Nirav Sanghavi | | I finished Robert Kiyosaki's "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" and found it slightly repetitive (maybe because it was written for an American audience primarily) and now have finished 3/4ths of Cash Flow Quadrant by the same author (you can call it a good sequel).
Together I would recommend these books to whoever wants to build this attitude: "While I go out every day/week/month/year to work, and come back after earning money, my money also should be made to do the same" till my money alone earns more than my family and me spend.
Anyway, I strongly recommend the second book with the first only as a platform for it.

Savita Govilkar | | Ok Guys. 1. I read sometime ago Inheritance of Loss by Ms Desai. FOund it quite boring and could not make out what the book wanted to say. There is a message but very general. And has nothing to do with such a long boring story line. 2. Read The SHining by Stephen King. EXtremely well written Horror Novel. However at this stage I dont ger scared much. But book is quite effective as my 18 year old son is not ready to sleep alone when we travel. 3. Currently reading Afghan by Fredric Forsyth. Very good book. But I have passed the stage of enjoying fast paced complex plots in which 50 charecters are spanning acros 25 countries impersonating various personalities to achieve terrorist objectives and trying to evade multiple authorities who fail to outsmart them. 4. Sometime ago read Da Vinci Code. Quite a page turner and Edge of the Seat kind of novel. I personally give less priority to anybody's Relegious objectives.
Read many management and personality development books in my twenties. 5. Want to strongly reccomend a book which I think affected my personality is Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins. The book is quite thick. His own personal narration and experiences . It also has a step by step 7 days plan to implement the concepts in personal and professional life.
6. Tried to read Monk who sold his ferrari but gave up as I found it too basic and primary kind and all the while trying to feed dosages.(What we call in marathi'Bodhaprad and Balbodh both at the same time'.)But will pick up again and try to complete.
Will try to contribute more about my readings in this post.

Vaijayanti Asolkar Bhattacharya | | no basabda, here u r wrong. when i was in 11-12th,everyone around me was reading mills and boon. one evening my room mate gave me her copy to read and said, its so wonderful, just marvellous! so i tried to read it. read first few pages, then i coldnt get at anything, so read few pages ahead(eg.first 10 pages, then 25th to 30th), i kept it aside, then read last few pages where ultimately the woman gets her man. my room mate got annoyed and literally forced me to read it all.I somehow found it likeany predictable movie which u can watch from anywhere and know what must have happened earlier and what will happen later.I have never read another mills and boon in my lifetime so far Private Reply to Vaijayanti Asolkar Bhattacharya |

Savita Govilkar | | My experience with Mills and Boons was similar when I was in college. SOmehow managed to complete 2 books. MOst of teh M&B books have middle aged rich guy and teenage gal or middle aged rich lady and teenage/young boy. The locations are exotiqiues. Ususally blue of the sea or the sky matches their eyes. They feel the magnetism. And it takes 25 pages for him to keep hand on her shoulder... My husband says that at that rate Harold Robbins will have to write 2000 pages minimum. I found the whole stuff quite useless.. However off course it has it's own fan club..anyways.. Interesting discussions on this post... Private Reply to Savita Govilkar |

FuFaji Lalit Vashishta | | Penguin Book of Modern Indian Speeches: 1877 to the Present Edited by Rakesh Batabyal; Penguin; Rs 595 A vivid history of India:
A vivid, captivating history of India, in the words of the men and women who shaped it.
At their best, speeches highlight the concerns of the times and inspire a nation to great acts. From Surendranath Banerjea's 1878 speech addressing the issue of Indian unity to M.A. Jinnahâ's address in 1940 calling for the creation of Pakistan, from Homi Bhabha's espousal of the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in the 1960s to Rajiv Gandhi's remarkable address on disarmament in 1988, from Gopal Krishna Gokhale's first budget speech in the imperial legislative council in 1902 to Manmohan Singh's equally epoch-making one in 1992, great speeches have shaped the development of India as we know it today.
The Penguin Book of Modern Indian Speeches brings together over 150 of the most influential and important speeches in our history. Included here are classics like Dadabhai Naoroji's maiden address to the House of Commons in 1892, Bhagat Singh's soul-stirring statement in court during his trial, Jawaharlal Nehru's Tryst with Destiny, as also speeches on an eclectic range of subjects”politics, economics, science, social and religious reform” by some of the best minds of India: C.V. Raman and Jagadish Bose, Sir Syed Ahmad and Pherozeshah Mehta, Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi, P.C. Mahalanobis and Amartya Sen, among others.
Thematically arranged and skilfully introduced and contextualized, each speech proves the enduring potential of human oratory to motivate and enrich. The result is a definitive and inspirational chronicle of a nation in the making.

