can not speak or understand Kanada, so couldn’t do anything. This incident has made her to relocate to Pune. Friends, we can not rely upon cops for sure. Only if we start helping each other whenever we come across such situations, probably we can see the safety in the horizon. Police will only act when you show them money not otherwise.
For those who want to buy pepper spray : Contact 9342537713, his name is rana singh and he is the manufacturer. you may refer my name for a better price :-)LOL

Amit Raychowdhary | | We can also look at the possibilty of introducing civilian patrols in every neighbourhood in Bangalore where every able bodied member of a household can take turns to be a part of night patrol and expenses for the petrol, car etc can be borne by the entire neighbourhood....this way we dont depend on the cops, youngsters can get their share of adventure and sense of duty from this exercise and the streets will be clean from vermin....blaming the cops is a futile exercise. Kiran Chalapathy | | No Offence Mr. Singh, even after considering the fact that this indeed IS a business network, I personally would worry more about the poor girls in that car and what action has the police force taken to find these poor souls, than just taking things (that one may assume happened) for granted.
I am safely assuming that we are mostly aware of the concept of Pepper sprays for self -defense, I am sure many of us will definitely give your product a thought. But can anyone tell me if you know ANYTHING about those girls? Has there been any media coverage on this incident.
No hard feelings ... it irritates me that many of us seem to stepping away from the grave fact that these girls might still be captive with those people.
Again, this is my sincere effort to draw our attention to the problem in hand and then offcourse we can all think and act upon making us and our families secure.

Bikash Kumar Das | | Friends, sad to know nothing about these three girls till this time..Is anyone aware of,like from Wipro??Is anyone in contact with office or family(if they got)?
On the base of story in noon I placed a suggestion to have private Rapid action group(RAG) registered with Karnataka Govt to work for police for a quicker solutions. This will prevent waiting for police or keep calling them. They dont have speedy vehicle. If someone can sponsor atleast 4 Jeeps or Fast vehicle with extra lights, fittings to meet emergencies and ropes etc and Radio link to have monitoring and a common number to be noted in all mobiles for single dial- will do.Only need (to begin with)strong brave people to face and handle such situations direly with good driving capabilities. Why I am saying is that even I am ready to come forward with my previous commando job.I might be from medical field.
Hope some suggestions will come to help our own people at distress as this is best to do at the begining and when these culprits will come to know of it, they will reduce such activities.I am sure.
IT people also must concentrate on self defence and hard exercises to keep the mind and body fit to overcome any such incidents. Its only fitness and regular exercises early in the morning to help you to keep fit.Fitness is more important than the office job.Overwork increases more stress and these culprits know well of it.So they make easy target.
Please stop carrying credit/DEbit cards at night un necessarily. In INdia its now more deadly.Better since one know how much cash is needed, to carry 400-500 is enough.
Mind it that its nothing other than money-that easily comes from ATMs... But with Kiran I am also worried over these girls??

Sunil Mantri | | Hi all,
These incidents have become common on Electronic city road. Few months back at Bomanhalli, my cab driver dropped me to office and while going back ,few guys on 2 wheeler had blocked the road. When the cab driver asked to leave the way, They just got down from their bikes, stabbed the driver, broke the glasses. Later they attacked with knife, he had a narrow escape, instead of his neck his ear got cut. People were just standing and watching everything happen. Something serious has to be done, hope TARUN comes out with some final conclusion after listening to all our views.

Malini Suryanarayanan | | Maybe it is time to put personal safety over and above job requirements and reject companies that do not prioritise the same.
Vigilante groups are an option, but, they should not become a law unto themselves. Privately sponsored patrols are also an option.
Sadly all the pepper spray in the market is useless when you are pinned down. And especially for women, by the time the cap is off and nozzle is aimed the deed is done! No offense to the manufacturers, but the design of the pepper spray dispensors have to be seriously re-thought.
Another alternative is the tazer, but I do not know whether they are sold in retail in India. I know they are available online. Private Reply to Malini Suryanarayanan |

Ravi Srinivasan | | Hai All:
I have been going through all the mails on this issue. Yes, these incidents are on the rise. All the ideas about self defense / private patrol are all more fine.
But most important of all, is that I feel, our behaviour / body language / our dressing also play an important role.
One should never do anything that is inviting for the trouble makers. Mainly these crimes are done after observing / following the vicitim over a period.
It would also be advisable to travel in groups / avoid late nights / wee hours of morning as much as possible.

