I like constructing unusual sandwiches, and my latest acidental discovery is that baingan ka bharta tastes pretty good on bread.
Which are your favourite sandwich fillings?

Rajma, chilli sauce and a fried egg. If the bread is toasted, it tastes even better!

One of the stranger sandwiches I had in Dubai was a hot and greasy combo of french fries, pickles, fried eggplant slices and mushrooms . Hit the right spot too!

1) Half fried egg with runny yellow sprinkled with pepper, on a buttered toasted slice of bread.

2)A slice of soft bread with a generous amount of malai.

3) Avocado between 2 soft slices of bread.

Toasted thick slices of bread (Turkish bread is best for this) , lots of hot dry garlic chutney , tomato ketchup , piping french fries and cold grated carrots...

Wow! and I thought sandwiches couldnt get interesting enough. Now I'm getting into an experimental mood. Will post here if some of the experiments succeed. If not, please send me home remedies for upset tummy/food poisoning :P

2) With "Mango Thokku" (grated mango pickle)
3) Toasted bread dip it in Spicy hot rasam (though not a sandwich technically.. i love it)

Here's my brother's Sandwich to Eat After a Night of Heavy Partying:
-Smear pav generously with butter.
-Stuff it with a fried up mixture of eggs, onions, tomatoes, and sausage or keema.
-Drink with black coffee.

During bachelor days it was a hot samosa crushed between two slices.
Haldiram aloo bhujiya on an ample splash of tomato ketchup is good when you do lots of old monk and land back home with the kitchen closed.
When I used to sail in the submarine, a thick layer of butter, with a thicker layer of black caviar was superb. But those were good days when we used to get caviar by the pound. Its awfully expensive to buy caviar, even in russia now. In any case, there is some sort of ban on harvesting caviar from sturgeon fish.

In college, we used to make sandwiches with:

A bun and:
1. Omelette and cheese slice filling.
2. Above + mixture.
3. Egg puff/chicken/veg.
4. Said puff and cheese slice.
5. Only mixture.
6. Ketchup.
7. Variations on the same.

Pretty good too!

Interesting post!:)
One of my faves is the remains of the vegetable/dal/usal cooked the previous night with buttered bread and finely chopped onions.

The other rather safe but tasty s/w is paneer finely crumbled and with a bit of salt added- can be either eaten with green chillis chopped finely and mixed in the paneer and had as a sandwich. OR, the juice of any spicy pickle applied on one side of the bread, the other buttered and the paneer in between. The bread preferably should be brown, as that brings out the taste. One can toast the same too.

Haha. I had that Baingan Ka Bharta on bread once at Moshe's cause it sounded something exotic only to realise when someone told me just after I ordered that it's Baingan.

But that sandwich was good :)

This one was assembled in a moment of desperate hunger and lack of choice in the ingredients available but necessity is really the Mother of invention! ;)

Spread Choonda (choonda is a sweet 'n sour mango pickle) on a slice of bread and top with Alu Bhujia. Cover with another slice and devour before your conscience intervenes to remind you of the calories consumed.

Really yum!

Lapsi

A sandwich with anything crunchy in it. You can try wafers, chivda etc.

The contrast of hard and soft makes a fantastic combination :)

Leftover tandoori chicken, shredded, with sweet chhundo or any other hot-sweet pickle, tastes amazing. For fun, add a few roasted cashew nuts.
A thick-sliced loaf works better than the ordinary sliced sandwich bread.

My comfort foods!!!

1) A thick slice of Ham + with some finely chopped onions & fresh ground pepper in between buttered toasted white bread slices.

2) A triple decker sandwich.. 3 soft white breads. corriander chutney + thin sliced cucumber, tomatoes (all cold) between bread 1 & 2.. a slice of cheese + butter + potato chips between bread 2 & 3.

3) Our favourite Barbeque sandwich.. toast a bun over the grill while doing your starters (sausages - either chicken or Pork). Split the bread when both sides get toasted.. add sour cream (hung curd) add one of the sausages that is grilling... some hot sauce or ketchup to taste.. voila!!! must be had standing next to the grill!!

This one is my favorite but not so healthy :)

Thick turkish bread stuffedwith char grilled veggies ( red capsicum, mushrooms, onions, sundried tomatoes and eggplant, garlic ) very oily but fantastic served cold.

for the healthy option just stuff a lot of gajjar kachumber
in a toasted brown bread. ( grated carrots, chopped green chilli, lemon juice, salt, dessicated coconut, crushed peanuts and season with mustard seeds ) yum.

Yup Sanjay, I love roasted veggies on bread too -- especially red bell peppers. You can roast a big batch and store them in the fridge, dressed with olive oil, salt n pepper. Super delicious with scrambled eggs, in a sandwich or on pasta.

I invented one this morning for my packed lunch :)

I filled a thick turkish bread with cheese slices and found a can of corn kernels in the fridge, stuffed two spoonfull of corn in the bread and seasoned with pepper and salt.. at work put it in a sandwich griller..turned out pretty good with melted cheese and sweet corn. and I saved money on lunch so wife was happy too :)

Sanjay, your sandwich reminded me of something I had made during camp-outs at school- that of canned baked beans and sweet corn mixed together and filled as sandwich...yum! :)

There was this one time, when as architecture students, we were returning from a trip and had nearly no money left...we were about 15 of us...starving like crazy...so got together all that we had-few biscuits, pickles, ghatia and farsan, chivda, wafers...bought some boiled moong and a loaf of bread from the railway station...mixed it all (except bread) and had as sandwiches. Quite different, but nice too! :)

Ha ha Lovemarks, the kind of abuse we put our tummies through in archi-school. Our canteen man Pai made this vile bread bonda featuring chutney (main ingredient ketchup and red chillies) and crammed with potatoes. And of course, there were those Bangalore archi-students and their Iodex sandwiches...
