Vikram Karve | | MY FAVOURITE VADA PAV
By
VIKRAM KARVE
My favourite Vada Pav is CTO Vada Pav at Ashok Satam’s stall on the Flora Fountain (Hutatma Chowk) side of the Central Telegraph Office (CTO) in Mumbai.
The Vada is served freshly fried piping hot and is crisp and crunchy on the outside. That’s how a good Vada should be from the outside, nice and crisp, not soft and soggy like most of the fare dished out elsewhere.
The moment you bite the sharp zesty effect of the spices and greens hits you – there is an abundance of tangy greens in the tasty fusion inside : green chillies, coriander, curry patta, ginger-garlic. Don’t chew, just roll your tongue and press the hot stuff against your palate and let it dissolve. You’ll feel stimulated for sure! It’s not only mouth watering; it may be even nose-watering too if you have a delicate tongue. So might as well put the vada in a pav and savour the CTO Vada Pav gazing at the Hutatma Memorial, the Fountain and nice faces in the crowd rushing by to and from Churchgate.
Can anyone tell me where I can enjoy a good Vada Pav in Pune? I’ve tasted a few so far, even the famed Joshi's, Diwadkar, Rohit et al, and found them quite soggy and insipid compared to the Mumbai's CTO Vada.

Mr.Mojo Risin | | My Personal Favorite has to be the great 'Kunj Vihar Vada pav' apposite thane S.T.Stand... The place is always jam packed..since its in the vicinty of the railway as well as the S.T.stn.. The USP is the huge sized pav along with the chutney. Nice hot, huge and crisp wadas as served in between em.. We had named it as India's answer to big Mac before the McD's stepped in our country...lol.. Along with a glass of lassi it's a meal for most ppl frequenting the place.Private Reply to Mr.Mojo Risin |

Savita Govilkar | | Hi, My favourite is the one which is served on gadi just out side Apna Bazar gate at Indian Oil Junction, 4 Bungalows. The one out side N M College is also good. But I think the one at Apna Bazar is a little better. I think the ingradients in the chutney are fresh. Cheers Private Reply to Savita Govilkar |

Sanjay Rao | | I have tasted the fare at all these places....all are very good...every one has its own USP!!!
There are two places which I feel are worth a mention:
1. Vada pav opposite Chembur Post Office. 2. Sanju,s vada pav, which earlier was located at Ambedkar Garden, Chembur. Now he has relocated to N.G. Acharya Marg, Chembur (at the Subhash nagar junction).

Sanjay Lad | | I am with Ajeet here...
The one in the Kirti College lane...Ashok is the name of owner, its the best I have had so far...also his Bhajjipav is fantastic...You have to be lucky to get the Bhajjipav as it finishes as soon as the crisp hot potatopakodas are out of the frying pan.
Good idea to order about 5 so that you dont have to wait for eternity...

Dr Anirudh Badade | | I prefer nusta batata vada without any pav. And I like vadas which have a very thin batter coating wth some crispy areas. And a nice filling inside. Mumbai-Pune Expressway has superb batata wadas --- 1) while going to Pune at the food mall, and 2) while coming back to Mumbai there's Datta.Private Reply to Dr Anirudh Badade |

Sanjay Lad | | I also remember this batata wada I had at Chondhi naka near Kihim Beach...Albaugh.
It was different then usaual as he rolled the filling in a thin layer of red chutney before dipping it in the batter, that gave the wada a nice bite you could feel on your palate.
It was just wada though..no pav :)Private Reply to Sanjay Lad |

 Sean Singh (sean@vsnl.com) | | Aah, Vada Paav . . . . my favorite quaint-essential Bombay snack.
The best ones I have had are from -
1. One small non-descript joint called 'Sangam' just out of santacruz station on the east side. Fresh crispy wada and Really clean sweet smelling bread (without any black spots.)
2. A small wooden stall right outside Chembur Gymkhana in Subhash nagar, chembur. Always crowded, authentic, rustic, cheap, clean and very satisfying. That great taste.
3. That famous guy outside Mithibai college, his butter wada pavs with onions and sev is awesome.
4. A joint called either 'sadguru' or 'Saikripa' right outside Vashi Station in the food court selling Jumbo wada pavs, with a dash of onions, and a superb garlic chutney . . . great.
5. A very old and popular joint in Thane on the street that has all these famous branded garment shops, I dont know the name of the street but its got your Crocodiles, Arrows, Benettons, woodlands and all, this one is on the left side of the 1 way street and the street ends on the main station road, sorry about the address but the wada pavs are excellent, the way they should be, the real ones.
6. Chandan - used to be a favorite long back in chembur opposite Natraj cinema but I dont know whether he still exists now. His vashi branch is not half as good.
7. Of course, Datta on the Bombay Poona expressway.
8. And that cool authentic maharashtrian joint (dont remember the name) on the old Bombay Poona highway right on the turning junction of the Goa highway which has a lot of other good stuff like kothmir wada, Thalipeeth etc. His wada pavs are fantastic.
9. Ramakant on the old Bombay Poona highway still rocks because of his dominantly garlicy flavour.
And man, how I love the garlic chutney . . . I like my wada pavs dry loaded with the lahsun chutney.

Dr Anirudh Badade | | Outside the post-office meaning Chembur post-office? Yes thats very popular. He gives nice bhajis too -- the small ones (? moong). Never tried this Subhash Nagar fellow. But there's also one deep inside tilak nagar at Chembur -- anyone will guide you to him. Its remarkable that so many people have mastered the art of batata vada making -- yet all of them are different. Private Reply to Dr Anirudh Badade |

Sameer Pimpale | | i agree with ajit and sanjay about the vada pav near kirti college. thin batter, crispy and serves it with lasoon chatni. He also adds 'chura' (fried batter)to it. mmmmm awesome. You also get good vada pav inside aarey colony. Every order is freshly prepared. Vada-usal combination is just amazing.