Deepak Shenoy | | That's the wrong measure. So if we all dressed in burkhas, there would be no mugging? Ridiculous. "Dress sense" and body language wise, this is a free country and we can do what we please. (within the limit of covering certain body parts) That gives NO one the right to violate our liberties!
We should protect our freedom, rather than build presumptions that people get attracted to a dress. Theft and burglary happens even to sari and salwar clad women. If someone uses the defense that someone wore a skirt so he thought it was an invitation for rape, we should bash his teeth in.Private Reply to Deepak Shenoy |

Siddhartha Deb | | I agree Deepak..using pretexts like 'dress sense' and 'body language' as an invite to rape and mugging is the most ridiculous thing to hear. These muggers and like are guys looking for easy money from the most vulnerable victim..dress and body language have got nothing to do with it. So often one gets to hear these stuff..gets nauseating at times and diverts attention from the core issues. sid Private Reply to Siddhartha Deb |

Ravi Srinivasan | | Hai Deepak & Siddarth:
You guys seem to have taken quite seriously about the comment.
It is just one of the things that we can control especially if we are arriving late night or in the wee hours of morning. (especially when we are alone and have residence on outskirts or under developed lay-outs!!)
I interact quite often with the lawmakers and it is same opionion they express.
I am given to understand that the muggers generally pick out the weaklings / suceptible ones.
We definitely need not sacrifice our sense or freedom of dressing but can always be as per the occasion / work rules.
Let us try and help to reduce and prevent such incidents ( ofcourse it would be herculean task to totally eliminate such incidents!!)

If we want to do that why dont we all shave our heads bald? You know some of these goondas get attracted to hairstyles also.
Let us all paint our faces black. Such goondas are attracted to fair people.
Let there be no lipstick for bangaloreans.

Shobha(usha) gowri | | Unfortunately it is true:studies have been conducted in the US to understand the "muggers mentality"-one of them focussed on how they chose their victims They said they would not "risk" attacking someone who looked like they would fight back they chose their victims-they did not "just" attack Also they said somthing interesting:they waited for people who were waiting for a boyfrind or gf and who did not turn up-they said that and an emotional event was the most vulnerable moment. The incidents that happened in Bangalore sure are palnned to the last detail:they are watching and I think the guy was just a last minute luck for them-be the girlsw ere the target-and they know three things-one Indians are no good in fighting back, the people around will not help and thirdly the police will DEF not help or take action Easy money na? Also dress makes a huge impact-in a sex starved country like ours where eve teasing is a sign of manliness-well.... watch the movies-if the hero can lift your skirt and make you fall in love with him-hey why cant I do it? Also i hate to say this-but many young things send out wrong signals-in their need to appear"sexy" they say and do things that as a mother has me jaw dropping Go to Forum on a weekend:the crowd there is def "in" for fun-that includes female watching-and I suppose guy watching too-I have had-at my age!!-to collar guys

Nitin Shah | | A Kolkata bsed company, offered to set up police booths at about 60 locations in Bangalore, manned by police personnel and having same power as police stations, equipped with wireless, arms and ammunations and power to register FIR.This was taken up at the highest police administration level. But the plan fell through, becuase they do not have sufficient police personnel available to man these booths. They are not interested in recruiting or training in any near future. So, as I see it, there is no end to this state of affirs, it is just going to get worse. Chief Minister is chip off the old block. There will be no initiative from him or his Government. Where does he have time? These guys are only interested in taking from software industry, and when time comes to give it back, they look the other way. Has any of the local MLA's even raised this issue in the legislature ? I doubt it.