Charulata Bansal | | The Road by Cormac McCarthy ... a must read for all those who carry the fire within themselves and have the will to survive against all odds.
This book is about a journey of a father and son who have very few possessions and are fleeing from the ravages of the land. Its a deadly portrayal of where the world will be if we continue abusing natural resources and what survival will mean. Amidst this stark truth is the love which the father has for his son and the will to survive. It is an extremely dark book and gets frightening but at the same time its so moving that you will not put it down till you know whether the father and son survive...Private Reply to Charulata Bansal |

vinod manvi | | I am currently reading "The Black Swan"- extremely interesting perspective on improbable events. I feel it is better than Nassim's earlier book - 'Fooled by Randomness' I want to read a book that chronicles the life and times of Bajirao I. Please let me know if there is a comprehensive book, in English or Marathi.
Bye for now

Finished Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne - How to create uncontested market space =
The metaphor of red and blue oceans describes the market universe. Red oceans are all the industries in existence today—the known market space. In the red oceans, industry boundaries are defined and accepted, and the competitive rules of the game are known. Here companies try to outperform their rivals to grab a greater share of product or service demand. As the market space gets crowded, prospects for profits and growth are reduced. Products become commodities or niche, and cutthroat competition turns the red ocean bloody. Hence, the term red oceans.
Blue oceans, in contrast, denote all the industries not in existence today—the unknown market space, untainted by competition. Create an un-contested market space. In blue oceans, demand is created rather than fought over. There is ample opportunity for growth that is both profitable and rapid. In blue oceans, competition is irrelevant because the rules of the game are waiting to be set. Blue ocean is an analogy to describe the wider, deeper potential of market space that is not yet explored.

Vaijayanti Asolkar Bhattacharya | | Oh wow, this post is revived! great! I happened to read a lot of Shobha(a) De lately. Selective memories is awful and cant understand why she talks about so many ppl with so much contempt. Spouse, well, there are many such books (self-help type) which discuss relationship(s) of a married couple. I had read speedpost too.... now i dont know...perhaps a break from her books will be a great idea. Read a lot of marathi books and magazines recently. Buying more of NBT and CBT stuff for my kid. I still feel, the illustrations were better when i was a child, though the printing technology wasnt advanced so much. i wonder if my kid will read as much as i used to/ i do. Was it a blessing that TV wasnt around at all (except metros) till 1984, and life was more peaceful, so we could develop patience for reading a book?Private Reply to Vaijayanti Asolkar Bhattacharya |

Sujatha S | | Maybe, if u start discussing with her something that is found in a magazine or newspaper.. or u can start with by asking her to read a small piece and give her opinion... also encourage her to do puzzles, crossword or sudoko and slowly lead her to reading light pieces and then she herself will start shwoing interest to read more...
But in reality, the advent of television has slowly killed the reading habits of people.. especially the younger generation.... i still remember, how I would eagarly wait for my father to bring home the latest edition of 'Punthalir,' a tamil version of tinkle in late 80's. Also he was subscrbing to 'The Hindu paper' and thus reading habit caught on with me... today television, cell phone and internet have literally taken over all the teenagers' time that they are unable to read anything apart from school or college books.
By the way.. I finished 'Shantharam' few months back and is living with "My Experiments With Truth" by Gandhiji now.

Vaijayanti Asolkar Bhattacharya | | Many thanks lalit!
now abt how to make kids read: I shall share my story here:
Chi. Shubhankar has just started writing alphabets, small case. He is four. All weekdays (Mon-Sat), I really dont get to read paper at all, and if i get, its around 11 pm. But on sundays and holidays, when he finishes his morning chores, i open the newspaper and show as if i am very much engrossed in reading, and sometimes i purposely ignore him. That made him angry one day, and asked me whether paper or a book was more important to me than him. That gave me an opportunity to prompt him. I told him plain and simple that nothing is more important to me than him, if he needs my urgent attention, but at the same time he shall not understand how enjoyable and engrossing the reading is, unless he himself begins to read the books and newspapers. > >It worked so well that he independently opens the newspaper in the morning like an adult and tries to read a few words in small case(he cant read capital letters yet except like C, S, W, V X, Z etc which resemble with small case letters). He even wants to discuss some picture and its title in those rush hrs and i usually give a patient peep in the paper (which gives him a message that this is important enough, even in the rush hrs). > >I hope he develops a habit of healthy reading. > >My husband used to watch TV a lot, and so also Chi. Shubhankar. One day Joydip had a brush with cable wala, as they were not showing some of the channnels at all, which he used to watch regularly. So we disconnected! What a blessing! Now our TV is used only to watch DVDs, and it automatically controls what Chi. Shubhankar watches. Once when he was very adament, i allowed him to watch TV for 5 hrs nonstop, then locked the channel, and convinced him that TV was damaged beacuse it was made to work too much. Then he was off TV for a month, again by me telling him that TV was damaged so much that it cant be repaired immedeiately. > >After a month's begging by him, once when he returned from creche, i told him that TV was finally repaired by spending huge amounts of money in which we could by atleast 10 DVDs for him.(he has concept only upto 10).This worried him a lot (that mother would have bought 10 new DVDs for him if the TV wasnt kaputt). So he , on his own stops watching after he has seen one DVD. :)
I feel kids watch too much TV for the following reasons:
>1. Beacuse its being watched a lot at home/creche, for whatever reason. >2. Because other children discuss some shows on TV, and the kids feel that if they dont watch, they wont be able to participate in that discussion, which they feel below dignity. >3. Sometimes TV is used to keep away the kids (from bothering/disturbing adults). A very very bad practice, I feel. >4. Adults themselves seldom read, so their kids dont take to reading, ofcourse there could be exceptional kids who read a lot in spite of no such environment at home. >5.When kids read, they want to share it with others , and they dont have much patience to wait for a long time. If they notice that they are being ignored, they dont feel motivated, and slowly come out of this habit of reading. > >We can go on and on.... each kid is different, so also the set of parents. One has to find out ways and keep on trying till one gets the desired result. :)Private Reply to Vaijayanti Asolkar Bhattacharya |
Nov 07, 2008 7:18 pm | | re: re: re: re: which book you read last/reading currently? | # |
sushi krishnamoorthi | | VAijayanti..Your 5th point is very much true but other experiments, I am not very sure. In my openion, each child is unique and has to be treated in a way which suits his moods. You are a young mother that too working and may be going through what theoretical knowledge you have gained during the course of your studies, teaching and sharing with colleagues. In some ways, your experiments may have lot of positive effect on the children but always experimenting with the child is both tedious for the mother as well as the child.
Let me put my experience .. I have two sons, both brought up by me but they are not same in many ways. One is an extrovert and the other, the opposite. Even I was working and for some years they were the inmates of creche (yes the creche, they felt was like jail). TV was just then introduced and there was a craze for watching even 'yaana tumhi paahile kay' sort of programs.
But, as a family we all will sit and watch the TV before dinner ..There were some very good serials like Humlog and weekly movies which were a must for the family. More than that, sports programs like World cup, Wimbledon etc were viewed even till midnight with all of us discussing and cheering and fighting and betting as to who will win. But during exams times, the TV was open for just a small while as relaxation.
Other than the TV, me and my hubby both are voracious readers and books always occupied a place in the dining place. We used to eat sitting down and more than removing the left overs, removing all the books was difficult. We both used to discuss the books with the children listening and when they asked questions, we used to tell the story bit by bit. In that way they started showing interest in the books and then we used to take them to the nearly lending library where we used to take our books and they were just told to have a 'dekho' at the comics and like they want to imitate the elders, they also used to take some comics and that started their reading. Even today, when we are together we all discuss about the books. Those days we used to get them books and now they get books for our taste.
Now they are into reading downloaded books in their 'blackberry' which I feel is harmful to their eyes. When I made my remarks on this issue, immediate came my son's reply. 'Amma, then you should buy me a 'E' Reader'..I am looking for one or rather two for both my sons. Can anyone suggest which brand is better? I saw the details of Sony brand and don't know whether it is better or not?
PS: Telling stories when they are very young klndles their interest in the books. My story to my sons, nieces, grand daughters always has 'Nikitha' has the main character. She is some times naughty, sometimes very obedient, sometimes won't study, sometimes comes first in the class, all depending on who is listening to my story.