Siddhartha Deb | | There have been eve-teasers even before we were born and there will be eve teasers after we are dead and gone..no matter what dresses the eves have been wearing. Nuns have been raped and so have been 5 yr olds who dont know a thing about titillation. Yes, dresses attract attention but where do we draw a line? In some families even today wearing jeans is a strict no-no for girls and yet ofcourse we cant have a uniform dressing code. If the girls instead of wearing skirts wore sarees when they ventured out they would still be oogled at, still be the centre of unwanted attention. I know the dresses that the girls wear today would not be easily worn by girls when I was in my teens and yet again the dresses which my girl college mates wore were surely not worn by ladies of mom's generation when they were young. Dress codes will change with time and the desire to attract attention of the opposite sex has been there for centuries..its not as if the teens of today invented it.
I am neither espousing nor opposing the ways of dressing that today's youngsters resort to..I m no one to sit in judgement but to use a certain dress code as a reason for wrong doing is certainly not the done thing.
My opinion... sid Private Reply to Siddhartha Deb |

Deepak Shenoy | | I like the idea of a "citizen's watch". Let me propose an implementation:
1. In each area, there will be a car patrolling the streets every hour in the night. For larger areas, we will need more than one car. 2. We need four to five people per car per area, armed with lathis 3. Interested citizens must register for the roster. The roster will be to patrol between 11 PM and 7 AM. 4. The roster will change every two hours. The idea is to drop a person and pick up the next. Pickup and drop is at doorstep, and will have to be co-ordinated. A changeover can take upto half an hour. 5. The designated driver will change every two hours, and the car as well. Citizens will pool their cars, and costs of petrol will be shared by all. 6. Each person on the roster will have a time between 11 PM and 7 AM and care will be taken that any person does not get overly allocated in the wee hours. 7. A software will be written to manage this process, with a printout taken every day (costs to be shared). 8. If there are any drop outs the software will attempt to allocate a different person in the roster, with a limit that drop out notifications can happen only 24 hours hours earlier. 9. If drop outs happen later (i.e. within 24 hours of the scheduled time) the patrol has to stop for the night. Do not take the risk of having less people than required! (other inputs are welcome of course)
If this is an acceptable solution (or a good place to start), what we need is: 1) List of volunteers with area inforation (note: volunteers must agree to patrolling on any day between 11 PM and 7 AM, with rights to refuse once they are allocated) Please also mention if your car can be used (you will drive). 2) "Core Group" volunteers who will help with co-ordination. These people will need to refine the process (dos and don'ts) coordination with police and ambulance etc. 3) Software authors who can give their time and web spaces for hosting this. 4) A training manual: Retired defence and police personnel can help give tips on disarming and handling sensitive issues. Doctors and nurses can help us give first aid info.
We can do this. How many of us will raise our hands? Private Reply to Deepak Shenoy |

Deepak Shenoy | | Thinking about this further:
1) Usha's suggestion of having a mobile phone free to call is very good - I have such a phone as well.
2) People can call friends/relatives or SMS them with the auto number that they are going on (it is displayed inside the auto). The other idea is to have a computer connected to a cellphone that will receive SMSes and record them in an online database. This can be quickly scanned if the person goes missing. Numbers will be kept private, only shown to the core group/police.
3) It is too much to ask the same people to do this every single day. There are 28 shifts a week (four per night). Some people will be able to do one shift a week, some others will be able to do two. To cover from dropouts, we would need a minimum of 30 people per area.
4) A car should only cover 1 sq. km. of area, not more (around 1 km by 1 km) .
5) Patrol cars can be marked with a cloth board with vacuum holders (I hate stickers). (the same kind you find on cars to screen the sun) The board should be removed when the car moves on.
Frankly, it's better that in each area people get together and figure the rostering out on a piece of paper. What each of you should do is to go this weekend to your neighbours with this proposal, and see how many people will join you.
If you have 30 people, and at least four owners willing to use their cars, you are in business. Organising this on a single unified scale is a full time job which I don't have time for; I'm sure everyone else here is busy too.
If many groups are willing to do this, we can collectively go to the police to garner their support as well.Private Reply to Deepak Shenoy |

I scanned three newspaper to find any information or cover up done by any news paper..but couldn't find any thing..
Tried to check with police control room..they don't have any such incident reported anywhere..
I am not doubting on the story but trying to establish the creditability and curious to know what action police have taken..Can anybody inform us about the response of the police or action taken by them and which police station report is filed..? so that in case of inaction something can be done..
could it possibly be a hoax story..like now a days .. happening in schools and colleges..? what is the source..?Private Reply to Ashish Aggarwal |

Infact, this issue was of most importance and i did make a few calls to WIPRO and was told that this was not the case and that they had also come across similar mails and have treated them as HOAX/RUMOR.
However if anyother person in this forum has any more information or contacts to bring out the story in its true light, pls post it in here. Regards

If local patrols can be set up, we will be glad to do our bit and supply pepper spray units to the same, afterall the FORCE needs to have some teeth too.

Rana Singh | | Dear malini, Noted your point, however disagree completely with your conclusion that pepper sprays are useless.
Our Pepper sprays are designed for "DRAW and FIRE" Concept and offer 'SAFETY IN UR HANDS" .
depending on the Model of pepper spray one has, it takes from 2-5 seconds to fire a burst of pepper on the face of an attacker and negate the threat.
I have yet to come across any other product which can help one negate a life threat in matter of seconds and cause no permanent damage or injury, hence we developed and launched this product.
Let me offer a examples ( all true life story): 1) a lady and her husband were attacked by three people carrying swords, this was a third attempt on their lives, and both of them have licensed Firearms at home, however it aint an easy task to carry a hand gun with oneself 24/7.
This couple were standing at their gate when they were attacked, and the lady had the presence of mind to spray them all with pepper spray, completely negating the threat posed by them.
This Incident happned in Broad Daylight in a locality, where their were enough people around, however no one offered to assit or help this couple when they were being attacked (termed as BY-STANDER APATHY).
The fact that the couple came over to tank us for the life saving product is a huge encouragment to our effort.
This stated, we would welcome any design or function suggestions for improvment for our products.

Ajit Nathaniel | | Hi everyone, It is very sad to hear of things like this in a city that has always had a reputation of being safe. it is a sad thing, but these incidents are only rising. Even areas like Indiranagar are becoming haunts for motorcycle marauders.
I'm promoting the Israeli martial art Krav Maga in south India. We are currently working government special protection groups, but we also conduct seminars on self defence with a certain focus on Ladies self defence, anti car-jacking, defence against deadly weapons, etc.
These seminars are not just classes where we teach you to punch and kick... anybody can do that if the provocation is sufficient. These seminars also work on a psychological angle to teach people to defend themselves by reflex.
Our instructors are trained by ex Israeli defence personnel, many of whom have seen active combat. These very same instructors train VIP Protection professionals and anti-terrorist squads worldwide. the system has a rigourous quality control mechanism built around having instructors go back for recertification every 6 months.
If you would like any further information on these seminars, please drop me a line.

Ashok kamath | | Hi,
There was a similar posting about 14 months back on this very same forum. A techie was robbed at HSR layout in May, last year and the subject was deliberated and I had propounded my views in similar lines with Ajit.
this is the link to that thread : http://www.ryze.com/posttopic.php?topicid=467783&confid=366
and this is what I said there--
------quote--- Hi, I stay at HSR Layout Sector-1 and the recent spate of techies being robbed is scary for sure. I believe that inspite of the police nakabandhi and patrolling, such incidents show no sign of abating.
I believe in empowering ourself, instead of depending on the police very much. We do have Gym, Yoga, meditation and other activities in most of the S/W Biggies place. In a similar line, the Companies should come up with regular training camps where in they can have some inhouse martial artists in Karate, Taekwondo, Judo etc who can coach the employees and turn them from soft targets into some formidable opponent.
These goons are basically cowards who cannot earn a few rupees by honest work and thrive on spreading fear and strong arm tactics. With better training we give them back in same measure for their dastardly act.
For smaller companies (like where I work) where we do not have such facilities, we can group up areawise (like HSR layout or jayanagar) at a club or a play ground and see if we can get a Martial Artist who can train us in Martial arts or thinking further, we can enrol with some existing Martial arts schools and learn how to defend ourself. Half and hour to an hour a day should do great to the confidence and toughness of our young generation and take on these hoodlums headon.
we have seen generally it is 2 or max 3 members who form a gang to rob the public. while the leader of the gang may be a small time toughie, still the other 2 are there may be to help him out and may not be really toughies at all. A reasonably trained person should be able to tackle these people. and remember they too do have fear and are scared. it is just who is more scared that makes a difference.
I can understand if an old lady of over 60 years is chain snatched. She is powerless. But a young techie aged 25 years or so? Powerless as of now. Yes. but should'nt be so in future.