sushi krishnamoorthi | | Finally, Lalit, never make a rule supposed to be followed by the children. 'They would always like to break the same. If the normal routine is to watch TV till 10 pm and then sleep, one day if the child wants to watch a movie which may run upto 1 am, allow her, telling her that, that is this month's gift for you.
In my openion, TV as a medium has both postive and negative effects on the children. By banning TV when a teenage girl is at home, you will only make her more grumpy and wanting to go and see the program in her friend's house.
For Vaijayanti, her child is very small so it is ok with NO TV. Private Reply to sushi krishnamoorthi |

Vaijayanthi, I really adore your way of thinking and caring about your son. we all did that but not this seriously, I suppose. Moreover, Me and my husband really shared bringing up of children to cooking and washing of vessels. Most of the time we could not get even top servant to come in our time, so all work, we only. Even when I had my carrom or table tennis matches after office hours, my hubby would reach home early and when he had his matches, I used to. One secret of success in bringing up children is to first train the husband. (my husband never comes near Ryze, so I can write this). Private Reply to sushi krishnamoorthi |

sushi krishnamoorthi | | Just a change in the name of the author would have been more apt for the title.
Soeb..If we both had matches to play at the same time, who has to play will be decided after weighing the winning possibilities. Normally, hubby will elect to take care of the kids as competition was quite low in the women's category and hence winning chances more. Moreover, children also loved their daddy staying back with them, obviously as they can play with him instead of studying.
Yes Soeb ..good idea of having a picnic for the children with the parents for imbibing the reading habits in them. But my one genuine doubt is, who is going to be trained and tricked, parents or the children?Private Reply to sushi krishnamoorthi |

RVIyengar | | I’m halfway through the book “A Million Little Pieces” by James Frey.
It is a searing and riveting first-person narration of a 23-year-old drug abuser’s struggles at the rehabilitation center and that of others through his eyes.
What made me buy this book was the controversy surrounding the author’s claim that it was his real-life story.
When the book was published, it got rave reviews and was a choice of Oprah’s Book Club, and Frey himself made an appearance on Oprah’s talk-show.
However, The Smoking Gun, a website, nailed Frey’s lie (in a write-up aptly titled “A Million Little Lies”) and proved that Frey had fabricated many details in the story, and hence might not have come across in his real life all that he had detailed in the book.
After initial denials, Frey admitted that he had altered the details here and there.
Oprah called him to appear on her show again and confess the truth, which he did amidst hems and haws, and apologized to his readers.
The publishers, it was said, offered to refund the money to the buyers if they felt cheated by Frey’s claim that the book was autobiographical.
Controversy apart, it cannot be denied that the book “A Million Little Pieces” is intense as well as eminently readable.
The language is sharp, crisp and in-your-face.
Would happily recommend this one to anyone.

Kedar Bedekar | | Having heard so much about THE ALCHEMIST by Paulo Cohelo, I finally bought the book.
But with due respect to the Author and all those who have raved and ranted about the book, I am struggling.
I also seriously introspected these last few days to see whether I had any shortcomings and why I wasn't able to buy into this con job like the rest of the world has. As you all must have guessed I gave myself a clean bill of (mental) health:)
It's an uphill task which is getting more difficult with every passing page to make any sense of this book (I confess to having read books by Rajneesh, Deepak CHopra, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Robin Sharma ect.) basically in the same genre and havent felt that I am reading a highly over rated piece of work when I read these guys.
I kept on trying but after 125 pages I can take no more. I may find myself eating Chana packed in a paper which was a once a part of this over rated comedy (or tragedy) called the Alchemist!
The point is, has any one of you felt so cheated by something which the rest of the world has raved and ranted about?

Anirudh Pathak | | I'm reading "working with you is killing me" by Katherine Crowley, Kathi Elster.
The most practical book i have read on dealing with workplace relationships.

Vaijayanti Asolkar Bhattacharya | | some marathi books recently. "naaticharami" by Meghana Pethe. Its a painful reading probably for ppl (esp women) in volatile, unsettled relationships. another one 'kunastava kunitari' by yashoda padgaonkar, wife of Marathi poet Mangesh Padgaonkar. And Superb ones by Mahesh Elkunchwar -all of his work! Private Reply to Vaijayanti Asolkar Bhattacharya |