Since all major incidents are found from these area only. With all the details its noticed that the culprits are none other than drop out BPO/Call center/IT drivers-who get annoyed when dound drunk and dismissed immediately. So they take revenge with their village mates. All the time its a Qualis!! I did suggested to have self defence, routine exercises to keep mind fit and alarmed(so police dnt have these qualities at all!!). Even I volunteered for the rescue job with my car on immediate SOS call to my cell if anyone wanted. But a prive have to be paid for it as its involvement of my life too!!(Time 2230 hrs-0600 IST). Deepak Shenoy | | We have like five of six people right now. It's a start but not a very encouraging one.
Jasvinder brought out an interesting point: that if we were all to patrol, who would we need to protect? But frankly what I suggested is on a per-area basis. I don't expect to patrol more than three km away from where I live - if in each area, people get together and form a local patrol that's what makes sense - that is what what I intended.
Usha, we can't meet the police with 5 or 10 people, and without a serious plan, handbook etc. Each area should set up it's own citizen's watch (commissioner will bless any such group set up)
What I have is a basic plan. What we need is: one person per area to take responsibility and get 30 people in that area to sign up for the patrol. Right now five people in five differnet areas is just not going to work. But then, this hasn't really been advertised or talked about. Let me organise a way to get this information around and let's see where we can go from there.
The best way of course is if all of us had the ability to defend ourselves. Guns are interesting but how many of us have actually fired a gun? It's bloody scary, I tell you - and if you don't have the training you can hurt yourself. If it's just a fear thing and not a real gun you care about, buy an airgun - at point blank range it can cause serious damage, which is what you want to do when mugged.Private Reply to Deepak Shenoy |

Kanad Bandyopadhyay | | Hi All,
Been reading your posts. One additional thing that would really shake up the systems. Use forums such as Ryze/mobiles/SMSes - - a concept called Community of Participation (CoP) and sit in dharna in front of CMs office at Vidhan Soudha. Present him with signatures , call the media and keep up the continuous pressure . Tell the stake holders/owners to participate as well - give a clear message that you would shift out of Karnataka. Knowledge industries need little infrastructure and can easily relocate. Do partial relocation and keep up the publicity and pressure. Then see what happens. Our rulers can solve the problem in a weeks time - they know everyone and everything. Everything will fall in line - the police and the works. Lastly use the RTI as a follow-up.
The leaders are the most intelligent set of people and physically and mentally the toughest. HArvard university has also said the same about India. All you have to do is to ignite their imagination and subtly tell them that their turf is danger.

MANOJ KUMAR | | Hi All,
I am reading this post continuously and was wondering if this will work.
Ok suppose following is the equation:
1. We need to patrol from 10pm to 4 am. = 6 Hours Minimum 2. 4 people will be there in Car. 3. We petrol all 7 days. 4. Each person patrols for 2 hours.
Then if one person patrols once a week we will need 3 X 4 X 7 =84 Persons in each area for patrolling to work.
I think we should hire 3 professional securities in each area and 1 or 2 member will join them. This way we will need minimum 21 people in each area, still a big number, seeing the response till now.
Anyway I am ready for this in my area with my Car – HRBR Layout.
With a lot of regards for all the contributors, - Manoj. Private Reply to MANOJ KUMAR |

Rana Singh | | Deepak and all, Guns are a strict NO-NO , even the police will have second thoughts if we were to approach them with this idea, Carrying firearms, will create almost like a private millitia/army.
secondly, the second anyone pulls out a gun or a similar looking object(even a airgun), the LAW OF SELF PRESERVATION kicks in for the person facing the business end of the gun or gun like object.
Law Of Self preservation is a universal law which states that a person (any person, even a mugger or a criminal element) has the right to "take life"(KILL) , in the process of self preservation(to saves ones own life).
Like i mentioned before, we are willing to provide pepper sprays for the cause.

This is the first time I hear about it. To the best of my knowledge a person has the right to kill only in self defence.
If I pullout a gun and aim at a possible intruder at my home I dont think he has a "lawful right" to kill me to protect/preserve his own life. It is I who has to the right to kill to protect myself or my family not the intruder or a person threatening me.Private Reply to V Ganapathy |

Rana Singh | | Hi all, Was just mulling over efficient ways to make the city safer and came up with a simple idea.
Why cant we ask the FM radio channels for their help. someone like radio City, they have all the infrastructure in place, people in distress can send a SMS to their dedicated 4 digit number & they can relay this information on Radio.
i am sure that most people are tuned onto the FM radio while driving (late nights).
If we can impress upon the FM channels to agree to this, they can alert everyone tuned in on their radio frequency about the nature of distress and other clues like vehicle number , vehicle colour, heading in which direction etc.
Any driver in the area of distress can respond to this call, thus mobilising instant help.
This channel can also be interactive as people can phone in and report the progress and incase of multiple teams responding to the same distress call. ie, depending on the location the team ahead can be used to block the road and the teams following can rear block OR incase of Road junctions, the teams can split and follow one road each so no time is lost and the team spotting the subject of the chase can call in and inform the other teams through the FM station.
sounds a lill complicated eh.... i think this can work... now anyone who knows people at radio station????

Amit Raychowdhary | | Ajit, firstly ,one of the main issues in the US today by a large section of people is to do something about the Gun Control since picking up a automatic gun or something even more powerful than that from a gun store is childs play for a US citizen and thats where the problem starts.. Secondly,as any licensed arms holder or having arms will tell you that learning how to use a gun is a matter of weeks or even days but what is of paramount importance is how well one can handle the responsibilty of using or not using that power and this frankly takes time and a lot of maturity to deal with situations....i think last year there was a shootout in a prominent pub on mg road for a trivial reason...also where weapons are readily available such as bihar or the border states, people use them at the slighest provocation. However Stun Guns and Tazers are illegal for use in India by civillians. As they emit a high discharge electric shock and can cause heart Attacks.
The cost of these is also prohobitive.
Infact Mr Shekar Jatti is a client of ours and has procured many units of our pepper sprays which he is trying to market to The police Forces across India.

Deepak Shenoy | | The more I think about this the more the solutions seem to be:
1) Personal self defense: Useful if you are attacked by 1 or 2 people. Learn a martial art, or simple self defense techniques . Use the head and elbow, they can hurt. An uppercut hit with the lower part of the palm can knock a person senseless for a minute etc.
2) Weapons: I don't believe the concept of "self preservation" applies in Indian law - only self defense. Carry a pepper spray or an air gun - both are allowed for civilian use. You can also carry a knuckle duster - this is a hard iron ring that goes neatly around your fingers, and a punch can break a lot of bones. Obviously, if you carry a weapon be ready to use it - you can't point a pepper spray and not shoot if the person still attacks you.
3) Citizen's watch: I'd proposed a plan before and now I believe that each area can (or must) have it's own citizens watch. We can't have a Bangalore wide watch - that is like building a police force, which is ridiculously overdoing it. It's better to have people in each area take care of the watch, the roster and the scheduling.
There are some ground rules that each citizen's watch patrol should follow; I have mentioned a few above and will try to make a list on my web page.
4) Employing guards: People from each area can pay for patrolling guards - not really great for security but at least they can raise the alarm.
It's not possible to remove burglary completely. But we can make it difficult for the burglars. What is needed is not an internet web page or a ryze post - but action on the street.
How about a meeting to discuss security issues? I'm not in town this week and weekend, but how about next tuesday, at India coffee house on M.G. Road? Private Reply to Deepak Shenoy |

Soldat inconnu | | Guys - interesting thread and precisely what I've felt as well. See below - I've sent a long letter to The Hindu awhile ago - this never has got published though :-)) but that does'nt faze me.
Why can't someone file a PIL in the Karnataka high court - I think that by itself should wake the policy machinery up !!
Note the point below about the red alert. I'd sent this msg on the 8th July, and 3 days later there was 7/11. No changes whatsoever in and around the Whitefield areas (save for ITPL which had a few sleepy paunchy cops who pretended to do a security check).
================================================== Dear sir -
I'm referring to the various articles that've appeared lately (in the Hindu) on the worsening crime rate in Bangalore city - even areas like Airport Road/IndiraNagar seem to be unsafe after 9 PM. In the light of this there's a new commissioner of police who has taken charge, who promises to improve things as always. There're several things that need immediate attention :
1. Patrolling/Police presence on the outskirts of Bangalore where most of the IT class travel to and from eg. Whitefield/Airport Road areas. There's no presence of cops after 7 pm and even if there are - there's no enforcement/deterrent to rash driving. Needless to say, this class is the one that's being targeted the most due to its obvious affluence. 2. In general there does'nt seem to be any urgency in deploying policing/patrolling in the wee hours anywhere in the city. They only seem to be there 10 AM-7 PM. In Chennai there're moveable traffic blocks put in after 9 PM to deter speeding. The best eg. was when there was a "red alert" sounded nation-wide (due to the Ayodhya terrorist attack) - I didnt find a single cop in the entire Whitefield area to protect our pillars of IT (eg. ITPL) !! 3. Signals that hardly anyone obeys if there're no cops around. The general public must be constantly educated about traffic rules and safety. Token drives and programs are not going to matter unless the police take initiative to educate constantly and at the right forums. Senior police officials should visit large IT companies and educate the so-called civilized IT crowd. 4. The pedestrian signals which are usually installed, nobody (including the pedestrians) pays attention. They just dart across if there's seemingly no one approaching. Atleast the cops at the junction should enforce and use the opportunity to educate. 5. Call center vehicles - no effort is made to curb their speeding or rash driving. After the incident that happened last year there was some dust kicked up but no sustained effort has been observed nor made in reality.
If we could bring in more of these in a sustained manner, Bangalore would become a more safe place to live in. ========================================================Private Reply to Soldat inconnu |

V Ganapathy | | Gated communities is a good idea to prevent crimes.
In the olden days cities would be surrounded by a high security fort to defend itself from the enemies. It seems the clever Brahmins lived outside the forts to escape contacting with people with contagious diseases, street dogs and getting attacked by petty criminals.
So we can learn a few useful lessons from our old kings and brainy brahmins:
1. Gate up the existing residential localities. The police are already doing it partially by setting up check points at entrances into residential areas. Just a few modifications should do the trick: set up permanent gates at main roads leading to residential localities and block the small lanes permanently with high walls and barbed wires.
2.
A. Issue id cards/vehicle pass to residents so that they can enjoy free movement in & out of their localities. Visitors will have to produce id [driving license, passport, pan card, company permits etc]
B. Visitors who do not have any id will be photographed and fingerprinted at the check point gates.
C. All visitors will be allowed to enter only if a resident gives consent.
3. Banks can set up ATMs inside these gated communities for safe withdrawl of cash at any time. Shoping malls and entertainment centers shouls also be allowed inside.
3. The goverment should form more liberal policies for private developers to build high security gated communities at the outside of Bangalore.
4. IT / BPO and other companies who are providing employment to high income individuals should also be encouraged to set up offices inside these gated communities.
5. Gate to Gate public transportation systems should be encouraged. For instance if a housewife living in one gated community wants to visit a relative/friend in another gated community then she can just hop into a bus protected by an armed security guard and get down inside another gated community.
6. Gateless walled communities should also be built where the criminals, cheats and corrupt goverment officials are locked up for life. There should be no gates at all and once an unwanted person is dropped inside by an helicopter he stays inside for the rest of his life. They will grow their own veggies, breed their own livestock, clean their own sh*t and do whatever they want but they cannot get out. Its also a good place for mad stray dogs to be locked up [ ofcourse if there isnt any objections from the animal lovers] Private Reply to V Ganapathy |
